0:00 Gene Hackman played memorable bad guys, memorable good guys, and everything in between. Whether he was a detective, a senator, a reverend, or a humorous blind man, he had our attention because we knew we were watching a memorable performance. Join us as we discuss our top ten favorite film roles of legendary actor Gene Hackman. Hello, and welcome back.
0:56 I'm Jeff Johnson, I'm Amber Lewis, and this is a film by Podcast Amber. This wasn't a planned episode, but we had several emails as well as a phone call from our good buddy Jason Colvin, requesting some kind of Gene Hackman episode. This came together very fast, and honestly, I'm very happy we're here today to talk about Gene Hackman. Yeah. I think we all kind of collectively have the same idea at the same time, like we have to honor this guy. Yeah. Well, Hey, I have to commend your bravery because you are truly working live without a net this morning because you know the subject, but I didn't give you an outline. I didn't prep you on the format, so I know you're hearing this for the first.
1:46 Time, diving in like an upside down, Cruie. Well, I know you're you're hearing this for the first time. I know our listeners are, so let me share with you how this is going to go. So I reached out to our team here at a Film Buy, as well as several hosts in the entertainment podcast world and one of our listeners who happens to be a big fan of Geene Hackman, and I asked all of them to give me their top ten Gene Hackman performances and they did not disappoint Amber. Your list is fantastic, by the way. Oh thank you. It was kind of torturous to it, was it. It hard to make, it was hard to put in order.
2:27 Yeah, Now, I mean this was merely days we're talking, so anyone that was in, anyone that was going to be wanting to participate, I only gave you a handful of days. And what amazed me was some people gave me a list like within five minutes, and some people gave me a list at the zero hour, like the last possible second. And on average, the lists I received shared seven and a half out of ten picks. So we're all, whether you went fast or slow, we all collectively almost came up with the same list. I think that's amazing. That's awesome. Well, starting with the tenth pick and working our way up, I'm going to give you Amber a few hints about the role that we're discussing and give you the opportunity to guess what it is. Is that fair?
3:17 Okay? Yes? Right? And look, I know you're a little bit you're in the hot seat here, but let me build your confidence by letting you know that nine of your ten picks made this list. Wow, kind of why you got the assignment. I think I know the one that didn't make it, I'll tell you that. Okay. By the way, I asked our phasers set the Stun crew why I didn't get lists from him. They reminded me that Gene Hackman had never done any Star Trek roles. I think that's the only thing. Yeah, I did ask him if he had done so, would he have been a member of Starfleet, like an Allied alien life form or the villain? They all agreed he would have been an excellent captain.
4:04 Oh yes, you know. I mean you're a Star Trek fan. Think about how easily you could take a movie like Crimson Tide and make it a start. Thinking that right when you said he could be a good captain, I was like, you know what you take Crimson Tide, you put it in space. Yeah. Like, Hackman is the captain who takes his ship into the neutral zone to fire photon torpedoes at the Romulans, but the communication is garbled, so his science officer, Denzel Washington, takes control of the ship to investigate and find out if they're actually at war with the Romulin Empire. I mean that totally works. Yep, yep, see, I know, I know Star Trek like se know. I mean, I know you're gonna be on Phaser set to Stun later this month, Yes, with a special episode. I'm just saying, like, I'm here, guys, pick me one. I went on, you know, I little something about Gene Hackman. While attending class at the Pasadena Playhouse, Jean and his fellow classmate who would eventually become his roommate, were voted least likely to succeed. Think about that for a second.
5:12 I can't even. Least likely to succeed and he got kicked out after like three months. Amber, Can you give me the name of his classmate? Dustin Hoffman? You are correctmates. Yeah, they yeah, there's a there's a great Gene shared a great story where you know, he gets kicked out Dustin Hoffman stays on and after he graduates, he shows up in New York to Gene Hackman's apartment, you know, needed a place to crash for a few days. He's sleeping on the kitchen floor and Jean said, at one point he just didn't leave. You know, he's he's basically becoming what about Bob? And the Hackman had to take him apartment hunting just to get rid of him after a prologueda you know. And incidentally they both got their big breaks in nineteen sixty seven, Hackman with Bonnie and Clyde and Hoffman with a graduate. But it amazes me that the first time they were on screen together wasn't until two thousand and threes Runaway.
6:14 Jerry, Right, Like, that's a long time for nothing to come up. Yeah, and they're so good in that film. I don't know, have you seen have you seen Runaway? Jerry? I saw it when it first came out because I, like everybody else, I was a huge John Grisham fan, and there for a while it was like read the book watch the movie, but I don't remember. It very well at all. I need That's one I need to add to my rewatch list. I think we're all rewatching Gene Hackman like frantically because all of a sudden they're available on Prime like for free. One of the great John Grisham adaptations. But definitely definitely put that on your list. Amber quick quote from Gene Hackman.
6:58 He once said, I suppose I wanted to be an actor from the time I was about ten, maybe even younger than that. Recollections of early movies that I had seen and actors that I admired, like James Cagney, Errol Flynn, those type of romantic action guys. When I saw those actors, I felt I could do that. But I was in New York for about eight years before I had a job. I sold ladies shoes, polished leather furniture, drove a truck. I think that if you have it in you and you want it bad enough, you can do it. So any struggling actor out there that's made the big break yet, just there's mister Hackman.
7:40 Yeah. For you, just keep plugging away, you. Know, you'd like to imagine all the amazing movie memorabilia that a star like him would have in their home. Gene once said, the only movie mementeau you'd find in his home is an Errol Flynn poster from the Adventures of Robin Hood. Oh wow, all. Right, Amber, if you're ready, I say, let's get to the top ten. Oh boy, okay, all right, our first one coming in at number ten. And uh, Amber, you're the voice of reason, but I would reason with you. If you know the answer, don't jump on it, just immediately and get Let's give the listeners a chance to play along too. Okay, is that fair? Yeah? You know me too well, all right, so this first rule, let's let's let's call this familiar faces. Hackman was happy to see r Lee Ermei on set because they both served in the United States Marine Corps, and this film was the first of three films that Gene would appear in with actor Tobin Bell, who became famous for playing Jigsaw in the Sault franchise. All Right, you're wrinkling your brow.
8:50 You're okay, all right? I know, all right, get here clue number two. During the nineteen eighty nine Oscars, Hackman's saw a brief violent clip of his performance, which led him to the decision to no longer accept violent roles. So this decision ember meant he said no to Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs, and although he did say no initially to Unforgiven, Clint talked him into the role of a little Bill daggett any any any any ideas you feeling it yet? Yeah?
9:31 No, I think I know. Okay, you want to take take a guess who we talk about? Well, just given like the time, although I can't believe this would be number ten, is that Anderson in Mississippi Burning? You are corrected as Agent Anderson in Mississippi Burning. Okay, that was my number one on my list. You get this straight shit, kicker. Don't you go mistaken me for some whole other money. You've got to hear the brains in your dick. If you think we're just gonna fade away, We're gonna be here until this thing's finished. How about you, dippity? Is it gun just for show? You get to shoot people?
10:11 Just a fantastic film too. Yeah, that was the first one that I watched when I started rewatching. Was Yeah, absolutely my favorite. I'll tell you him walking into that that that bar, you know where he kind of kind of has to turn up the heat on Brad Duraff and a couple of the other locals. Oh, this is such a great movie. It's one of those ones, though, I kind of feel like it flies another radar, like when you're talking Gene Hackman. It's not the first one. It's not the first two or three, you know, And I'm with you, you know it should have been the number tenth pick overall. Maybe maybe not, but we got we got nine more to talk about, if you're ready, all right, number nine. While on location in the Caribbean for this film, he learned how to scuba dive. Yeah, oh you already know it is, all right. Well, I'll give you I'll give you one more.
11:12 This was the first of three films he did that were adapted by John Grisham novels. I feel like this one was too easy for you. But who are we talking about? Avery Tolar in the firm? I'm sorry, can I help you? Actually, I think I'm here to help you. I'm every Tollar. You're a designated mentor. Let's go to lunch, lunch, but it's not. Not even noon. I know it'll be a working lunch. What about you that you law school. So far back, I don't think I can remember. Sure he can't counselor. He used to caddy for young lawyers off from work on weekdays and their wives.
11:54 I look at those long tan legs and just knew. I had to be a lawyer. The wives had long ten legs too. And such an understated role, but I absolutely love him in this movie. Here's the thing about Avery Toller. He he's not necessarily he's not necessarily a bad guy, but he's definitely not a good guy. He's he is walking the line right between the two of them, right yep. And the way he also plays, you know, sad and like kind of carrying the burden of his life choices. Yeah, he's I love how slick he is. When we first are introduced to him, you know, Tom Cruz is sitting there, he's trying to study for the bar, and he's like, yeah, let's take an early lunch, and hey, you know we're we don't drink on the job. So Tom Cruise is like, I'll have an iced tea and then he orders something. He's like, hey, I can have.
12:54 A little little rebellion I've earned it. I've earned it. You have it. Yeah, he's so good. I love I love him, and you know, I'd love to talk more John Grisham with you, but I don't want to spoil what could or could not be on this list. We may be, we may we may be. You know. All right, Let's move on to number eight. Hackman, who was once on President Richard Nixon's enemies list in the nineteen seventies, reference to Nixon in this film by giving Nixon's famous peace sign. Is that is that a knowing laugher? Well?
13:34 I think I know it is. But okay, all right, let me give you let me give you another another clue here. This is the second time the director of this film worked with Hackman on a motion picture, and before doing so, he did work with Hackman on Broadway and also cast him and later fired him in a film that said director won the Best Director Oscar. For Oh Well, now I know it is? Oh, Oh okay, you're you're you're doing good so far? You haven't missed? You want to you want to take a shot? Uh, Papaye Doyle in the French Connection. No, I'm sorry that is incorrect. No, not the French connection.
14:16 It is thecon and he was crazy and fired everybody. So I figured I gotta be that one. I'm talking about the character who claimed no one will dance with me. I don't think it's this dress. I told him white would make me look fat? What that means no one will dance with me? I think it's this stress told him white would make me look fat. Senator Kevin Keey from. The Birdcake in the Birdcage. I gotta be honest. I had never seen this film. What did you think? I absolutely loved it. And and here's the thing, I'll be fair and say that I really wasn't all too into, you know, because I know I've seen Robin Williams go to eleven and other roles, and I just was, I don't know if this is gonna be for me. But then these lists are pouring in and it's making everyone's list, and in some cases it's the number one choice for some people. And I was like, wait, this is your number one pick from someone. I'm like, this can't be your number one pick. But it was, so I told myself, I was like, I got I gotta watch this film.
15:29 I can't I can't do this episode without knowing what what this movie's about at first. Off, I love the fact lost we're based in Ohio. He's playing an Ohio senator. I got such a kick out of that. Yeah, you know, but such amazing performances from everybody. Even I'm watching, I'm like, wait, is that that's Callista Lockhart? Yes? How but what you know? I mean, Hank's area is blowing my mind with Oh yeah, yeah, I mean and Lane, They're they're all Dian Weist, I mean, everyone is so incredible in this movie. And I thought I thought Gene Hackman's performances Senator Keeley was just perfect. He really was.
16:10 Yeah, well it's hard to be, you know, the straight man when all this insanity is going on around you, but he does it so well. Yeah. The comedy for me is how he is clearly. It's like it's like he's got a thing for for Nathan Lane, not knowing that Nathan Lane's a man, you know, He's he's very defensive of of of the mom character, and. Dian West is like, this is a man. A man, Yeah, like that wig is off and he's like, yeah, I don't understand. This is a man.
16:51 Fantastic film. Amber We are already to a third of this list, so let's take a quick break and when we come back more Gene Hackman. Welcome back. We are doing our top ten favorite performances by Gene Hackman Amber. So far, we've had an FBI agent, a lawyer, and a senator. Let's talk about a few roles he didn't take, and I'm talking about the chief of police, a troubled family man in search of aliens, and a famous archaeologist. Would it surprise you to find out that he turned down the lead roles in Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Raiders of the Lost Arc.
17:42 I mean I could see him in Jaws, but not the other. Two, So okay, so he turned down Jaws for another role. And you gotta keep in mind he did star in five movies in nineteen seventy five, so it's hard to say which one, but I'm a betting man. I'm gonna bet it was Lucky Lady. That yeah, he did with Burt Reynolds, a very young Burt Reynolds. And you got to keep in mind he was paid one and a half million dollars, which was obscene at that time. That's too much money. And you know, and Hackman has stated on more than one occasion that that the paycheck and the script are the first two things he considers from taking a role. So fair, you know, unknown director, young director wanted to take you out to see for a long time on the water, on the water or one point five million to work with a young TV star named Burt Reynolds. I don't know.
18:39 I mean, all of acting's kind of a gamble. So I agree with you. He would have been an awesome Chief Brody, though, I think yes, which is ironic because Roy Scheider gets it, you know, and I know that was they were kind of interchangeable for a brief period in the seventies, where like they were up for the same one, Like I know, I know Hackman was going to do Sorcerer, but then didn't you know he bailed out of that one, and then Roy Schreider gets it, so Close Encounters are the third kind he did. At this point, I'm like, wait, he turned down three Spielberg roles, like does he have a problem with Steven or But it turns out, unfortunately for him, he was in a troubled marriage at the time Close Encounters was about to shoot and he just didn't want to be away from home for sixteen weeks. You know, So hats off, the hats off the Gene. You know, he's he's looking at family first. I appreciate that, you know, I think that was the was the right thing for him. And plus, Richard Dreyfus is so good in that film. Yes, I mean you have to wonder what would Gene carve mashed potatoes as good as Richard Dreyfus.
19:47 I think it's a different, darker movie with Gene Hackman. Right, I think I think Hackman maybe he's a little more menacing in those family scenes just having a breakdown. Yeah, I think I think you're right. Lastly, he turned down the role of Indiana Jones because he felt the character ever heard this, Oh listen, this is good stuff. He turned it down because he felt the character was too similar to other roles he had already played, and he was fearing he would be typecast as a tough guy action star. He also allegedly had concerns about the screenplay in its initial stage. So you know, I mean you get the first the rough draft, the first copy of the script, and so you know it's gonna change a couple of times, so you gotta wonder, but I I just.
20:39 Can't Ford had like a step up because he'd already done Star Wars, so he kind of knew like he did. But as you go, yeah, but you got to remember they didn't want him for Indiana Jones because they already had him in American's Rafeeding and they had him in uh, Star Wars. But I just I mean, I just can't see Gene. Coms like I could say, like, I can't see. Yeah, yeah, Jean, Gene's not cracktable whip. I don't think you know. He did play a pilot several times in his career and he loved flying planes. Ah, I love he was on He did an appearance on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and they were talking about because Carson famously was a was a pilot. You know a lot of these celebrities they love to pilot their own little little planes. Carson asked him about the studio is being concerned with him about flying planes and doing aerobatics, and I love this. Listen to this.
21:38 Yeah, doing stunts has not come new to you. I did not realize before that you were you did aerobatics as a pilot. Yeah, I fly a little and interested in aerobatics, more precision flying and really stunt flying. But there's a what does. The studio feel about How do they feel about you? Guy? I don't think they like it if they know about it, and I suppose at this point they will know about it now because a lot of the studios are not like their stars to go out in motorcycle. Right. I guess in the old days, when you're under contract to the studio, yeah, they had more control of you. But I you know, if you can't do something that kind of turns you on in your life, you might as well wrap it up. If you can't do something that turns you on in your life, you may as well wrap it up. Well, onto wrapping up. We're getting halfway there, Amber, Let's talk about seven through five. All right, Let's see if you can keep your perfect Oh wait, you're they missed one.
22:34 You missed one, so h that's right. Okay, So let's see if you can redeem yourself here. This was gonna be a tough one for you, Okay. After the failure of this film and nineteen seventy three Scarecrow, he went through a period of depression, which ultimately changed the way he looked at the films He was offered, all right, blank stare, We'll give you another clue. This role, which was ranked number thirty seven on Premier Magazine's one hundred Greatest Performances of All Time in two thousand and six, was based on one of his uncles and a fellow marine he served with, who he characterized as someone who quote probably became a serial killer. Oh my gosh. He didn't name the marine. He just said that somebody's served with.
23:27 You know, this is I mean, this is I mean, it's an iconic role. Amber, I mean is it the French connection? Are you? Are you playing your French connection card again? Dan? I don't know. Or do you want to hold off? Do you want to well give me, give me another you want the quote? Yeah? All right, here, all right, here's a quote from the movie for you. How are they talking about? For christ six? Stanley? Please, I'm trying to get this done. I'm excited, but. I'm getting fed up. Oh what about your asking me questions all day long? I can't see why a couple of questions about what the hell's going on can get you so out of joint because I can't sit here and explain the personal problems of my clients.
24:10 I heard if you filled me in a little bit once in a while, do you everything. That It has nothing to do with me and even less to do with you. It's curiosity. Do you ever hear of that? It's just goddamn human nature. Listen. If there's one surefire rule that I have learned in this business is that I don't know anything about human nature. I don't know anything about curiosity. That's not part of what I do. What I this is my business. That's the que that's the quote that Look, Amber, here's did. You google most obscure Genman? To be fair, he doesn't have a lot to say in this movie. And I knew this was gonna be tough for you because I know you haven't seen this film. Oh and it's something Well, hey, I don't have to tell you. I don't have to tell you man, we're talking all right, Well listen, I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I'm gonna end a suspense. We're talking about Harry call in the conversation.
25:01 Oh, yes, we just spoke about this. Yeah, I've yet to watch it. Amber, It's one of the most incredible performances. I'm with Premier Magazine's choice there. I mean, he ranked number thirty seven with them, ranked number seven with us. It's such an amazing film. And I didn't think it was a failure. Well it it really didn't do the critically claimed. Yeah, critic critically critically claimed. It's it's it's amazing. It just it didn't find an audience when it first came out. That's okay. Yeah, it's such a good one. And I don't know if we talked about this, but uh, have you seen the Will Smith thriller Enemy of the State.
25:44 I mean, I know I did when it first came out. I don't remember almost nothing about it. Yeah, but do you remember Hackman playing like a guy that's that's helping Will Will Smith take a surveillance guy. Yeah, he's like a guy like a Yeah. That's what's amazing is that Hackman basically looked and I think the character's name is brill in Enemy of the State, but he basically was like, Hey, this is this is the character I played the conversation and the directors like, yeah, I'm with that. So they even change like the set design of you know, in the Enemy of the State, like Brill's hideout looks very very similar akaa identical to Harry Harry's hideout in the conversation.
26:32 I have to do like a double feature. Oh, it's such a fun double feature. It's one of those things like they've never really came out and officially said this is what's happening. But Gene Hackman said, come on, that's I'm playing him again. Yeah, I'd love to hear I'd love to hear your take on the conversation. It's such an amazing film. But moving on because we got we've got more amazing roles to talk about. Are you ready for number six? Yes'm I'm hoping to redeem myself. Yeah, you're you've hit a He've had a rough patch here in the middle of the top ten. So well, he's. Done so many, like you can't even go by the timeline. Well, if there's any consolation, you know, as we get closer to like the top three, it's gonna get easier.
27:15 Of some of his roles are just they're too they're too big, they're too iconic. Right, But let's let's h let's get to number six here. So, during an interview with Vanity Fair. Ben Stiller revealed that this Gene Hackman film changed his life and made him want to become a filmmaker, and when he shared this information with Gene Hackman, Gene replied, oh yeah, money job, calling it, calling it like he's easy. He's just he's doing it for the money. That's blowing me away, because like, really, Michael Caine is the one who's famously he looked at the paycheck and the location, know and he made no apologies for it.
28:03 I've never heard that about Gene Hackman. It's so funny. Yeah, oh, it's fantastic. All right, let me let me give you another one, okay, and you're gonna get it. I think this is gonna be this is gonna get it for you. I mentioned that Geen had done The Night Show with Johnny Carson. Yes, so he's on the Night Show with Johnny Carson here on this one. And while discussing his role in this film, Jeane, he had a lot of wonderful things to say about the cast and about this this uh, this actress, but Jane claimed that this famous co star was the only woman who could argue with you underwater. You know it. You got to know it right, yes, right now? Oh you're watching right what are you watching? What are you watching right now?
28:51 I'm watching The Poseidon Adventure. Yeah, Reverend Scott in the Poseidon Adventure? When did I get. But Davin don't fight against? They was all. How many more tier fighters? How much more brunt? How many more lives? You on another live? That's take me. This is one of my favorite genes. He talking about Shelley Winter. He's talking about Shelley Winters. That's amazing. Well he shares, he shares this wonderful story about you know how he's like the hero in the in the film and he has to swim, you know the famous scene where he's swimming underwater for like over two minutes. Well, and then the wreckage hits him and he's trapped, and Kelley Winters is like, oh, I used to be a champion swimmer. I can do it, and everyone's like, no, you can't, you know, and he's going under you know.
29:52 She basically saves his life, the character's life. And he said they were using like these rebreathers and even underwater, like she would argue like like he like they were trying to communicate and she would you know, act out like this is how we're gonna do it. But he was laughing, he was having a good time, and he he had he had a lot of wonderful things to say about Shelley Winners. It's it's Reverend Scott, though, I mean he's so iary in that. I love a good disaster movie, but this one is for me. It's the king of the disaster films. You know, when you look at this an earthquake and Tower Inferno. I was gonna say this one entire Inferno are very close. But but this is this is when when you've got Gene Hackman, who's kind of got like this rebellious preacher performance, and he's kind of like adapting like it took me.
30:44 I was as a little kid, I never understood it, but as an adult you kind of get where Hackman and like Reverend Scott basically is like combining multiple religions. You know, he's he's he's he's Christian, but he's a he's a little bit of Buddhists and he's a little bit of the you know, he's it semost like he's taken a little bit of like he's taken like the best of everything that works and putting that into a sermon. And you know, you and I have already talked about this. We we love anytime Gene Hackman is gonna yell at someone, yes, you know, but damn it, don't fight against us. He's so good, so good, one of the great cinematic yellers.
31:29 Yeah, and this it's funny. Like as as a little kid, obviously I know Gene Hackman as a certain kind of actor. And when I finally got to the Poseidon Adventure, I was like, wait, this is Gene Hackman, the action star. You know, I wasn't familiar with the seventies Gene Hackman that much, you know. Yeah. I discover him in like eighty six, you know, when he's in Hoosiers, and then I'm like, oh yeah, and obviously Superman and stuff like that, but it's like the muscle bound action hero Gene Hackman. I didn't know that. And Poseidon Adventure led me to the French connection, and that led me to other Gene Hackman roles. That's like, this guy's awesome, you know, so kind. I kind of understand why he didn't want to be type cast as an action guy, as a tough guy. It makes a little bit of sense when you look at the Posidon Adventures.
32:19 Well especially, he probably felt like once people found out he was a marine, yep, that they pigeonhole him and he'd never get away from it. Did you know that he lied to join the Marines? No, he lied about his age. He was only sixteen when he joined. Oh my goodness, Yeah, he got it. He did it, He did his time. You know, just wanted to didn't want to wait. Yep, Well I don't want to wait. I want to talk about the number five overall. Pick. Let's see how you do here? Oh god. Jack Nicholson wanted this role. However, he was serving as a witness in a lawsuit and that kept him from taking any work for six months. Jack tell's producers. Imagine you're the producers. I mean Jack Nicholson is telling, is talking to you and advising you on how to how to proceed with his film. Jack told the producers if they found another actor, they could go ahead without him.
33:20 I mean that's I mean, that's power. Like he's, yeah, we didn't hire you for the role, but thank you for letting us move forward without you. Uh So, while while Nicholson is in court, they go get Gene Hackman, who famously believed this film would be a big flop. Now after the film's released, Jack Nicholson praised the film, saying the movie and its cast were great, but if they had waited for him to star in it, it would have been a mega hit. Oh my, Jack much just all over the place. All right, you want you want another? Yes, you got an idea.
34:01 I had no clue. All right, the director, you know what I was. I was not going to give you the director's name. But I feel like he's obscure enough that maybe you're not going to get this immediately. Maybe some of our listeners might, but but I don't know. The director of this movie, David Ansbaugh, had this to say about working with Gene Hackman. Quote, before filming, I was so excited to have Gene Hackman. He was the coolest guy to hang out with. He was funny and irreverent and told great stories and all that. And then first day of shooting, I didn't recognize him. He became an entirely different person, and he just made it hell on Earth for me every day. Now, you gotta remember, Hackman was known for his no nonsense approach on set. You know, particularly with the directors, there's a there's a great uh. I don't know if it was like an inside the actors studio or what it was, but uh, there's a great conversation between Clint Eastwood and Wes Anderson. They're talking about.
35:06 Wes Anderson a hard. Time, yes, and it's just it's funny to hear as as difficult time as he's giving Wes Anderson, who's young and inexperienced, he's doing that to Clint Eastwood, and Clint Eastwood's kind of la laughing and chuckling with Wes Anderson, is like, yeah, he was tough. If he didn''t to do something, he was gonna do it. If he didn't want to do it your way, he was gonna let you know. So can you imagine having the spine to like give Clint east what a hard time? I well, if you're pop Eye Doyle, I mean, I guess you can you can get away with it, I guess. But when you're Wes Anderson, you're I don't know if you've ever seen the behind the scenes stuff on the Royal Tenebaums where he's trying to give I just direction story No, Oh my god, it's it's it's on YouTube.
35:53 You gotta you gotta watch it because the look that Gene Hackman is giving Wes Anderson. I mean, if cartoon daggers could be shooting out of his eyeballs, it's. It's happening, and just go home and cry. Well the David Anspaul said, you know, for this, this role, this this movie that we're talking about. In the number five spot, he did say that the first time he ever realized he had had an anxiety attack, it was because of Gene Hackman, is what what he claimed. He was that here he was assuming he was gonna get fired, like you know, Jean's agent was pushing for it at the studio, was like, we've seen the dailies of this film.
36:34 This film is amazing. David's not getting fired. And ultimately another the co star shows up three weeks into shooting, and then all of a sudden, and now Jean's having a good time because because his buddy's here, So any any idea what we're talking about. Yet, absolutely no clue. All Right, I'm gonna play. I'm gonna give you this and then you're gonna know immediately. Okay, forget about the crowds, the size of the school, their fancy uniforms, and remember what got you here. Focus on the fundamentals we've gone over time and time again, and most important, don't get caught up thinking about winning or losing this game. If you put your effort and concentration into playing to your.
37:18 Potential to be the best that you can be. I don't care what the scoreboard says at the end of the game. In my book, we're going to be winners. Well, I'm crying because it's Hissiers and I just watched it this morning. Coach Norman Dale and Hosiers. We I think this was this might have been the fourth episode for our nineteen eighty six series, Our good buddy Dayton Johnson, you know this was. This is pre Docking Bay seventy seven. H for it. Dayton Johnson showed up to talk Hoosiers with me and loved, loved talking about Hoosiers. It's one of those things like eighty six. You know, we had such a fun time. You know you've done you did plenty of those episode with us, and they're so fun. But that's just us, like having a good time and just being casual, like we didn't really get to peel the movie back and really dive in and talk about it.
38:09 So but Man coach Norman Dale definitely a top five of all time for Gene Hackman. I'm glad to see it's in the top five here. Yeah, absolutely absolute. Did you know that there is a cut? It's it's like a two and a half hour cut, maybe a little bit longer that initially existed in the studio was like, it's this is way too long. You cut it, you know, they cut it, Like I think the runtime of the of the movie now is like one hundred and fourteen minutes. There's a whole big chunk of the movie that's that was cut out. I wish they would re release it like a collector's edition. Yeah, you know, a director's cut. David Ansbaul said, you mostly what you missed out on is the budding romance between him and Barbara Hershey, which you know, you and I just talked about Barbara Hershey.
39:01 But all that that subplots kind of was cut so that they could make time for the movie, you know, and. It does kind of take a rather abrupt yeah. That forward, like yeah, like she goes from like. She's so hateful to him when he first arrives, Like it's intense. Yeah, they to like, you know, I've never cared more for anyone, you know, it's like, yeah, what happened? I have a fun fact for you. Yeah, laid on me. My dad's cousin her house was used for Norman's House. No, are you kidding me? No? That movie is was my dad's teenage yeers. Like my dad was Jimmy oh wow when he was this film in high school in Little Eaton, Indiana.
39:48 So that's why I can't, like, I almost never watch it because I just cry. I missed my dad so much, you know. Yeah, but it's such a beautiful movie. What a what a wonderful connection to that film though for you, I mean, you know, I hate to think that you get you get very emotional about it. It tears you up. But to have such a oh there's Christmas house. Yeah, call Chris up. We need we need to do like a like a another Oh okay, well. But yeah, it would be fun to have her on. We have her on. I was I was gonna say, let's pack up and head there. Well, we'll record a Hoosier's Deep Dive episode in normal on location Yeah. Yeah, love love Love Hoosiers, fantastic Amber. Let's take another quick break and when we get back, we'll talk a little bit about some of the awards and accolades that Jane collected over his career. Welcome back. We are halfway through our top ten favorite performances by Gene Hackman. I want to talk a little bit about the awards and the accolades that this guy received over his lifetime. So Gene has been recognized by the Academy Awards, the Golden Globes, the Blockbuster Awards, the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the BAFTA Awards,
41:19 and countless film festivals, with thirty four wins and forty nominations total for his filmography. Pretty amazing, That is amazing. Yeah, Gene was nominated for five Academy Awards, Best Supporting Actor for Bonnie and Clyde, I Never Sang for My Father and Unforgiven, and Best Actor for The French Connection and Mississippi Burning. Obviously, he won the Oscar for The French Connection and Unforgiven, and rightly so. I mean, when you even when you go back and you look at the talent that he was up against, he was the clear Cut winner.
41:59 Yeah, that's always interesting to see, like who else was nominated? And when you go on YouTube and you watch those old segments from the Academy Awards, and I'll tell you like his the one where he wins for the French Connection. E. Liza Minelli is presenting it. You go back and watch it, It's she's all over the place. I don't know if she was just super nervous or she was high on coke. I don't know what she was doing with Liza. Could go either way, could go either way, right, you know, he won the Golden Globe for Best Actor three times for The French Connection, Unforgiven and The Royal Tenant Bombs was nominated for five other Golden Globes, and in two thousand and three at the Golden Globes, I think it was the sixtieth Golden Globes, he won the Cecil b de mill Award. And I mean, of all the times you've seen him accept something, I think this is the best one because you know, winning the the cecil b de mill Award. Lord he he says, you know, he's got this big grin on his face and he h he says, there's a line I always wanted to say top of the world, Ma, top of the world, and you're just like, you're just enjoying the moment with him, you know, because you know, of course this is this is the iconic line given at the end of White Heat, which starred one of his idols, James Cagney. So it's a it's a cool moment to watch again. Like I you know, I was randomly looking up Jeene Gene Hackman
43:31 on YouTube here and there and just just to see some of the the moments he's had. It was just it was fun. But we've got a top ten to finish, Amber, so let's continue with our number four choice. And again he's got to be getting easier because we've we haven't mentioned some of his big ones, so no no pressure, but number four. Jean took the role only after al Pacino, Warren Batty and Tommy Lee Jones passed on it. Wow, it's a good company to be keeping. But I'm saying when you when you guess this one, you're gonna be like, how were those guys even even considered?
44:12 Right? You know, although his character should rightfully wear a blue ball cap Jeane or a scarlet one, which technically denotes Marine Corps personnel aboard US Navy ships. And again you got to remember Jean serving in the Marine Corps from like nineteen forty six to nineteen fifty one. Okay, so I'm pretty sure I know what it is. But you want I'll give you. How about how about a quote? Yeah, the character says, mister Hunter, I've made the decision. I'm captain of this boat. Now shut the fuck up. I just watched this last night. This would be Captain Ramsey from Crimson Tide. Yes, one of my favorites.
44:58 All time favorites, right, yeah, and it's such like it's not the greatest movie. It's like The Rock but underwater, you know, even got the same music. I have never thought about it being The Rock Underwater. That's blowing my mind because it's all kind of falling into place that does make it makes a lot of sense. But it's got, you know, a great supporting cast of like everybody on the cusp of being super famous. And I mean it didn't make number one on my list just because it's really Denzel's movie. Okay, but Gene.
45:39 Hackman is so perfect in that role. Like he's just he's just the right age He plays it just right where you kind of don't like him, but you kind of have to like him. He he's so complicated. I gotta be honest. There's times I watch it and I'm I'm team Gene. Yeah. There's times I watch it I'm I'm team Denzel. Yes, and it go. I go back and forth on it because and I love I love the way the movie ends, because it's one of those well you're both wrong and you're both right, and I love how Jason Robarbs kind of explains that in like a nice little cameo by Jason Robarbs. By the way, Yes, I love how he kind of explains, like, you know, you guys have created like the perfect storm of this should never happen, and now that it's happened, how we're going to fix it kind of a thing because they're they're both right, but they're both wrong, and it's the just the performance that that he has as Captain Ramsey. I love Denzel. When he asked about and when he was asked about Crimson Tide like one of one of his reasons for going after the movie. Talking about Gene Hackman, he said it was his chance to duel with one of the masters.
46:50 I thought, wow that that's on screen because you can see where they've there's a little bit of friction right from the get go with them. Oh yeah, but there's also. Measuring body parts the first time they. Meet, Yeah, to speak. I think I think they're they're discussion about the uh, the Lippons Honor Stallions. Yes, and then the moment when it happens in this like you have three minutes and they sit there, you have three. Minutes, Yeah, they talk. I think I think someone clocked it. It's like two minutes thirty eight seconds that scene goes because like the last sixty minutes of this is almost real time it plays out. Yes, expert direction from from Tony Scott as far as I'm concerned.
47:37 Speaking of horses, do you ever see those Lipins on her Stallions what from Portugal? The Lippins Onner Stallions, most highly trained horses in the world. They're all white, Yes, sir, Yes, sir, you're where they're all white? Or yes, sir you've seen. Them, Yes, sir, I've seen them. Yes, sir, I'm aware that they're all white. They're not from Portugal, They're from Spain and at birth they're not white. They're black, so.
48:23 I didn't know that that they are from Portugal. But they are so good in that moment. It's one of those it's like de Niro and Puccino in the diner scene and heat. Yes, you wait, it's one of those movies where it's like, is Gene lucky to be working with Denzel or is it the other way around because they're both to the greatest actors of their generation. Yeah. I mean, this scene has so much tension, and I love how calm and collected they both are as they talk about horses while we may or may not be on the brink of nuclear war. It's so good.
49:08 It's so good. Yes, And then there were three amber. I mean, I have three left on my list. No, I have four, and one of them is not gonna make it so. Okay, okay, Well, as I said, it's it's gotta get easier for you, this one the number three. The director of this film advised Gene Hackman to base his performance off Darryl Gates. Do you know who that is? I feel like I should, but no. Darrel Gates was the longest running chief of the Los Angeles Police Department. He also founded the swat team and founded the DARE program to educate kids about the dangers of drugs. You remember that one we were kids like Dare to keep drugs. Yes, yeah, this is the police chief that created the DARE program. He created the swats and the director said, hey, I want you to I want you to base your performance off of this guy.
50:06 So and that may be a little misleading when you find out who we're talking about. Now, Yeah, let me give you, let me give let me give you another clue. Yeah. After appearing in this film, Richard Harris a deal for the three people that are listening and going, who's Richard Harris? Denvil Dark? After appearing in this film, Richard Harris, who had a great deal of respect for Gene Hackman, described him as quote a truly dangerous and intimidating actor. Yeah, do you know which you know what we're talking about? Who are we talking about? We're talking about little Bill Daggett from Unforgiven.
50:50 I don't do it like this. I was building. Deserves. Have nothing to do with it. I'll see you in hell with your money. I was so worried that you were gonna say, we're talking about pop I Doyle Well it could have been that I was trying. I was trying to mislead you intend yeah, a little bit. This movie. He's so horrible in this movie, Like it turns my stomach.
51:31 It's I mean, he's like, he's played some amazing bad guys, but this might be, oh my god, it might be his best bad guy. Well, first of all, it's just the best movie. Oh gosh, ya absolutely, I. Mean, if not the best Western. And again we just talked about him facing off against Denzel Washington mm hmm, him facing off against Clint Eastwood. It's cinematic history. It's so good. Yeah, it's just, oh my gosh, a villain. Like twenty years before we get Unforgiven. Someone tried to make it and they wanted They actually offered the Will the Will Money role to Gene Hackman and he's like, no, I don't want it. And then after he decided he didn't want to do violent films anymore, Clint Eastwood's like, no, I need you, and he basically he talked. They had a conversation. He was like, I'm I'm worried about the gun violence in this film. And this was at a time when gun violence is on the rise. In America.
52:34 So Hackman is notably concerned about it, and he was like, I don't want this to be gratuitous. I don't want it to be misleading to people. I don't want to glorify it. What what what are we? What are you thinking? In Clint Eastood was like, listen, that is not gonna be the case in this film. So yeah, but boy is it brutal. Certainly is hack. But oh my gosh, so good. But like you need to I feel like you need to watch a lot of his other movies before you watch this one, because I feel like it would turn you off. Like I don't know that I could watch him for a long time after. That's interesting to me. To make that bad. But that's a that's actually that's a great compliment to his performance. Oh yeah, you know, when a bag you have to care. You know, it's been said many times, you have to care about the villain as much as you care about the hero. Yes, So if you don't, then you're not you're not going to invest in them, You're not invest in the movie. Right, I'm totally invested in Unforgiven. I love every bit of it. It's so good, you know, But let's move on our number two pick.
53:40 You know, we talked about Gene not being the first choice for Captain Ramsey and Crimson tide Amber. He was the sixth choice to play this role, and even after he got it, he was widely regarded as being miscast. Oh my gosh, yeah, when I have the clue. Yeah, because I think I know what it is, but I didn't know that. Okay, Well, of this particular role, Hackman said, quote, I found out very quickly that I am not a violent person, and these cops are surrounded by violence all the time. There were a couple of days when I wanted to get out of the picture. How about now, Well.
54:21 I already tested twice, But I think it's the French connection. I think this time you play your fringe connection card. We're we're talking about Jimmy Popeye Doyle in the French connection. All right, Popeyes here, get your hands on your hands, get off the barn, get on. The wall, come on, move. What's my name? Doyle? What mister Doyle? Come here? You pick your feet, you get over, get your hands on your head. We told your people are coming back. We're gonna keep coming back here until you clean his bar, keep your eye on your neighbor. All right, come over here, come.
55:01 Who that's what I call you? You? Uh? When when's the oscar for it? I mean the French Connection masterpiece, William Freakin's masterpiece. Right, yes, yes, for sure. I for the longest time, you know, again I'm watching this movie. You know, as a much younger person, always confused by by Popeye's you know catchphrase, you know they want to talk about, Yeah you ever pick your feet and kept saying I could never figure out what that meant. I always it always confused me. And then I finally, years later, I found out that what it was doing to me was the whole purpose of the catchphrase. It was it was something that Popeye was doing when they were like questioning a suspect, you know, Roy Scheider's like the good cop, you know, asking the straight questions. Popeye is asking these weird, strange questions all to throw the guy off off off base, like not know what to think, you know, and confuse him so that he then would give give up the truth, you know, he would he would then you know, like, what what did he just say?
56:15 And then rud Scheider says something and you're like, yeah, and you just answer because. I can't answer, because I can't answer this. What are you talking about? The whole idea behind the behind the line it was to confuse people when you're when you're being questioned. It was actually it was it was something that you know, they picked up on, like when they were doing research for the film. It's like a real thing that that you know, police detective had once done or used to do. Just a weird CATCHPHRASEO right, yeah, yeah, it's uh man, this movie it feels like maybe. You're really on like a cop beat, like a cop steak out whatever, like because this is the seventies in New York.
56:57 This is exactly what it. Was, like dirty and they're shooting without permit. It's like they like, this is one of. The greatest garbage everywhere. It's one of the greatest car chases ever. Yes, And it wasn't like they had the roads blocked off and like, you know, you see a couple of accidents, like people getting banged into it's that shit was real. Freaking's off the chart. You know, he's he's gonna freaking's gonna do what freaking wants. Yeah he doesn't, I know he doesn't. But by the way, we're we're gonna be talking about him later this month. Uh, we get a little bit closer to March madness. You know, the end of the tournament, we're gonna be talking about blue chips. So oh, be ready for that one. We're gonna take one last break, a quick one, and then we've got honorable mentions, yes, mentions plural, and the number one pick when we when we return welcome back amber. Before we talk about our choice for number one, I think it's only fair that we briefly mention a few honorable men. There were actually three.
58:02 When you looked at all these lists you're compiling all this data that that got thrown at me, there were three performances that tied across all the voting, and well, I want to you know, you know me, I'm going to give you one honorable mention. I'm not going to give you this this nonsense. Whe It's like, well I got five honorable mentions. No, no, you don't get one. But listen, I think each of them deserves a nod. You want to take any guesses before I mentioned them again. We're gonna be brief, but any guesses as to what these three might be. Well, one of them is going to have to be The blind Man from Young Frankenstein. Yes, the blind Man and just knowing the boys that I'm dealing with, I know you all had it on a list someone.
58:50 Such a listen it. It didn't make everyone's list, but a lot of people had tagged at the end of it like, hey, listen, if there's an Honora mention, I would say, yes, you know the blind Man and Young Frankens. It's such a quick moment in the movie. But Jane is hilarious, right, And coincidentally, all three of the of the honorable mentions are comedic roles. So that'll give you a clue if you want to, if you want to take a second get if you want if you want to try and get the other two, any any ideas well? Mine was Lowell from Postcards from the Edge, but I don't think anybody else. I'm good. I will reveal to everyone you were the only person to write Postcards on the Edge, and that's and that's fair. That's fine because I can tell you there were like nine twelve other movies that got a mentioned on someone's list, and I was like, oh, that's a good one, but no one else is going to pick that, you know, so the other two were looking at comedy.
59:53 Royal ten of bombs, Royal. Ten of bombs. Yeah, he wins, he wins the globe for I was honestly, I was a little I was hurt and a little surprised. Initially no one is talking Royal ten of bombs and that was on my list. I think it's one of his best for a long time. I had to, like you said, it's it's tough to cut down to ten, but right this is one of my This is absolutely this is my favorite Wes Anderson film. It's one of my favorite Gene Hackman roles. His Royal is such a schemer and a dreamer. I love the moment, like when he's trying to connect with his grandsons and you know, and then he's like telling, he's sharing stories, He's he's trying to romance Angelica Houston. There's so many amazing Gene Hackman things happened in this one movie. Anyone, if you have not seen The Royal ten and Bombs, I promise you it's it's one not to be missed.
1:00:50 And it's one of Gene Hackman's best roles. I'm glad. I'm glad it made honorable mention at least God one more. For you, Amber, and it's any one too. It's a it's a comedic role, and it's Gene Hackman being a little sleazy, being a little smarmy, being a little silly. Based based I'll give you. I'll give you this hint real quick, based off an Elmore Leonard novel. Oh, gets Shorty? Yeah, talk about Harry zim and get Shorty? Oh? I forgot about that one. When you when you think about him being a tough guy for most of his career and then him just getting the shit kicked out of him throughout this movie, it's hilarious. I love it. But uh, and now we arrive at the role that we collectively feel is our favorite. Amber.
1:01:39 You don't need any clues because you already know what it must be. Yep. But let me share two fun little clues with you and the listeners, because I'm sure they know they know what's about to hit two. It's a role he initially refused on the grounds that he didn't want to shave his mustache off for so the director Richard Donner made him a deal that he too would shave his mustache off. Hackman agrees, only to discover that Donner had worn a fake mustache that he peeled off at the last moment. And this, you know it's Hackman went up was on records saying, you know, I kind of respected him for that as kind of a it's a cool move, you know.
1:02:22 And while he did concede on the mustache, he flat out refused to shave his head, which led him to having multiple hairstyles in this film, the idea being that the character's vanity called for him to wear different wigs, and Hackman didn't even like the idea of wearing a bald cap during the ending. So, Amber, what is the number one most favorite film role for you, me, and and most of us listening? The greatest criminal mind of our time? Lex Luthor. So problem. Everything west of this line is the richest, most expensive real estate in the world.
1:03:05 San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco. Everything on this side of the line is just hundreds and hundreds of miles of worthless desert land, which just so happens to be owned. By Alex Bluetor Incorporated. Now, call me foolish, call me here responsibly. It occurs to me that the five hundred megaton bomb planet at just a proper point would destroy most of California. Millions of innocent people would be killed. The West Coast as we know it would fall into the sea. Bye Bye California, Hello New West Coast, My West Coast.
1:03:45 Costa de Lex, Lutherville, Marina Delex, Odisburg, Odisburg, Bosts, Mantraka. She's got her own place, Otisburg. It's a little bitty place, Otisburg. Think about all the people, all the actors that have played Lex Luthor, whether it's whether you're talking Clancy Brown voicing him in the animated series, or Michael Rosenbaum or Kevin Spacey. There's so many talented actors that have taken on this role, and I think it's fair to say that every single one of them looked at the blueprint that that Gene Hackman provided for him.
1:04:26 Absolutely. I think even the comics started to change Lex after that movie, because in that DNA of that performance is like Lex Luthor for President later on. M h, You're absolutely right, and the way Hackman portrays the character, I'm sorry, even as a little kid loving you, I'm one of the biggest Superman fans you'll ever meet. And even as a little kid watching Superman, I didn't dislike Lex Luthor. I mean, you know you're supposed to be. No. Yeah, he's so charismatic, and even when he's being cruel, like the the just his lines where he's berating otis played by Ned Beattie, it's it's too good, you know, It's just it's just too good, you know. The the gorgeous, the lovely uh Valley Prime friend friend of our friend of ours. Yes, her her banter with with Gene Hackman as Miss test Macher just legendary, you know, and uh, it's funny. I was like, there's things that you think about, like like Gene, you know, he clearly remembered being fourteen when his father left left home and didn't come back, you know. And then in Superman you've got him saying, I remember one of the one of the most important things my father said to me. And she's like, get out, he asked. It's like, you guys thought, was it in the script or was that like an ad lib where we're just getting a little too close to home. I don't know, but I don't care who is in the
1:05:56 scene with him. He I mean he he has control of the set. Yeah, well and Superman walking around. Yeah. He He goes from being terrifying to charming in like a second. Like the first thing we see him do is murder somebody. Yeah, he murders a murders the police chief or a police detective. And it's funny because he's making fun of of Otis. And then and then he murders this guy and you know, Miss test Mark, that's sick. You know, he's like, you know, even when he doesn't speak, like he lays out his planet a Superman with the with the missiles, you know, one one head and the Hackensack, New Jersey and miss test Mocker relax, my my mother lives in Hackensack. And he looks at his watch and looks back at just shakes his not like how devious, dude, but you know like that's that's your lady, and you're gonna murder her mom? Like come on.
1:06:52 Well, then in two when he sees like the most terrifying aspect Superman is what if we lose control of him? Which is not something I would ever consider. But my son is a huge Batman. Fans I've heard about this a lot. But so you get three super villains that show up and Lex sees it as an opportunity, like, yeah, I'm throwing in with you, guys. I hope you defeat this boy. Scout think of it, Miss test Smunker, not one, but three, three, all with his powers and it's it's great the way Australia, the way he plays both sides though, like when he's over his head and Superman shows back up with his powers.
1:07:43 Thank god, I mean getting so good. I was nothing made happier than seeing Lex Luthor at the top of just about everybody's list. I'll tell you this. He wasn't he wasn't number one for everybody, but he was on every single list that we got, and typically it was like within the top three spots. Yeah, he was number two for me just because Mississippi Burning is such an amazing movie. It is and that performance is like seared into my brain. So I had to put that at number one, believe it or not. But uh yeah, Lex is definitely if he's not one's.
1:08:24 Too overall, Amber, are you are you happy with this list? This this top ten that we collected. It was it was a really fun list and you know, I've got some things that I haven't seen that I get to watch. I gotta tell you, I'm I'm impressed with I thought I would have to coach you and help you a little bit more with with guessing, and you you only missed two. Well, you know, I am the VARIAONEE of the group. I want one hundred percent. So I'm disappointed. Well, you know, I. Was not perfect, but it was fun. You had great. It was fun. Thank you, Thank You're difficult. They were challenging I. Had, I had it. Well, you're you're the voice of the reason. I knew I had to challenge you. But I also wanted to challenge our listeners. I know it's always fun when you listen to a certain show and you get to play along and kind of guess before they can give it to you. So I thought, we don't typically do that, but I thought, let's let's do it one time. Let's let's say do it over.
