Jay and Silent Bob straight back. No, we covered that last week. This week we are going to talk about a film by Broken Lizard. Of course, I'm talking about super Troopers, and I kind of want to keep this a little more upbeat and moving fast. Just let's just have some fun because it's a great film, and we'll get started, you know, let's you know, you guys got any questions, No, sir.

So as I said in the cold opened h we we talked about Jay and Signic Bob strike back last week, and you know, actually got a pretty popular response that that one kind of blew up on us in a good way. Uh got a message here I wanted to share with you guys. Actually got two messages.

Loved how he had quietly built a cinematic universe, and strike back was the payoff that is coming from one of our favorites, David Wright. This was, in fact the first Kevin Smith film I had ever seen, and up to today have only seen this and Clerks Duology films, not seeing Maul Rats or Dogma. Still I don't remember having any issues following this. I probably just went with it, which I tend to do. An excellent film. Loved hearing your thoughts about it. That is from Jason Coslet, who he's kind of if you're kind of wondering, like what do you mean? Like this was his first one. We were kind of talking on the Jane Sun Bob episode like could you just walk into the Kevin Smith the viewis universe? If Janecea on a Bob strike back as your first movie, are you completely lost? Are you gonna be missing out on a lot of the jokes, to which we are all kind of like, yeah, I don't think it works because, you know, as we talked about last week, Kevin Smith kind of explained to the studios, don't worry, don't need to watch the first four movies. This one's kind of self contained and it's fine. Whether or not that's true, I don't know, but Jason Coslet doesn't seem to think so. This was you know, this was his first. Yeah yeah, he's. One of several members of Broken Lizard. So I'll tell you what. We are discussing the two thousand and one cop comedy super Troopers movie opens. The title is right there, a film by Broken Lizard. So if a lot of you are like, who is Broken Lizard, we're talking about a group composed of Jay Chander, Sakar who plays Thorny, he's Rama Thorne. You got Kevin Hefferman, who we all know and love as Officer Rod Farva, Steve Lemmy, I think it's I think it's Lemmy, Steve Lemmy le May thank you, Garrett.

He's playing Mac, you know, he's oh he's angry. Uh you got you got Angela's crush. Paul Soder uh playing uh playing Foster. And then lastly, uh, the rookie. Uh that's Eric Stolhanski, so Rabbit Rabbit. Yeah. So these guys uh basically broken Lizard. This all happens back in nineteen eighty nine at Colgate College. A friend of Jay's, trying to raise some money, says, hey, can you put on a comedy show? Uh, you know, kind of pull pull something together. And he's like, sure, sure, I can do that.

11:43 And what they do is, uh he calls up his his fraternity buddies, bitathnic Pie, and that's where all these guys are are hanging out. They're all meeting, they're all friends, fraternity brothers as it were. They have a lot of fun with this. They create a a sketch show called Charred Goosebeak and I don't know where, I don't know where. Uh he's getting these names for these these teams. But yeah, they they begin their career as Charred Goosebeak at Colgate College. It's something they kind of left behind there. Apparently to this day, Colgate College still has like a sketch comedy troupe called Chard Goosebeak. So, uh, any of you interview students at Colgate University listening, if you're out there, let us know, like, you know, what's what's going on with Chard Goosebeak these days? We'd love to find out they all graduate. A couple years later, they they they find each other again in New York. They're touring, they're doing the New York clubs, the comedy circuit as a team called Broken Lizard. And this is something I don't think we've seen before, you know, in the in the early nineties.

12:53 I mean stand up stand up comedians. You know, they're they're everywhere, right, but how many are how many are showing up as a team. You know, they're doing like a sketch comedy thing in the stand up world, and it's working. It is absolutely working. So a little funny fun fact for you. People have always wondered, like what does broken Lizard mean? And I'll tell you right now. I can't begin to tell you what charred goosebeak means. But Tranders the Car has kind of had this this Heath Ledger joker thing over the couple of decades where he's got a different story every time you bring it up. Yeah, it's kind of cool. So looking this up. Depending on who you are and where you were, Broken Lizard might mean a euphemism for loss of arility, or it might be alluding to Chandersacar's allergies. But ultimately he did recently admit that it's just a name he made up off the top of his head when he was about to create the flyer for the show. For their first show, and if you're wondering how weird does it get, Broken Lizard beat out the other name that they were workshopping, which was Chocolate Speedo.

14:18 I'm happy they went with. I think think Broken Lizard was the way to go. Absolutely, So let's talk. Here's the thing about Broken Lizard, and this is kind of an opinion, you know, I just want to get your guys' thoughts on this because I want to know, like, what makes this this this team kind of stand out because we've had some amazing sketch comedy troops over the years, like think about Monty, Python, the Kids in the Hall, Second City, the Groundlings, Upright, Citizens, Brigade, the State. Each one of these they all have something in common. They've got incredible talent that goes on to become, you know, in some cases, huge movie stars, huge comedic talents.

15:05 Do you guys feel broken Lizard is in? I mean, can they run with that pack of names I just gave. You, I mean, I think they can. A couple other kind of great troops were also the guys from Workaholics. They started as like a sketch comedy, and then of course the dudes from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. I mean, but no, I think you're I think you're right. I think they could go ahead and run alongside them. I mean, their comedy is amazing, and their storytellings actually pretty solid as far as that goes as well. Yeah, I mean it's they come up with some hilarious stuff. Like I don't know about you guys, but even to this day, like the other night when I was watching this, there was I was pretty much cry laughing because I was laughing so hard in certain scenes. And then there's just some some really dumb stuff. Yeah, and I kind of feel like we're you know, Gary, we just saw the third movie. I feel like each movie has one moment where you're like, Okay, now we've just gone too far, you know, exactly if this was Spaceballs, we've gone to plaid.

So well, you're right, and Garrett, I'm glad you brought up the guys some Workaholics and obviously the guys from It's Always Sunny because again, incredible talent in both cases that that and you know, both had you know, people that went on to you know, other shows, movies and what have you. Angela, I know I'm going to assume from our conversation last night you've seen a lot of the Broken Lizard films. Yeah, what I mean? I mean these guys, like, what's the what's the secret to their staying power? Do you think? I think they just know how to just have fun and if you had like no filter and like if you could just really just they say, man, I wish I could if I was out, this is exactly.

16:57 What I would say. And then they just do it, you know, and it's just their their banter, you know it. They're it's not like they're trying to recreate the wheel. It's not like they're trying to make some huge, you know, intellectual statement. It's it's just fun shenanigans and just letting loose and just letting go. I know we've said that word how many times? Now? You got the clock, I got a counter here. You're racketing. You guys are racking it up quick. Someone's getting pistol whipped before the hour. Yes, you mean, hey, what's the place with the goofer shitt all the walls.

The banter and just uh, even if it's awkward, even if it's you know, like you said, a little bit too far, I think they just they can make it work, you know, with that and just the. Ridiculousness like the super Troopers. We all want to be able to goof off like that, and some jobs you can't. Yeah, yeah you can't. I can't exactly do that in my field. But but you try to find the fun where you can, you know, try to put the fun and funny. And I just you know, I think, yeah, they just have a really good chemistry and just know how to just just poke poke fun and and just like I said that the whole no filter, which I love.

18:26 Speaking speaking of poke fun, Angela, I'm going to tell you right now there is a scene in Super Troopers three involving a specific animal. What, oh goodness, I can't wait. Not only is Angela an animal lover and a Paul so odter lover, she's she she spends her days taking care of sick animals. So yeah, there's there's a pretty sick one. There is. Can you at least narrow it down? Are we talking like mammal, bird, reptile. It's a mammal.

Okay, so this movie, you know, let's let's think of let's go back to two thousand and one because I'm gonna I'm gonna hazard a guess that you guys did not see this in the theater? Right? Was this rental for you guys? I I think it was. God. I kind of know where I was at when this came out, But yeah, this had been a yes because I was working part time at a video store. Actually, yeah, you know, back in the day, So yes, and that came out. I was like, oh, you know, and I was laughing so hard. I mean I was cry laughing at Definitely a couple of specific parts, which I know we'll probably talk a little bit later about, like our favorite.

20:05 Scenes and stuff. But yes, I'm like this, it's just yeah, I love the ridiculousness. It was just a huge hoot with that. So yeah. But definitely DVD, which I think they didn't really do too well in the theater if I remember it. Really they got most of their sales and everything from the vhs. Oh my god. Yeah, this that this is not loved. This is not loved by critics, you know, so critics are having fun with it, did not get a good critical response, did not make a lot of money at the box office. Are the guys who were probably denied from frats and never had a day of fun.

Overnight, it becomes a cult classic because it is wildly popular on college campuses with you know, you know, I'm not gonna say Stoner's you know, but you know they're loving it, you know, I everyone's love it. I wasn't, you know, you know. I have to believe though, two thousand and one, there's there's a there's a college campus Uffre. Maybe not two thousand and one, maybe maybe a little later. But but Garret, you're probably on a college campus somewhere watching this with your buddies. Closed college campus then, but yeah, I mean yeah, some years later absolutely, But how much I came to I did see this on uh DVD rented from Family Video.

Yeah, my uncle that's a few years older than us, was watching us for the weekend because we'd always got there play video games and whatnot. So him being in college at the point in time, he would go and rent these like horror movies and stuff like that. So we we were definitely way too young watch super I think so. But yeah it was great. It's great. What are they doing it at bear uncle? Exactly? Yeah, Garrett's going back home. What's a mustache? Oh my god?

22:17 Yeah, probably one. Yeah. I think you have the year given. I think that puts me at probably ten years old at this point. This is idea for you everybody. Yeah, your eyes. Are just like, yeah, you guys, you've got you've got drugs. You got you got stoner jokes, you got bobs. I can't wait to be a cop. I want to be a super right, right, you kind of were like, you know what, maybe being an adult is not so bad. You can still have to and do all this crazy stuff. Who wouldn't want to mess around with you?

And we're going to talk about that right after this break we are back. We're talking about super Troopers. Where do you get a crazy idea like this? Well, it just so happens that, you know, they're they're touring, right, they're doing they're they're hitting the club scenes or they're doing the comedy thing in New York, and they're taking a lot of road trips. And according to Steve le May, thank you, Garrett uh. According to Steve LeMay, many times they were under the influence of one or more things, and they used to be a little paranoid, these guys being full method?

23:50 Are you kidding me? But on more than one occasion they get pulled over by state highway patrol and they never get it rested, but they are paranoid each time. And Steve LeMay poses the the idea, what if those cops know that we're we're messed up and they just wanted to mess with us. What if they weren't so by the book? What if they they could really fuck with us if they chose to, and we would not know what to do right? And this scene, you know, this idea begets the littering end.

24:33 It's amazing. Okay, I don't I'm not. I'm not gonna call this a hot take, but it's a take. And maybe you know, someone can fact check me. You can look at all the comedies of two thousand and one, No, you can look at all the movies of two thousand and one. I watch you know, I watched this recently. It's like a solid ten minutes seventeen seconds. I think the opening of this movie. I'm telling you right now, this is the best opening ten minutes of any movie in the year two thousand and one. And I challenge anybody to say otherwise, Because Angela, I I heard your text message go off, and I literally I had to pull myself off the floor. I was just I was laughing so hard because it holds up. This is the great thing about this movie. You can't stop laughing. And it's it's not even like the the the jokes so much as it's the dead pin delivery of of Chandras the car mm hmm. You know, the first time, it's it's funny, right, yeah.

But but the second time, he's got the he's got the he's got the mag light. Yeah, yeah, how fast you're going? Sixty five? Sixty three? That's right. He's like, so I'm gonna do that one hundred thirty buck buck that's not cool, man. I think in real life that kid's dead. Like, there's no way a few dime bags and a bag of mushrooms.

Let's just let's just jump into like, you know, we we've talked about that scene, the littering ants scene. I think what makes this movie so highly rewatchable and such a huge cult classic. Everyone knows it because not only is it hilarious, but is this maybe one of the most quotable movies of the last twenty five years. It's super super quotable. Right, and it's it's it's quotes where you you can just it doesn't matter what the situation is. The quote can be formed to wherever you're at and whatever you're doing.

I think absolutely. The thing is he just went with it. Yeah, that that whole scene was so funny. Yeah, he when he's doing the whole flashing and acting like he's the old lady calling oh my god, yeah, I just saw this so funny and then she comes out with a shotgun that and hey, you know he still kind of stuck around.

Well, yeah, it's I mean, there are crazier, well creepier ways you could go about, because he was always trying to have an opening line with her and trying to find a way without. Being gross, you know. And that was funny and and humorous and and uh, you know, so again I think that's you know, Foster had that that that good appeal with Foster. Out of all of them, Foster gives me a lot of uh carry mahoney vibes. Steve Guttenberg from Place Academy, Oh yeah, he's the mahoney of the group, I think. And while I wouldn't have picked any of them to be like the heart throb, Angela has has pinpointed that Foster is our heart. But I mean, Angela, it's is it is it his jack tripper goofiness where he's he's not coming off.

Like just a mustache fan, so I think if he had a muscle, I would be like, no, then we have to go with Rabbit maybe, but yeah, I it needs to be like you both of you gentlemen have a lovely groomed beard bravo. But yes, I prefer that kind of the just I don't know, there's just something that I must I've never it's always creeped me out ever since I was kid. I don't know if there's some hidden memory that I have forgotten. But I just don't like just the mustache. So while Mac is fun, he would be kind of the one like, Okay, well we'll have a few drinks but yo way. But so so, Angela, you're you're you're having fun, Angela, You're having fun with Mac, but you're taking It's like if you.

He's like, well, coffee, coffee, and it's just something so simple to where he's like cream and one crep dude. For some reason, that gets me every time. And it's not one of the most quotable things, but it just absolutely gets me every time. I did. I don't know why, but I love that scene. That no, no, no, that's that's the stupid rookies, and it. Says, give me the bar soap.

31:45 Give I think it was. Do you know Brian Cox was actually pissed in that moment when he he gave that line here and here's why. The bar soap obviously is not a real bar soap. It was white chocolate, but they failed to remember that Brian Cox is diabetic. As soon as he realized he's doing a couple of takes with you know, and his bloodsher spice, it's a little immediately they're calling the props and craft here with the soap. We need that sugar free chocolate. Yeah please yeah.

32:34 Speaking of Brian Cox, Speaking of Brian Cox, can you imagine anyone if I if I told you Brian Cox passed on this or wasn't available, he is doing another movie. Who do you see doing this this role of a of a of the chief, Ohagen, anyone come to mind? Angela. I'm putting you guys on the spot here, But anyone fit that role of the grizzled chief who is kind of a father figure, but also you know, because he by the end of this movie, he is one of the boys. He's getting drunk and pissing on on cars and having a good time. Maybe say it Donalds was still right. Yeah, let's say maybe Bynolds.

No, obviously, Bill Murray did not answer him, and they went straight to Brian Cox and I gotta be honest. I Brian Cox not known for his comedic chops. Right. We love him in the Born movie, we love him in Brave Heart. He's he's just lost his good night. Yeah, I lock his good night. Good good pool there Angelo. He's an amazing dramatic actor. So to see him cut loose in a police Academy esque film, especially at the end when he's Brian Cox, Yes, the way he plays drunk, I'm watching it, is he really drunk? Well, the look, the look on his face when when he like when they pulled the guy over and he just he starts pissing on the guy's car and he's like when you gotta go. It's like when you take someone's joke and you know it's a joke and you do it anyways just to show them that they're the ones that look stupid for trying to pull the joke. I love that moment for Kevin heffer It's it's if I was gonna do like a you know, scene on a based on performance, I'd probably give it to Kevin Heffernan just for that moment where he's like, it's delicious because like he's he's proud, he's not backing down, he's not embarrassed, and he's not ashamed and he's not He's just like, yeah, yeah he should be all highway. Do they do anything else other than Supertroopers? What is the one Broken Lizard film that you would recommend? And then they yeah, Paul Soder, you know who my foster is in there, and he plays like the crazy Gordon Ramsay want to be times.

Just much like the Simon Salmon it's and what you're a fan of these guys. You don't know about these films, and both of them are just so fantastic, Like I love them. It's it's fan I should have known. I should have had that one picked for you, because you know, like me, you are films. It's just it's a it's a send up of slasher films and it's got it's got Bill Paxton in it. It does a dreadlocked Bill Paxton. How do you how do you you know not fall in love with that?

There are so many amazing actors and actresses that have chosen to work for practically nothing or in some cases probably nothing, just to work with these guys and have a good time.
