Set us down where we continue to show our love for everything Star Trek in its ongoing series From a film by a podcast which focuses on every quadrant of the expanding universe of Trek by covering television, animation, movies, directors, and much more. Plotting the course as always as your or Trek group, I'm David Burns and I'm Wayne White. Our co host Scott is not here this week as he is on an away mission and couldn't bean back in time. Before we get started, I would like to wish our beloved Captain Jean Luc Picard aka Patrick Stewart a very happy birthday, as he recently celebrated his eighty fourth year with us.

1:21 I'm glad you brought that up. Happy birthday, Patrick, that's right, happy birthday. So in this episode, we are going to do something a little different today. We're going to do what we like to call Trek Expectations, and with that, Wayne and I are going to share our expectations for the upcoming slate of Star Trek projects, both rumored and confirmed, coming soon to theaters and streaming platforms. So Wayne, let's get started. Oh it sounds great. So let's talk about the Calvin timeline. This has just been all over the place, Yes, it has. I think the last film we got was what twenty sixteen? Is that correct? That's right? Was that Star Trek Beyond Beyond? Yeah, which I loved. I thought that film was great. Actually, I mean it was much better than the second one. Oh yeah, absolutely would completely agree with you on that one.

2:12 But I mean it has been hot and cold with the fourth film since then. It's back and forth, the higher writers, the hier director, and then everything falls apart. Then it gets hot again. And I know Paramount did like some kind of announce the beginning of this year where they're talking about Star Trek a little bit. Yeah, and the fourth film was not really mentioned, but they did talk about a movie that's going to take place before the Chris Prime Star Trek. Is that correct? That's correct? That the origin story film that they were talking about. Yeah, so what could that possibly be, Well, the origin of Star Trek, I guess. I mean, your guess is as good as mine. I mean, this kind of came out of the blue. Yeah, I don't know what to expect on this. The only thing that I know about it is they they hired Toby Haynes to direct it. You know, I'm very familiar with him.

3:12 A lot of sci fi fans are very familiar with him. He was directed Star Wars and or oh yeah, first season. Also, he's a very he directed quite a few episodes of Modern Doctor Who as well, Yes, eleventh and twelveth. Yeah, I've met him, of course, So I met him in a very very nice guy. But he delivers good work, he does, And I mean, if he's I was really happy to hear his name attached to this because I think he's he's an excellent director, and I think he'll give us a beautiful film. But as to what it's about, I don't know. I don't know either. He also did I don't know if you've seen that episode of Black Mirror on Netflix, the one called Uss Callister, which is really unique, almost like Star Trek. Yes, I did, Yes, that was great. Yeah, so you can clearly pull that kind of stuff off, so I would be very interesting to see what he can do. But the story wise, I don't know. I mean, what I was able to dig up is it's going to be said in the prime timeline, which that's the same timeline that the next generation D Space nine Voyager, all the Discovery, all those are set in there.

4:21 But it's the aftermath of humanity's first contact with alien lives. So I guess that means right after what we see the events that we saw in Star Trek first contact, right, but you know, you know, I'm not sure if it's going to be you know, I don't know what to expect. I mean, what happened after that? This is which I guess is good because that timeline, that time area is pretty much completely unexplored, and when it comes to Star Trek, I don't think anything was really mentioned. So it's all open to them to write something good. Yeah, I think Bad Robot. Are they still going to produce it? I'm assuming J. J. Abram's Bad Robot, I think so. I haven't heard anything other than that. Yeah, And I thought I saw that Seth Graham Smith was rumored to be writing it. He did like Dark Shadows, Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter, and the Lego Batman movie. Oh I didn't know he wrote that.

5:15 Yeah, okay, okay, Well I liked Vampire Hunter. I really did. I did too. Actually that was kind of a unique film, a unique to this on Abraham Lincoln. It was so Yeah, I really enjoyed that too. But you know, yeah, there's not much out there about this film. I'm interested to see what they're gonna do. I kind of like the idea that we don't know because give us something new, something different, and we can go into the theater and don't even know what to expect, so we can be surprised. So I kind of like that. Yeah, and let's see this. This would be the the era we're talking about is, you know, after the Vulcans have already made contact with Earth, but before we had starships. So should be interesting. You know, maybe it's going to be this worry of how the first humans that go to another alien planet, first one is going to the Vulcan I don't know that.

6:04 There's so much open for this. It could be incredible. Yeah, and we'll get to see it, hopefully next year, I'm hoping or Yeah, maybe the year after, but we shall see. I hope they do make it. I'd like to see this film. Yeah, I do too. What I worry about if you know how many Star Trek projects get lifted off the ground and then they just allowed So that's my worry. Well, I think the next thing we're talking about, this this Star Trek four is a good example, if I remember. If I'm looking at it, I think they've crashed and burned five times so far with scripts. So I don't know. I don't know if it's everything to get off the ground. To be honest with you, I don't either, you know, and I've almost given up hope with it, to be honest with you, and I'm other things. Well, let's see, it's been what eight years, nine ten?

6:54 If this film is made, it'll you know, almost a decade since the last one. I just I think that's too much time. I think too much time has passed to continue it. But you know they're going to give a good try. At least they're kind of. They're talking about it. Yeah, I mean, you never know, they could give us something that we would absolutely love. I can't believe they took us long. But then when they realized they took that long, we'd be like, oh, we're glad they did because the quick they gave us, you know, that kind of thing. But who knows, well, I know they There was an interview recently with Chris Pine and he's a little concerned about playing the part of Captain Kirk. Now at this age, you know, it's being a lot older, so you know, will people still accept him? You know, he's now what I'm not sure how old he is, but he's probably close to or over where William Shanner was when. But it wouldn't matter.

7:42 I mean, did you see the Matter Dragons? He was awesome. Yes, Oh, it doesn't matter to me. But he's worried about people not accepting that, and that's that's a valid worry too. I understand his reason. I have no problem with him, really, Yeah, no, I don't. I don't mean yeah, when it comes to recasting, I've never had a problem with recasting at any of the shows. As long as it's it's it makes sense, and it always makes sense for this Yeah, I agree. Well, let's move on to the next one. This one is already being filmed. I don't know how close it is to being done. But of course that is section thirty one. I know this is coming to Paramount Plus and this grew out of Discovery. Is that right? Why? Yes, that's right, and I do believe it is done. I do think they have finished filming yet. Okay, I know what Michel yal.

8:28 Obviously it's about her character. The writers I believe are Brian Fuller Bowie and Kim and Alex Kirksman. Is that correct, that's correct? Yeah, So I believe we don't know when it really takes place, right. The rumors are that it has something to do with the Captain of the Enterprise that we saw in yesterday's Enterprise or something about that we don't really know, and it's yeah, so she hasn't taken over command yet. So that's this is what's very confusing about this. And this is why we don't know when to going to take place because when we saw Georgio, see that was would have been season three of Discovery, she was at the Guardiana forever and she was taken back in time. But you know this is a lot well, I mean, this is this is the after. This is about fifty years after her time, after the time of Discovery, so I don't know what's going on here, but it, you know, sounds very interesting. It does.

9:24 As soon as I saw that Yesterday's Enterprise has something to do with Section thirty one, I was like, ooh, because one, you're connecting something to the next generation. But who yesterdays Enterprise was an incredible episode and I would love to know more about Captain Garrett. That's what I was just going to say. She's another unexplored character, and she's a Captain of the Enterprise. We need to know more about her. Yeah. Absolutely, So I believe that's hitting Paramount Plus this fall or spring. Maybe. I don't think we got any date yet, but yeah, I don't think coming soon. Yeah, I think. I think they're still trying to figure that out. But I know the last time they said it was supposed to come out later this year, but I'm not sure that's what I thought too. I thought I saw November, but nothing concrete on that. I not for sure. Yeah, my guess is it'll probably come out between Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds, which probably what that'd be November to March that I'm guessing everybody out there, I'm just guessing. Yeah, Yeah, it wouldn't surprise me that we see this around the holidays or maybe January. Yeah, that's that's probably a good place to a ballpark in for sure. All Right. So the next one again, another series that is already you know, currently being worked on right now, and that is Starfleet Academy. Oh yeah, which takes place in the thirty second century, which is what Discovery another one that has been given birth from Discovery. I know they have done some recent casting of this, and someone's casting is pretty exciting. I agree to me, Holly Hunter.

10:48 I mean, there are some big names here that are popping up for this series just as soon names excite me. Yeah. And we talked a little bit about Starfleet Academy when we were doing Look at Us, the last season of Star Trek Discovery. But and I think as the more we watch Season five A Discovery, the more we liked the idea of Starfleet Academy and started getting into it. I'm I'm pumped for this. It's it's it sounds like a great idea. I'm glad that we're getting more thirty second century stories. I like the cast. I can't believe I never thought Holly Hunter would ever be part of Star Trek, and I mean, either it's great that they're able to get these names. There's all all the good people. There's a lot of good people working on this show. I see no problems so far. I hope they give us a great script. It looks like it might be a very fun and unique show. Yeah, and I'm a big fan of pology A Madi. No matter what that guy him, he always brings an incredible performance. So I don't know how big his role is going to be, but I'm just excited that he's a part of it. I know. I believe last week they announced like three new cast members. I don't know any of these actors. Yeah, I think they're like Bella Shepherd, Brooks and George Hawkins got announced. Yeah, I think they were going to play I think all three of them are playing cadets. Yeah, I remember reading but when they all look young, so it has to be.

12:09 Yeah, I mean this this show, they're they're still working on it, so we know very little about it. There, there's very little information as to what it's going to be about. So yeah, you know, everyone's guests as good as ours right now. So so here here's my vision of it. And I know it's not even to be close. It's Harry Potter in space. Oh that would be That would be fun? Would that not be cool? Yeah? Yeah, you know I would. I'd like to see something like that. I hope that they don't take themselves too seriously. Yeah, I think it would be. I think it'd be a lot of fun because there's a lot of potential there for more fun and you can have a fun series with with danger. I mean, Harry Potter is a great example of it. Yeah, So I hope they kind of kind of use that out a great idea and and and give us some like unique professors and teachers that we get to know and love, like Harry Potter, you know, to go into the classes and to these fun things happen in classrooms and stuff like that. Man, they have to do this, right, I hope they do. I never thought about that until you mentioned it. That's that's a great way of going about this. Yeah. And you know we've got opportunities too to see people from Discovery, you know, Tilly throu who knows who could pop up in this series. And I hope they do.

13:20 I do too, Yeah, especially Tilly, because I mean she has a lot to do with Starfleet at this point, so I can't see her not appearing. I really can't. I think they I felt like her appearances in season five were leading up to this, right, you know they were. They were hinting there, they were teasing us. So it's not gonna surprise me at all that she if she appears, and I hope she does. Yeah, I do too, It's gonna be quite interesting. So we probably won't see this, probably another year or two, because they barely just started scratching the surface and putting this together. Yeah. I love to think we see with Strange New World's coming out at the beginning of next year. I bet we don't see this. This will probably be next falls offering. It probably won't see until like September of next year the earliest. Yeah. I could definitely see that for sure, let's hope. So anyway, Yeah, well, this next one kind of has fallen behind where people don't really pay attention to it, and it's sad. And I'm talking about Star Trek Prodigy.

14:22 So season one was on Paramount Plus and I didn't I only watched a couple episodes of it, So I'm gonna be one of the ones who's not really gotten into it, but I know about it. And then Paramount Plus decided, you know what, we're not going to continue this, We're going to cancel it. Luckily Netflix jumped in and said, hey, you know, we'll take it over, and they have given us season two, which just came out, what a couple of weeks ago, when yeah, it was the first of July versus July. Now, this is a very unique situation because I believe it's like enslaved teenagers who escape. They steal like a starfleet vessel and explore the galaxy. Is that correct? That was the first season? Okay, they've kind of twisted it around a little bit for season two, and now the ship that they've stolen is gone, and now they are trying to think of the word Warrant officers on board the USS Voyager A oh okay, there with Admiral Catherine Jane Way, and their mission is to find the original crew of the Protostar, which was mentioned quite a lot and during the first season, and the Protostar's captain is Chacote, Is Robert Bell turned back? Yes he is. Kate Maulgrew is back and also Robert Riccardo is back playing the doctor in the major part, and there's a lot of returns. He sees it. It's practically a lot of I've heard a few people mention it this is kind of like Voyager season eight, which is what

15:52 has got me really excited and what has attracted my attention again to Prodigy. You know, other than the people we just mentioned, We've got Ronnie Cox returning is Jellico. We've got Billy Campbell has returned to play a Kona Nice. We got Eric Minont as a traveler. Will Wheaton's back, Gates McFadden's there. You know, with all those names, how could you not watch it come on? This show has such a huge, huge fan base. That's why I think that's why Netflix bought it, because it does have a huge fan base, and they're really rooting for season three, and from what I've seen, I hope they get one too. Well what I'm really surprised with these kind of names. While Paramount just kind of shoved it to the side. I mean, I know they've got a lot of Star Trek stuff going on. I get it, and you're looking to leave shelf something to save some money, so I get it. So I'm guessing Netflix probably gave them a little bit of money to say, hey, we'll take it over, and then Paramount using that money to put on other things. Yeah, I think, and I'm not one hundred percent certain. This is something I think I read a while back when when a show was created, back and during its for its first season, I believe it wasn't Paramount was making it for Nickelodeon. It wasn't originally intended for Paramount Plus, it was actually it was made specifically for Nickelodeon, And I believe there were a lot of changes in the background and stuff with Nickelodeon, and they kind of it kind of fell out of favor. And we see that a lot with other shows.

17:18 You know, remember Crusade. Oh yeah, yeah, Yeah, I think the same thing happened with this. They just they weren't interested anymore. Netflix was came in bought it for season season two because season two was already made. Yeah, you know, it's not like they had to make it. It was already done. They just needed someplace to bring it to the people. Netflix stepped up. I hope that it gets enough viewers. If you haven't watched it, please tune in to Netflix or wherever you can watch it. I think I think you can still see it. I'm not sure if you can see it on Paramount Plus or not, but yeah, if you can watch it. Because this deserves a third season, absolutely well, I'm definitely gonna take out season two now after you've told me about that. That really intrigued me. Yeah for sure. All right, So let's go ahead and take a break here, and then we come back. We will continue with our Trak expectations. All right, everybody will going back. We are going to continue talking about Star Trek of what we're thinking, rumors and stuff that are coming soon. Wayne, Let's talk about one that I think many people want to see, and that is Star Trek Legacy is one of those.

18:23 Is there still hope here, Wayne, I really do think there is, and I do think we will get this show, but not right away. Right now. There's a lot of Star Trek being produced. We're talking all about it right now. I mean we're making a whole episode about it. Paramount doesn't want to flood the market, makes sense, and you know, they've got we've got Strange New Worlds, We've got Lower Deck, we've got Starfleet Academy, we've got you know this this section thirty one. There's a lot of Star Trek over the next couple of years. To throw another series in there, I think would be a little bit too much. And that's they're right. I mean it is. You don't want to put too much out there. People get tired of it after a while. With the lower decks unfortunately ending, I think once Strange New Worlds starts spinning down, which will probably be I hate to say it will probably be season five.

19:22 Yes, I think there is our best chance for legacy, and I really do think we'll get it. Yeah, there's so much there that we want to see. The way The Car season three ended and you know it, we're very comfortable with that time period, Yes, and we want to see more of it. And Wayne and I have been We've known each other for a very long time. We've been to many conventions, We've met a lot of these people who are in these shows. We both love Seven of nine. We love Jerry Bryant. She's fantastic and we want to see her in a commanding role. We all do. Come on, everybody out there a minute to yourself. You want to see seven of nine being the captain of a ship. Come on, we do and that would be fascinating. The stuff that we got to see at the end of the card season three that they were hinting to what Star Trek Legacy could be. There's a lot of potential there and we I know, we all want to see it. But really really worries me is that we're losing Terry Manalis. How do you say his listen name, Terry adolescent Metallis Metalis. Well, we've lost him because Marvel got him Marvel. He's working on a Cinematic Universe TV series for Marvel.

20:37 Now, yeah, but you know, also we're talking about in my opinion, I think we're talking about a show that Legacy that won't be considered to be produced for another like two or three years. So I definitely see he I know he'll be back. You know, if they make it, he will be back. He said he would, and there was no problem. I mean, so many people will produce multiple shows for multiple platforms. I know of a couple of producers I can talk name off the top of my head that produced like six shows at the same time. You know, I don't think that's going to be a problem, but so We're talking a couple of years down the line, so by that time, I think his his commitments with Marvel will be spinning down then and then he'll be able to concentrate on legacy. They would He's definitely needed because his love and knowledge of Star Trek is what we got to see in Picards season three. Yeah.

21:29 Yeah, he turned the whole show around. He did. He brought us what we wanted. And that's another thing I discussed. You know, we got strange new worlds because Paramount heard the people. Yeah, because we said we want this, and Paramount is very aware that we want legacy. Yeah. They just they just I'm I believe that they just don't want to put it out right now and floodless with so much Star Trek. Yeah, and that makes sense because if you've flowed the market, you're gonna start getting burned out and then things are going to start failing, Yeah, and going to lose money. And no studio is in this business to lose money. We all know that, you know. So yeah, everybody thinks is you know, they want to throw everything out so fast. I mean Disney has had the same problem with Marvel. Oh yeah, Star Wars. They were trying to throw everything out too much, and it became too much. People couldn't keep up, and people were getting bored with it, so they had to slow down. I think this is exactly what Paramount what's happening with PARAMOUNTA and Star Trek. It unfortunately has some bad effects and the fact that you know, Lower Decks is being canceled after its fifth season. But I think that's what's happening right now, is they're slowing down to keep people's interest. Yeah, and you know that makes sense, it really does. It does.

22:41 We're living in a streaming world that you know, you can watch everything in one day if you really want to. Even though a lot of these streaming services are starting to go to the you know, one a week, which I like. I mean, don't get wrong, I love to bend sometimes, but the one a week you know, brings back they what we used to watch when we were in television, you know, years and years ago, when kids man, you know, where you could you see an episode and then you would talk about it. The water cooler effect, I guess you could say. So I do love that some streaming services do that. I'm that way too. I prefer to binge old DV shows, but when I get my new shows, I'd rather have it once a week. Yeah. I love that anticipation. I do too. It helps build it and gets you more excited for it. Yes, well, that's our next show that we're going to be talking about. Obviously you had to hinted to it is their final season, sadly, and of course that's talking about Lower Decks that is coming this fall on Paramount Plus. Not much to know about what the stories are going to be, or where they're going to go with it this season, or anything, or how they're going to end it. We're not going to know any of that stuff. Way they are keeping it under wraps. I couldn't find anything that anyone was talking about about what they're planning to do this season. Yeah, no clue at all, And I'm sure they don't want to get anyth out because anyone keep us excited. You know.

23:53 I'm glad they're doing that because I mean that's part of the fun. Yeah. Absolutely, I know. We had Brandon Williams on one of our episodes, Faser said the stune we're talking about the last season of Lower Decks. I know he's back. I don't know how many episodes he's directing or what he's doing. But I do know he's back for season five and I cannot wait. Hopefully we'll get him on another episode of Phasers. Yeah we can dive in. Oh yeah, me too. Absolutely, he was a blast to talk to. You know, you see his excitement in Star Trek and it was good to see that and talk to somebody who's in the business of working on Star Trek. And it's a unique perspective on the show. I mean, yeah, you don't hear too much about the creation, no of you know, the behind the scenes part of an animated series. And it was very fascinated listening to him talk about exactly how these episodes get made.

24:42 Yeah, yeah, that was really neat. So I'm looking forward to the season. Unfortunately, like I said, it's the last one for Lower Decks. I was hoping we'll get more, but who knows. I know, Brandon mentioned that they want to do a movie one day. Hopefully we'll get an animated Lower Deck. Perfect. Yeah, perfect, either theater or streaming. I'll take it, you know, Okay, just give us more Lower Decks after this season. I would be happy. Yes, Well, that takes us to the next series that we do know is coming in the spring of next year, twenty twenty five, and of course that is Strange New Worlds. They're filming those episodes currently. I don't know how close you are to being completed or anything like that that I can answer, because Anson Mount had announced that they wrapped the season on May twenty fourth. Wow, okay, they are, well, they are done filming. But I'm sure they have a lot of post production. I am sure because the special effects, everything that's in that show is top nutch. Yes, so they got a lot of work ahead of them, no doubt about it. But I know, you know, we're gonna probably obviously we're gonna get more Scottie because of the way the last season ended. I'm hoping we're going to see somebody else of the original crew show up. I don't I don't want them to rush it. I don't want it to be crowded or anything like that, because they've not really announced anything yet. I mean got he was kind of with the Brive to us. Yeah, you know, I think we'll see a lot more. Well, we'll definitely see a lot more of mister Scott during this season. It wouldn't surprise me if they introduce another one. You

26:12 know, we all have our ideas of who it'll be, but they'll probably wait till either the end of the season or they might wait till season four. I'm not sure and build it. But I'm sure they'll build up to that, because they need to build up the story to h I'm not sure. We're you sure we mentioned the character. We think that I think we both agree. Yeah, we're pretty certain that doctor McCoy will eventually appear on the show, and they're going to have to build up to that because any of you that are familiar with the original series, you know, we've we've already got the one doctor. For some something has to happen for him to stop being the Chief Medical Officer and for mccoya to become the chief medical Officer. I think that's what's going to be explored in season four, but they'll probably build up to it. I would maybe could see some of that in season three. We could. I Like I said, I hope they kind of spread this stuff out. I don't want them to get it too crowded with oh, here's a guest star, here's a guest star, and you know, and on and on. You know, don't do that, you know, if you're if you're thinking we're gonna get five seasons, which is most likely going to be the case. They've not said that, but it's most likely gonna be the five scenes to be the new number. It's the new seven for for Star Trek and nowadays. So that's what we're looking at.

27:21 So they have a lot to do since there's the season three. If they're looking at season five is being an end. They've got two seasons to give us a lot of stuff in order to connect to the Star Trek that we know with Captain Kirkt and with this show. They're still keeping a lot of things in a wraps. But I did was able to dig up a few things. Uh. They have this new season a murder mystery episode. Nice, So what that's going to be about nobody knows, but it should be interesting. I always loved a little murder mystery. It's been fascinating. They're not going to a casino, are they? And I also know they built a new set or for the show, a new science lab. It's got a transparent floor that has a pool of swirling water underneath the central work bench. So interesting that should be interesting, Yeah, fun to watch for.

28:12 We also got to some great directors. Jonathan Frakes is returning Amen direct. Yes, we love our freaks and I'm sure they'll be an extra surprise or too, just like they had in season Season two coming up, you know, I I hope, I hope we see some some guest appearances from people from another show I do too. Wouldn't that be great? That would be great. We shall see where they're going to go. This guy is the limit anymore, so nothing will surprise if they can pull it off and just not let us know, because I love when that happens. Yeah, I do too well.
