Hello everybody, and welcome back to a Film by podcast. I'm Jeff Johnson with me today the illustrious gentleman David and Scott. You have been listening to them for quite a while now. They got their start on our limited series nineteen eighty six, winning the hearts and minds of all of us. They have been doing a fantastic job this year with a Film at forty five. They have been discussing some of the most incredible movies from nineteen seventy eight. Scott, real real quick, you know, because you have the best way of explaining this. What is a film at forty five? Yeah? So it's a limited series that we started soon after nineteen eighty six, and in that series we're dusting off the end of a decade that changed cinema forever with a fresh look at modern classics and hidden gems that we can't stop watching even forty five years after their debut. I would say that sums it up, and we are not alone listeners. This

I am very excited to introduce one of those individuals. He is here with us in the studio today. I'm talking about our good friend Wayne Whited, who I think it's safe to say, would be a foremost expert when you're talking all things Doctor Who Star Trek. Definitely the historian and um and a con expert. Wayne. Welcome. Oh, hello, everybody, Thank you for having me. Yeah, I'm I'm a fan of both Doctor whom in Star Treks in nineteen eighty two, eighty two. Okay, that's going, that's that's that's going back of bays.

2:27 So let's let's talk about this guys. Um. You know, you we see it in the in the we see it online, we see it in the newspapers, we see it on TV San Diego, Comic Con, Dragon Con. This. You know, there's so many cons out there, but what is a con exactly? Well, it is a place that you can celebrate movies, enemy, cartoons, comics, you name it. It's a place to go to celebrate with fans. It's a place to go meet celebrities, which that's what a lot of people go for, to get photoshoots, to get autographs, panels with those guests you can sit and listen. I know we did one last year with Kevin Smith was which was wonderful to hear him talk. And you have a ton of vendors. You want to find something to buy, You're going to find it there. There's no doubt about it. Wayne, how long I mean, when din'd this all start?

3:22 The whole, the whole, the whole idea of a convention to meet celebrities, or to meet comic creators or can meet you know, do you have any idea how how this thing began? A conventions has been going on as long as I remember. I've always wanted to go to a convention ever since I was a little kid, but never had the means it was. My first convention was in nineteen ninety six with David. We both experienced our first convention at the same time, and it was the Visions nineteen ninety six convention in Chicago, No Wing Away. It's a great convention. We had a good experience. I've only known David for two years, at that point, but we had a lot of fun. It was a Doctor Who convention.

4:04 I'm sure baffled David because I don't even think he'd even seen series of Time. No, I didn't, you didn't. But they at that time, they were celebrating other shows. Um, they were celebrating Battle on five who which it was David that introduced me to that series and I fell in love with it. Friend was that year at that convention, and I introduced him to another show called Rick to Warfare. It was a great place. It's a great place to bring your friends. All conventions are like. It's a great place to bring your friends and introduce them to what you like, to new experiences, new shows and new movies. Well, this is this is definitely this is. This is a thing where it I mean, it's something for everyone, and you know, from people like me who I had no idea that so many existed, you know, because you we all know San Diego Comic Con that's like the super Bowl of these things. Yeah, um, and I just I'll never get to go to that. I can never afford that. But then you find out there's all there's so many the others, you know, I mean, this is, and it's big business.

5:02 You know, we're I mean we're talking about comic con. I know for San Diego. I mean this brings annually, this brings over one hundred and sixty five million to the local economy. I mean this is big bucks. You know, we're talking for what three days, four days, you know, ninety million dollars usually ninety to one hundred million dollars. Just that's just spending. That's just people going and spending. So, I mean, it's huge. But a fun fact because I was kind of curious, is San Diego the biggest one? Because that's what I've always we've always thought. It turns out that the biggest comic con ever is actually Japan's Comic Kit. It started in nineteen seventy five, and the annual attendance is over a half a million people. Wow. Look, I mean some of the ones we've already been to, they've been crowded, Like I felt like Lexington a couple months ago was kind of crowded. Could you imagine could you imagine five hundred thousand people? You know, that's going to be it's own zip code. The largest convention I ever been was that had about one hundred thousand, but I couldn't imagine five times more. I mean we could barely get around on that one. Yeah. So you know, uh, Wayne, you were talking.

6:14 You know, you'd only know Dave for two years and then you invite him on this con and I think that that that sounds about right. It takes about two years to uh it takes about two years a Dave before you want to take him on a road trip. That sounds about right. I can't argue that. But you guys the mileage. Yeah, so but you guys, so you drive, you drive to Chicago, Dave. I gotta ask you, because you know Wade mentioned you know this is this is a Doctor Who thing. You don't watch the show? What what were you even expecting? I don't know really what I was expecting. I know I was going to hang out with a friend for a weekend, and I believe it's a Thanksgiving weekend, right Wayne, Yes it was, I was correct. Yeah, Yeah, And um, I knew there was gonna be some guests there from Babylon five and I love that show, so I was excited to meet them, But than getting introduced with those other things that were there, Doctor Who in red Dwarf, of course, was a big win for me.

7:04 Yeah. So I'm sensing like a some kind of recruitment happening here because I know my first con last year happened to be Motor City Comic Con. And I remember, Dave, you were talking, uh, you know, like, hey, let's you want to go to this this, uh this thing in Detroit. I was like, what is it for? And You're like, oh, wait, you know it's there's ways going after some some people. He wants to meet some people from Doctor Who. And I'm like, and I look, I'm not knocking Doctor Who, but I know it's not my my cup of tea, it's not for me. Um. But my my immediate thought was, I mean, I'll be I'll go along for the ride. I'll see. I'm just I'm curious, and I am man, I'm so glad I did. Though, well I'm hooked on the cons.

7:53 I'm not hooked on Doctor Who. But I yet me. It was just the idea, you know, of just wandering around and taking it all in and seeing all these vendors. And I did no prep. I just like you said, Dave, you were you were going to spend time with a friend and I was like, you know what, I'm just gonna go spend time with some friends. Well, I didn't realize who was going to be there, and before I know it, I'm having a conversation with Alice Cooper. Yeah, and I'm like, I'm talking to Alice Cooper about about movies and music. This is this is the greatest thing on earth, Like what you know? I loved it? So, uh, Scott, what about you? Do you what was the first con? First con I probably went to was mid Ohio Con back when that's what it was named before Wizard Entertainment kind of took it over UM And that was in Columbus, and the primary reason for going there was as a a comic con, so it didn't really have um, a lot of celebrity guests. I think there was kind of a peppering of it, but it was more I would say, like seventy percent comic focused. So you've got creators, you've got the big names, you've got the up and coming names, you've got vendors that will sell things. And I think since then it's kind of grown and morphed into something different. I think a lot of them are characterized as comic cons to kind of take on that kind of idea or give you some kind of idea of what you're going to see, which is going to be a lot of cosplay,

9:26 It's going to be a lot of the things that we've already mentioned, but it's also going to encompass you know, voice acting, anime, wrestling, basically any kind of pop culture that you want to that you're into is probably represented at one of these events. I think there's a lot of shows that still start to kind of drift toward the comics roots, which are fantastic. I was involved with Cartoon Crossroads Columbus for a long time with Jeff Smith. There's still space which is like the small press kind of expo, But then there are some that are still the sci fi conventions. I think a lot of those do a lot of a lot of great traffic as well.

10:07 Probably my best experience with those shows, I would say one was getting to work at a table with Art Spiegelman of Mouse and actually helped them at their at their table. That was a fantastic experience. Obviously getting to meet Jeff Smith for Bone, who is amazing, and David Mack, which if you don't know his art, I have a hard time believing that because I look him up and you know who he is. The first time I met him, I was talking to him about his work on Daredevil with Brian mcabendis, and he asked if I had ever read Kabuki, and I was honest, I said, you know, I've always seen it on the shelf. I've never had a chance to pick it up. It's always been something that interests me. It's just never just hasn't happened yet. And he's like, oh, okay. So he walked over and literally grabbed a stack of books, signed them all and handed them to me and he was like, guest started wow, and you meet an Yeah, you meet a lot of people there like that that are very genuine and are very interested in kind of fostering that love for this fandom, Scott. Those are definitely those are some incredible experiences that you've you got right there my question Wayne, you know, because and I know you mentioned eighty two getting a start, so shooting from the hip here Wayne, Uh yeah, favorite experience for the past or even even recently, like you know, interaction or experience it just is yeah, yeah,

11:41 yeah, I do. And uh, probably my favorite memory of all the conventions. So this goes back a little bit. This was in David Wooden with me at this time. This is in nineteen ninety seven. I was on a summer vacation and my mom was with me and we decided to make us swing around to Atlanta to Dragon com which is a huge conventions, one of the biggest conventions in the US other than San Diego Comic Con. One of the guests down there were was John Ree Stavies. And Mom was a huge fan of a show called Sliders we chaired back in the sixth or back in the nineties, Jekyl right, that's correct, Yes, yeah, huge fan of it. She wouldn't miss a single episode and she was really excited about meeting Davies. But the day before we got to the convention, I had we stopped at the McDonald's and Mom had fallen and as we took her to the hospital and we thought maybe she broke some bones something that they X rated and everything was fine, but she was in a wheelchair. She couldn't walk around, so I ended up having to push her around in a wheelchair to this convention. But we went and we got in line for John Ree Stavies, and I was waiting for him to come out. He does.

12:54 He finally comes out in a wheelchair. He's telling the story that just the week before he was filming riding a horse and got through him from the horse, ended up breaking his legs and now he's wheelchair. Now. He took one look at my mom and he said, bring her back here, bring her back behind the table. And I wheeled her back there and he started talking to her. Just so he goes, you go on, you go enjoy the convention, just like you're here for an hour or two. So I went, and I went, and I enjoyed the convention. I came back about an hour and a half and they're just chatting. It was probably the best experience of the entire convention for her. Her eyes were just beaming. Um made her day. He signed so much stuff for us. He even gave her a little kiss on the cheek and she talked about that for years. Wow, that's just really that's a good example of how how good the actors are. Meeting them They're just they're just fantastic, they are.

13:50 And that's that's something like if you know, because this this is something we don't typically do right, guys. You know, we're just talking about a fun experience that we had and we kind of wanted to, you know, pull the curtain back and let people know, like what you can expect or what you should expect. It's those kinds of interactions. You know, when I hear about him, it makes me a bigger fan of that person, you know, or it makes me a fan of him if I if I didn't follow their work, because you know, Davey's doing that for Wayne's mom. You know, she she loves a guy, you know. I'm sure she was hoping to show up and meet him. Probably didn't think she was going to spend the day with him, you know, So that's incredible. Dave I know you've you know, just for me and you talk, and I know there have been some huge moments for you at some of these conventions.

14:37 Do you have one one close to your heart or one that stands out more than others? I think you're gonna know the one I'm gonna talk about it is an experience that we had just recently here in Cincinnati at Horrorhound. Um My nephew is a huge Scooby doof fan, and I heard of a lot of people talking about how amazing Matthew Lillard was to meet. And obviously for those who don't know, he is the voice of Shaggy. A lot of people know him from Scream, but he has done he was in the live action versions of Scooby, but he also does the voice of Shaggy for many years now in the animation. Anyway, we get to the convention, huge line. Jeff, you were there. You know, there was probably about a thousand people ahead of us to get into this place. In that room, yeah, and the lady that was in front of us when we were waiting to first get in, she told us to go straight there because they will shut down Matthew's line right away because it fills up so fast.

15:28 So as soon as they opened the doors, you know, my nephew and I race there, and as soon as we get in there, they tell us sorry, Matthew's lines is shut down. And my nephew's heart was broken, and you know, my heart was breaking for him too, because you know, we had talked this up to him for a long time about you know, meeting Matthew, and you know, so we left that room and went back to the vendors and you know, I went and met Henry Thomas at the time, and Jeff, I know you came along at a little later and took him off to see and the line was still closed. So we eventually made it back to that room, and you know, line was still closed, and we were walking around, walking around like a lot of people were waiting to jump into that line as soon as they opened it. And for anybody who knows me, um, I have a prosthetic leg.

16:11 So one of the workers that was there saw me walking around and she immediately, you know, waved me over. So my nephew and I walked over and she said, I want you to stand right here for a few minutes with me because Matthew has special rules that we must abide by. And the rule is any any anyone who has like a handicap or you know, anything that's like that, they go to the head of the line. So my nephew looked at me, was what's happening? And I looked down a him as said, you're about ready to meet Matthew. Who are so we they they they took us to the head of the line, and Matthew was just phenomenal, you know, he had probably three four hundred people in this line waiting for him, and he took his time with us. He talked to my nephew. He actually talked to his nephew about his son, who is in Paris at the time. And Matthew talked to him as Shaggy and you talk to me for a little bit, and just went on and on and on why all these people are waiting. Matthew was in no hurry at all.

17:15 He was so friendly. He signed an autograph, he took pictures and you know, I tell you I always liked Matthew Lillard, but I'm telling you I was a huge fan after that and I always will be now after that well, you know, it's that's again, just like with John rus Davies, Matthew Lillard. You go here and you hope that you're going to get to a chance to tell an actress or an actor or a comic creator, you're you know, someone you're hoping that you get a chance to tell him you know how much their work means to you, or how much of a fan you are. You know, you get hope maybe you have a moment to ask a question. And in my experience, you know, because it's only been you know, I'm I'm new to this right. Uh.

17:56 You guys, you guys pulled me into this world. You know, so I like on my fourth or fifth con at this point. But everyone that I've encountered, they have just been the most amazing people. You know. Um, Dave, you mentioned Kevin Smith. I don't know if there's a more genuine kind soul to talk to and meet. Um, He's a hugger, you No, He's a big hugger. You know. If you if you haven't had a hug from Kevin Smith, you're missing out because the guy, the guy knows he brings it, you know. But it was just it was that was an amazing moment. You know. Uh d Wallace, you know, we we've talked about her so many times on this on this podcast. You know, our our beloved favorite mom from the nineteen eighties movie Mom that is, you know, and just seeing that that big grin on her face and you know, just throwing her arms out and come here, baby cakes and you know, wrapping me up, you know, and it's like for me, I was like, this is a moment, this is ET. This is the mom from ET, This is the mom from Critters.

18:59 This, Yeah, this is how the howling, you know, like I'm I'm here with Dee Wallace. This is the most amazing thing. And she was the she was just a sweetheart, you know absolutely, you know these people when you when you get a chance to meet them, and and Motor City Comic Con this this, uh, when we just got back from definitely no different. I just haven't had a bad interaction with with the single person. I don't know if that if that, I mean, I'm sure it happens at some of these things, but we have yet to see it. I think, yeah, it's very very rare. I mean, everybody has bad days. All the actors, you know, they have bad days. But I have met hundreds of them, been to many many conventions, and I've really I've never had a bad experience with anybody really. I mean we've had we've had some disappointing things where we haven't had time or an actor wouldn't be able to sign what we wanted to sign. But as they're bad anyone mean, or or an actor that just you know that that we didn't like, I've never had an experience like that. You mentioned, You mentioned Wayne, you mentioned signing things and meeting hundreds of your favorite celebrities, we got to talk about the Doctor Who Poster. So the Doctor Who. So, just to clue our audience in and listen, as I said, I'm not a fan of Doctor Who. You don't have to be to appreciate this story, because there is something that travels to these cons with us that has, uh it's like a Holy Grail type item. So Wayne, tell us

20:30 about the Doctor who Poster. All right, a little history about that. For the first like five years of going to conventions, U I usually would get autographs on individual photos from all the actors, which which is typical. I mean usually they all have photos that you buy and then they can sign choose whatever picture you prefer from whatever movie, your show. But um, and every year Thanksgiving there is a Doctorment Comission in Chicago, so I always had every year I had an oppert to meet some well and two thousand and one it was two thousand, sorry, two thousand. I went to the convention and the photos I just wasn't I wasn't happy with the photos of choices.

21:11 They weren't from these stories that I liked. They weren't for the episodes, they weren't the right size. It just was very unhappy with the photos, so I needed to At first I thought about making my own photos, but then I was in the dealer's room and I was looking at the posters and there was a poster. It was a very simple poster, just a picture of the Tartist, which is a time machine productor who flying in the vortex, lots of space around it. And I looked and I said, this is perfect. If I just start getting everybody just to sign this one thing, I won't ever have to worry about buying or getting pictures again. So the first time I had anyone sign it was at the two thousand and two Chicago Tartists Convention. I have everyone off from the shows signed it, all the way back from to William Russell, one of the origin cast members from nineteen sixty up to Jody Whittaker, the well the last doctor who just left the show last year. And I've been able to get people from behind the scenes as well, both the producers, compostors, visual effects designers.

22:17 I have guest stars. I don't have to worry about any photos. I just have them if they were on the show or had anything to do with the show. I have them sign it, Wayne, how many Okay, so you probably have the exact number, but if you don't approximately how many signatures are on this thing right now? I keep track of every one of them because some of the signatures are really hard to read, and so I have to keep track otherwise I won't remember them. One hundred and fourteen as of MotorCity Comic Con. One hundred fourteen actors, actresses, creators on this long expanding Doctor Who series. This thing's gonna be worth, Like, I think, how do you how do you put a price on something like that?

23:02 Can't because I would know there are a few names on there, unfortunately, of people who have passed away since then and over the last twenty years, so I wouldn't even begin. It's to me, it's priceless. I mean that's the top of my collection. But see everything. Every time, you know, every time I've seen you roll this this thing out in front of someone, the look on their face just they're they're stunned. I mean you're talking like you know, because they've seen everything. They've signed a bunch of stuffy they signed photos, they signed fun copops, they sign all kinds of stuff. And then Wayne walks in with this, this amazing poster that has all these this this history, this legacy, and that that for me, Like, like I said, I'm not knowing, I might not know who Jody Whittaker. I might, I might not be familiar with her.

23:53 But when I saw her face, the shock and awe on her face and how like mystified she was, and like how in all of Wayne she was like this guy's got this? Are you kidding me? And you know, then she gets to be a part of it. So I just it. It never says how they feel. Yeah, they're they're part of something now. They see it. Yeah, they see it, and it's great because they love signing it. They love trying to figure out who signed it, trying to pick the autographs out. They're always constantly asking me, oh, did this person sign it? To that person sign it? And usually I can point right to the signatures there it is. Yeah. But one of the actresses from the show, Nicol O'Brien, who's on the show during the eighties, when she signed it, she said it felt like an honor because she was putting their name into what she called the legacy of doctor who because of so many different names from all sixty years of the series, and when you routinely get people like when you you know it all as it takes is like one second and then another person another another person at this that's that's showing up one of these events that's there to meet someone or to see someone.

25:06 They see it and then they they want to talk about it. And then Wayne, Wayne, how many times have you been you know, briefly, can you tell us like what kind of money you've been offered or how many times people have offered to buy it? Actually, I've only had one person actually offered to buy it, and that was actually not that long ago, a few years ago. Um it to me, like I said, it's priceless. He offered me five hundred bucks. But which is No, I wouldn't couldn't even begin to put a price on it. It's too much of my experiences. Yeah that I love the show so much. I followed the show for so many years, and I can look at it and I just I remember every signature. It's just it's a celebration of my love for the show. I can imagine, like, you know, five hundred dollars might seem like, you know, a generous offer to that person. And but taking into account, you know, it's I think you said more than one hundred signatures, one hundred fourteen. Multiply that by the tickets to get into those shows, the cost of paying for the autograph that the average but like hour maybe forty five minutes at a short end, at the short end of it, that you'll stand in line to get those Um, I mean that that just gives you a base aside from just the you know, it's like a it's like a walking doctor who Hollywood Walk of Fame, right, Yeah,

26:37 I look at way to describe it. Yeah, I kind of look at it. It's almost like it's Wayne's passport. You know, he's had it, He's had it stamped all these years over the all these mini conventions. But Scott, let's talk a little bit about MotorCity Comic Con the event, Like, you know, when did this thing start? So it's been running for more than thirty four years. This past year year when we went was the first time that I had ever gone. It's the longest distance I've ever traveled to get to a show. But it's right in the heart of Detroit. As the name suggests. It boasts more than two hundred and fifty comic creators, writers, artists, actors. It's really one of those big, big, kind of pop culture landmarks for the area. It runs more than once a year. They have a great setup, Like when I compared to other shows that I've seen, They've got a great way of you know, making sure that you have more than enough room to navigate through the vendors and the the comic creators and the celebrity guests, a great way to get you moving through. It's probably the biggest show in the in the area that's closest to us in Ohio. Yeah, I would think so. I mean, well, with the exception of Galaxy Con maybe in Columbus. Yeah, Galus coun pretty good. Sigttle bit bigger than that though. Yeah. But again, you know, we talk about how these things, you know, how do they how do they start? You know, they go from like

28:10 you know, they're in the the convention room of a holiday inn to then they're taking over a convention center. I believe it was Michael Goldman, guy that owned MotorCity Comics. He starts this thing and like what nineteen eighty nine, I think going through a little bit of the history, like just you know, because you're always like, now, the whole thing is who's gonna be there? Right? And for guys like us, you know, the rock stars were the comic book creators, you know, so to see like in the beginning, it's guys like Eric Larson, you know, and then it goes to like bigger names stan Lee, George Perez. You know, it just advances and advances, and it's like, Wow, I can't believe all these amazing comic creators you know are are here, you know, even when it's like someone like for us, like I know recently we saw Larry Hamma was was it one of these things? You know? Guy wrote basically wrote, g I Joe like that we grew up on. So I love seeing how how it kind of changes, you know, because I think it's uh, it's like two thousand and two thousand and one with Motor City, they get they get uh, that's when it kind of they started getting the Star Trek crowd. M huh, who was it? James Duhan? Yes, maybe I was there, you were there. I was there, see of course Wayne was there that year. Of course he was. Of course the first time I was at Motor City Comic coup was in nineteen ninety nine.

29:30 Um, they were very Star Wars century at that time becausee Phantom Menas just came out. But yeah, um I went to the two thousand and two thousand and one and two thousand and five, and yeah, I was there during Jimmy Duan when he was there, I was he was a great person to meet. Oh I bet uh. And it just it kind of blows my mind, as you know, the list of names and the celebrity it just explodes, you know because after after you get your Star Trek crowd, then then the comic book Royalty starts showing up, Adam West stan Lee, you know, all these people start showing up and then it becomes like a free for all. Um, I'll tell you right now, I wish we could have been there in two thousand and seven because Scott Dave. It would have given us an opportunity to meet Lewis Scots Jr. And we have talked so many times. We've talked to times about him on the show.

30:22 So we know one film that we talked about, Yes, yes, but I think it's pretty pretty awesome the way you know, like I said, you don't have to love comic books. You don't have to love movies. You know, you can love something or you can love it all. You could love love a little piece of it. There's something there for everyone, right Well, I gotta say, years ago some of the guests are getting nowadays, you would never ever imagine your wildest dreams that these names would be at conventions in in freaking Michigan or Ohio or Kentucky. Jeff, I never ever imagined we would meet Sam Rami or I would never imagine that, you know, with this one, Sean Gunn, Jason Isaac's I mean, come on, these are gigantic names you would never have seen at one of these conventions years ago, and now it seemed to be common practice. Well, and I mean you've also got going back to Galaxy and Columbus. You know, you probably expect stars from Star Wars, Star Trek, a lot of the you know, the standard kind of pop culture intellectual properties. But Richard Dreyfuss exactly never would have imagined Richard Dreyfuss being at a con like that.

31:36 But they're seeing how it has a chance to to reach more people, and with more more kind of work that they've done, it has a chance to kind of expand their reach. We'll talk later. I'm sure about Darryl McDaniels, with the many books that he's published beyond being dmc right, yep, it's the closest that it lets you get closer to people that you think you'll never meet. Like I never thought that I'd be getting a hug from Kevin Smith, right, um, because I don't know that I'll ever make it out to Jersey for the Secret Stash. Hopefully will, but um, you know Dall right right? Oh god? Yeah, meeting Dante and Randall was amazing. Yeah. Um. And it's it's experiences that you don't forget, so it kind of brings those worlds closer to you. Um. And it's it's definitely expanding. It's definitely getting into um more kind of guests that you won't really get to meet anybody else. Well, let's let's talk about MotorCity Comic CON's biggest draw, Great Scott, Oh my god, they found me.

32:46 I don't know how, but they found me. Him work hard about it. Who do you think Christopher Lloyd? Could you not imagine meeting him and you at a convention like this? That is crazy? Yeah, he's one of my favorite experiences at a con, which was actually kind of a different con. It was the Delirian Car Show in Columbus and they had they had Christopher Lloyd with the Delirianum. They also had Bob Gail, Like, they had so many different people from from Back to the Future they were there to meet, and Um, he took a moment to meet with my oldest son who was dressed up as Doc Brown, and he just turns around and he's like, how you do a doc and like, you know, does this great voice. But he's still doing it, and he takes the time to spend time with every single person. He used to travel with Oliver and Terry Holler, who were raising money for Team Fox with the Delirian time Machine.

33:54 So he's been he's been wearing the circuit for for a while and I'm glad that he's still doing it. I'll say one thing for MotorCity Comic Con, and how how much of a well oiled machine it was. Um, there had to be several thousand people waiting to meet Christopher Lloyd and then just take a quick photo with him in front of the Delirian. It blew my mind how fast that all happened. But how how organized it was. I mean this this, this event. I mean they are lights out when it comes to, you know, having things organized. I know, I believe it's pose is the photo op company that was that was working with them.

34:42 They do fantastic photography. Uh. And Dave, I know you're you're a professional photographer, so you know you've seen their work and you know, am I am I riot or am I No? You're right. I couldn't imagine doing something of that caliber and as quick as they're doing it. It was crazy. Yeah, But with the precision that they're doing it and the quality they're doing it, I absolutely Again, you know, you get a moment like you know, sometimes when it's someone like, hey, I'm really hoping to meet this person and maybe you have that opportunity to it. You're going to get an extra couple of minutes to talk with them. Um. And then in other times it's like you know, like we said, the big draw, you know, Christopher Lloyd and the DeLorean here at MotorCity Comic Con.

35:24 The poor man just doesn't have enough minutes in the day to to truly you know, have a long, you know interaction with someone, so Um, the time that you do get with someone like that, even on even on his level, UM, still well worth the price of emission, well worth you know. Amazing experience, absolutely amazing experience. Yeah, well you speaking of those experiences. UM, you know, let's talk about some of the people we met at this convention. Jeff, I think you had some cool interactions with Michael Bean and Sean Gunn, didn't you? I actually did. Um. I feel in retrospect, I feel bad now because we're talking to Sean Gunn the day before his birthday. If we would have you know, and we do. We do such good research on this show, Like if we were just known, like, hey, you know, it's a guy's birthday, we could have we could have brought him something, could have done something nice for Sean. But uh, I will say Sean definitely did something nice for us. We had a chance to talk with him about his MCU fate. What's next for Sean gun You know, I asked him.

36:29 The question I asked was like, Hey, when are you gonna get behind the lens? You know, we love Craglin, we love Guardians, but have you ever thought about directing your own feature? And he kind of lit up and he was like, you know, it makes it reminds me of my theater days. You know, I did a lot of directing a theater and who knows, maybe sometime in the next ten years I might might do something or or maybe Marvel's gonna call me and they want me to direct Guardians for Well, we'll wait and see what happens. And you know, you know, again, very very kind guy, a very funny guy, which you know obviously if you've seen his work, and I know you have, you know he's one of the funnier aspects of those movies. But uh, just a great, great guy. Love love talking to Sean. I hope we get to talk to him again. In the Wayne, I know you, uh you had Katherine Tate, Um, didn't you, Jonathan. First I met Katherine Tate and h both Brent Spiner and Jonathan Frakes, and then Jason Isaacs, and then I waited in a long line to meet Christopher Rooyd, A really long line which reminds me of the Karen Jallium experience that you had left here. Marin's was the line. It was Matt Smith, that was what I can definitely say that was the longest line I have ever waited for an autograph, but it was worth it. It was worth it.

37:52 Yeah, well, especially considering how far some of these celebrities travel at Katherine Tate is not next door, right, No, so God bless her for coming out and spending some time um with the fans and every every single person. She just lit up. She did, she was She was so incredibly sweet and she loved signing my poster, and I loved Evner signed it. And she's actually I told her she was probably one of the first, very first for me. Normally, when I meet someone from the from the Doctor's series, it's usually after they've already appeared on the show. But she's currently on the show. She has three episodes airing in November, so she is she is a current cast member and the first of that to sign my poster.

38:34 Yeah, Dave, speaking of sci Fi Royalty, Uh, this was your chance. You got to meet Brent Spiner finally, right after all these years. Finally I almost have the whole Bridge crew autograph for the next generation, and he was one of the three that I'm that I'm missing. I don't know why he escaped me for so many years. I don't get it. And it was finally nice to meet him. Really nice guy too. What you know, what I like a lot about these people is you know, they'll take their time talking to you, you know. And you know, Brent was just all smiles, um, just talking to everybody as they're coming along. And you know, I took a selfie with him. Um. But yeah, I complimented him on what we saw with Piccar season three, told him how much my love has been reignited for Star Trek and Knicks Generation because of what they did with Piccar season three. So yeah, great experience. I love that moment too, because you could see that he was genuinely happy to know that, you know, his work on Piccart season three has has kind of sparked a whole new audience. And and I'm standing there and I'm like, you know, just because I'm a blunt instrument, I'm like, yeah, I don't watch I never watched Star Trek Next Generation.

39:45 And he's just like, this guy, are you? But you know, but I did ask him. I'm like, hey, I know you I love your voice work. You know, I know you've you've you've voiced the Joker, You've voiced the Riddler. You know, who's who a favorite? And you know, obviously he's like, well, I mean they're both such great characters. But okay, it's the Joker. I love doing the Joker. I love talking for the Joker. So that guy was great though, a lot of a lot of energy, you know. And the fun thing is like these guys, like we've seen them on TV for what decades? Yep, Scott, are they are? They? Are they drinking the elixir, the celebrity elixer, because these guys look amazing, like they don't age.

40:28 Yeah, absolutely, yeah, And I mean they do take the time at the table, um to spend the time and you know, chat with everybody that that it comes up. Um. And you know, for as much as they're they're seeing so many people over a long weekend, you gotta think about the marathon kind of schedule they're going through. But they're still happy to talk to people. I will say, kind of you know, setting expectations when you're going to this kind of thing. The photo op is a very quick kind of one to the other when you're paying for what you want. Um, I would say any kind of experience at the table, you're going to get a lot more time to talk to somebody than you will with the photo ops. So when you're playing that out, just a recommendation now that the photo ops that you get are going to be very high quality photos.

He's like, ah, I said, I said, you know, I got to ask for the predator handshake, and he said, of course you do, you know, but you know, I just and again that was a quick one. That was like what you know, just say, hey, love your work, keep it up, keep up the great work. And you know he was he was. He was

Well, you know, the thing is like yeah, and what I mean maybe we were were there maybe what ten minutes, which I guess is like a long time when you're talking to convention time. But um, you know the thing is and again and like a little a little pro tip, you know, because I know I appreciate Scott. You've kind of mentioned, like the photo thing, what to expect. Just know this, these these these uh, these amazing people. They have talked about the their main role or their their big movie.

Um, and sometimes I think it's just fun for them to talk about something they don't get to normally talk about, you know. I mean Michael Bean, we loved him in The Terminent La, right, we loved him in Aliens, uh, the Abyss Tombstone. These are these are iconic roles and these are awesome movies, and yeah, we could talk about that with him, but I feel like anyone you know, can can read any interview, can pick up any podcast and kind of talk about his interaction on those films. I just want to know how how his latest picture was going, the Red One, which um is in post right now. It was shot on location in Brisbane, Australia. So I just I just asked him casually. I was like, hey, you know, how how was your time in Australia. And he's kind of like what and I said, yeah. I said, well, let's let's talk about the red One and he was like, oh man. And we end up having like a very lengthy conversation about vacationing in Australia. UM, I can tell you, uh, you know, by way of Michael Bean. I can tell you where to go in Brisbane. I can tell you, uh, if you're if you're not going to Broad Beach, you are missing out, because he swears it is the most beautiful beach, better than anything you've seen on the East Coast, the West Coast. Uh. We talked about we talked about the folks there, you know, because I've got I have friends

45:13 in Australia. Um. You know, I've always wanted to go there, but after hearing you know, and they've I've talked to them endlessly. You know, they live there, and they haven't got me on a on a plane over there yet. Ten minutes with Michael Bean, I'm ready to you know, buy my ticket at Quantas and head over there, because uh, we we just talked about the Little Cow and you know how how amazing the people in Australia are um I did put you know once he you know, he quickly saw that hey, we're you know, we're a show. We you know, we we were there to promote our show, and we got our shirts and our gear and all that stuff with us. But uh, you know, I said, well, yeah, can you give me a little little insight track on on the Red one? And he was like, well, I'm not you know, there's only something that there's only certain things I'm allowed to say. But you know, he did. He did take some time to talk about the incredible cast that that he's with on that one, how hard they worked, and again this is this is a very incredible actor because he's not talking about his performance, he's talking about the crew.

46:15 And he's like, Jeff, I gotta tell you. He goes, this is such a huge movie with such a small crew. These these men and women were doing so much behind the camera to make it all happen. He goes, and we could not have done it without them. This is a guy that cares about when we're talking, when you're talking about the production of something, this is a guy that cares about the people that are making it happen for for the movie. So uh yeah, we talked. We talked a lot about Australia, which was a delight as far as I'm concerned. And then he did you know. He's like, listen, he goes for you if your listeners want to know. My favorite hero role is definitely Kyle Reyes from The Terminator. My favorite villain role is definitely Johnny Ringo from Tombstone and uh. And that's when I mentioned, you know, Dave, you know I recently purchased a pair of the the rebox that they created for for Aliens in nineteen eighty six. We had a quick talk about that, and that again the conversation spun. He lit up again and he was like, wait, he goes the nikes I had in Terminator. I desperately wanted a pair of them. He goes. They wouldn't let me take him off the set. He goes, I wasn't allowed to have them. And then I went looking for him and I couldn't find him any of the stories. I said, well, Michael, that's because that was a prototype that they you know, they made for you specifically. That's that's movie history. And he's like, yeah, He's like, but if I could ever find those shoes and I was like, well, good luck, because they're out there.

47:39 But I think the last time, I think the last time I looked for those those nikes that Kyle reeswears and Terminator think they were going for like six grand, you know, at auction. So uh, yeah, I don't know. But Michael Bean fantastic guy. Loved talking with him. Hope we get to talk to him again too. He was just he was fantastic. If you get a chance to go to any con and uh and meet Michael Bean to it, I definitely strongly read argu meet meet this guy. He's he's fantastic. Yep. It makes me think I can't help but ask about another celebrity that you met that has some connection with Adidas. Oh gosh, Yes, you're talking about Joe McDaniels.

48:29 Darryl McDaniels. Yes, I was overjoyed to see that he was going to be there as a featured comic guest, which I wasn't even aware of. But he's got his own publishing imprint, if I understand this correctly. With Daryl makes Comics. Right, yep, he was there as a featured creator. He was one of the first stops that we made. Um. He was. He had a lot of different things at his booth. Obviously everybody knows him from a founding member of RUNDC. But he's got new music. Me and my microphone. If you go to his website, you'll see it looks like it's a collaboration with iced T, Chuck, d dj j I Z Jeff. He's got a new book for kids called Darryll's Dream.

One of the books that that I'm starting to read Ten Ways to Not Commit Suicide, a book that he had as a as a as a memoir I want to he put out in twenty sixteen, I think, and you had a great chance to connect with him, right, I'll be honest with you again. So for me, that was kind of a starstruck moment and we were actually there, quick plug here a good friend of our, good friend of ours, good friend of the show, Deff David Wright Def Dave has just published his third in a trilogy of books, the third Uh just just released The Armor of God. Um and you know I just thought and again, Def Dave is a run DMC historian. He's been on the Shirloo You Can't Be Serious podcast talking about run DMC. So I thought, you know, how about a how about a nice way to go congratulations kind of a thing. Uh, you know, I just asked Darryl, you know, if he had signed something for our friend def Dave. And then that led into a conversation about about writing about like Scott, as you said, he's an author himself, so we we talked a little bit about his writing. We talked a little bit about the comic dmc U Scott you mentioned me and my Microphone. There's even a comic for that. So again, this is this man is just uh one of the one of the most genuine that you will meet at an

50:49 event like this. Uh. Definitely taken a lot of time, shows a lot of interest and the people that are that are wanting to meet him and speak with him and and pose, you know, do a photo with him. And he was fantastic, you know, he you know, he signed some he signed some fun stuff for uh, for our friend Deef Dave. And he's like, hey, let's get a photo, Let's let's do this, and I was like, well, you know, and I even told him, I said, well, I said, yeah, well we gotta we'll do We'll do something with post. He's like, oh, well let's do something right here. You know, let's have some fun. And I was like absolutely, So you know, uh, you know, we you know, we we talked about the show a little bit. Uh you know, so hopefully, you know, fingers crossed, maybe we might have an opportunity to get him on and uh and talk with him. More on that later though, But again, whether you are wanting a book for your children, whether you're wanting a book for yourself, whether you're wanting a comic book, John McDaniels, absolutely awesome, Uh, opportunity to meet him and speak with him. Um, you know, he's really known for playing his his uh, the the evil roles the villain in like The Patriots or Star Trek, Discovery or of course Harry Potter. But his his personality. He is one of the most the friendliest. Um. He always has a smile. He's very talkative. It was really hard to get away from him. He just wanted to talk. Um. He's the exact opposite of what he plays on screen. But I asked him what he what he what was one of his favorites things to play. He says he loves playing villains. But I had him signed an autograph. I made a little bit of a mistake, you know. I had had wanted him to sign for Star Trek, and which was actually I found out that's it kind of made him perk up a little bit. Everybody was having him to signed Harry Potter.

53:00 And the fact that I walked up and mentioned Car Trek, I guess not to many people had mentioned that. So that's one of the things that got him talking. But I asked him as a captain when he signed my photo, and he looked at me and he said, I'm not a captain. I was the Emperor like, yeah, you're right. That was a mistake. I made a mistake I forgot, but he was just incredibly friendly. I loved meeting him, one of the nicest people of I've ever met out of all the conventions. So let's let's write. Let's write this. Uh, let's let's talk Motor City Comic Con. And one thing we didn't touch on really about conventions and especially the Movie City Comic Con is I'm also a comic collector and the dealers. They have some fantastic dealers for anything you want, no matter what's a type of fandom or genre you like, but for comics it's second to none here on this side of the country. I would definitely rate it. I'd rate it to ten. It's my favorite of the year. Dave. I know Motor City Comic Con will be back November, the weekend of November tenth. Are we do you recommend? You know, we've got this kind of trifecta motor City, Cincinnati and Columbus for Galaxy. Um, you know there there might be one there that you don't get to see someplace else. I'd say it's definitely worth the trip. Jeff, what about you because this is your first convention, motor City come Con last year, so last yeah, last year. Well, I remember I went just thinking that'd be fun to see some people dressed up in costumes, because again, we didn't really we didn't really touch on the whole cosplay thing, which is a huge aspect of the convention, your circuit, right, I mean there's actually there's I know, there's dedicated groups of people that go just to be there to repair costumes. You know.

56:01 The people put time and effort and creativity into creating their own homemade versions of of these these costumes, these suits, and I think it's amazing that there's people that are they're almost like a for lack of a better expression, like a field medic. They're they're they're just walking around with like backpacks full of safety pins, tape, paint, you know, whatever you need. So if your costume starts to tear fall apart, they're there to help you. And they're they're they're just doing you know, they're not paid to do that. They're just doing it for love of the con you know. And uh, and I get it. I totally get it, and uh and I love it. So yeah, um, I went, just like I said, to support some friends, have some fun. Uh, had some amazing connections last year at MotorCity, could not wait to come back. Uh, this one did not disappoint, and I'm already excited about going back in November because I've loved all of the ones that we've done so far. Um real quick too, for those listening, I know, Wayne, we haven't really talked a whole lot about the comic aspect of it, and I know Scott has touched on a little bit and Wayne's mentioned it. Um. Because these aren't just like you know, you're you're not gonna see like vendors just with like the this month's issue of The Amazing Spider Man. I mean, there are some high priced books at these uh these conventions. So if you're looking for like a very specific book, if you're looking for something to complete your collection, or if you're looking for like, hey, I've always wanted the first appearance of the Punisher in in you know, in Spider Man or or

With a lot of the conventions, especially like Cincinnati and Columbus, Uh, the most of the comic dealers are local dealers, you know, usually from within two hours maybe three hours away. Motor City Comic Con is one of the few conventions in this area that brings dealers from all over the country. And if you're looking for something specific, whether you get a toy or comic, that's the place to go to find it. Except for Shee Hall of course. They work really hard hours, really long hours to help all the celebrities help make the thing happen, everything from running water out to people to you know, helping to kind of um manage the money at the table. It's another way I would encourage if you ever have the chance, go ahead and volunteer for a show. Oftentimes it comes with a free ticket. You'll definitely work, but you're going to have fun time doing it because you get to be behind the scenes and you get to be connected to the experience, and for me, it gives you a chance to you know, work closely with the people that you admire and help them out for the day. And that's a special kind of experience that you can't get any other way. So if you have a chance, it's a great way to get to a show, and thank you volunteers. I mean, a squeakinger that I didn't realize never long Bottom is going to be there, right, Yeah, there's there's literally too many people to name. So again you get what you pay for. But even if you if you just want desperately, like if you want to go to since a comic expo with the intent that you have got to meet Indiana Jones's original nemesis, Paul Freeman, who played Belloc Belloc Belloc. If you just want one chance to meet him, you can buy a ticket for like twenty five bucks and you can go just for that one day, or you can, you know, if you want to be living the lavish life and you want to get the VIP experience. But yeah, by the by the package, jump the lines, do all that kind of crazy stuff. Again, there's something for everybody. But Dave, you know, how do you like if if if I live, you know, depending on where I live, how do I how what's the easiest way for me to find out if there's a con? Like do I do I just Google, like, you know, New Mexico comic Con or you know New Jersey like wherever I live and just put comic con, Like, what's what's the best way to try and

A great way to learn about the shows that coming near you go to a local comic shop, go to a local gaming store. If you want to know st people that are right yeah, House of Plastic. Go to the places where there's a lot of passion for these kind of things, right your pop culture mecca's even they're likely to have a lot of promotional materials that are let you know about what's coming up, and if not, ask somebody behind the desk.
