Disney's Haunted Mansion Review

My guests, I guess I could say ghost host David Burns Hope and the astral projection of Dayton Johnson from Docking Bay seventy seven podcast. Hello, Dayton, Greetings. We are going to have ourselves a spirited, spoiler free conversation about the latest retelling of theme park ride turned film Disney's Haunted Mansion. To rid a mansion of ghosts, you'll need a priest, queen, all the help.

Thirteen to get tickets now quite the collection of creepy and crazy characters, Dayton, let's talk about this, uh the celebrity cast? Sure, well, you know I remember we're hearing when they were making it and at first, my whole family is kind of like, I know they're gonna try this again. And then they started naming off people that we're going to be in it. You know, Owen Wilson, who has a long history with Disney through the Pixar movies in Cars, and then you add an Asokatano herself, Razario Dawson, and then Jamie Lee Curtis. You're kind of like, Okay, I have to see this now just because of the people that are going to be at it. So yeah, that was They were all really good, and they were all I think they're well used. You know. I liked uh I liked their choices. He knows who they who they picked for the roles, Dave, who's the who's the standout here? Well? I love the Keith Stanfield. I think he is good, great in everything he does, and I loved him in this. I thought he did a really good job.

2:22 Yeah, he brought a lot of emotion to a movie that I didn't expect that. Yep. I think this is clearly his movie. He steals the show throughout all three acts. In my opinion, I loved his performance, loved his character uh any any frightful performances, And I don't mean that in a good way. I don't think so. I you know, uh, I think even a little boy his name's eluding me at the moment. Yes, I think he did a really good job too. You know, love Jay Stillon in this. Yeah, I this was. When you're going to a movie like this, you don't necessarily expect um wrong performances. But I think they everybody did a pretty good job. I think the only thing if I was gonna say anything about you know, if I'm gonna be negative in any any regard for it, I would say I feel like Rosario Dawson, who I love, was critically underused. I mean maybe, I mean we we guys, we just we just wouldn't seen it. I feel like, am I wrong? Like I feel like she was only had like maybe ten lines of dialogue in the whole movie. He is underused. But again, this is this is ah Ben's story, like Keith Stanfield's. You know, it's about him, so they focus a lot on him. So that's why she kind of takes that backseat. Uh yeah, they probably could have used her a little bit more because Rosario Dawson is awesome, but um yeah, it wasn't really her story. All right. Well, Dayton, listen, I know you have been to Disney World more times than Walt, so I'm gonna hold off on you for a second. Jave. You and I went into this never having seen the other the other versions that Disney has put out.

3:53 We never rode the ride, so we went into this pretty fresh. Tell me you know your thoughts on the story. UM. I thought it was about what I expected it to be. Um, you know, it was entertaining. Um. I did get a little bored a couple of times, but yes I did. I caught myself closing my eyes a couple of times. Um, but it is exactly what I expected to be. And to to to correct you, Jeff, I have rode the ride. Um, I've never seen the other version of the film or anything like that, but I have written the ride and there are a lot of elements I fought thought were just like the ride. So if you've been to Disney, we're already been to Disneyland, and you you've written this, you're going to probably enjoy this movie. I think, having having no background on the film, I thought it was it was fun. It Uh, it had it had some some good jumps, you know, family friendly jumps. I would say, uh, we don't have time to get into whether, day whether Dave was closing his eyes because he was tired or just scared. But Dayton, I know you've seen everything on this on this movie, You've seen all the other versions. So uh, let's let's hear from you. Uh you know, how how the how the story do for you? So when it comes to okay, I thought that the ghosts they focused on, they did them well you know, um, but really in our house, it's our daughter that is the Haunted Mansion expert, and she was literally on the way home calling out stuff I missed completely. So there's a lot of things I caught

5:27 and a lot of things I enjoyed, different versions of you know, grim grinning ghosts that they did and things like that. But what I thought was really cool is that both Crupt Manner and the Haunted Mansion are nods to both the Disneyland version and the World version. So they did a good job doing that, and you know, it's what you expected. I kind of thought that there was a little bit more of a story than I was reading online, So I like that, you know, the whole Bend's storyline. I really enjoyed a little bit more depth to what I was acting to rereally surface. But no, they the only the only complaints I had was some of the ghosts they that they had in the movie. They didn't give names to which I recognize their names we're gonna they're supposed to be, but ultimately didn't matter, you know, like the UM there's just certain ones that are very prominent on the ride that have names that they weren't given names in the credits.

6:19 But they did a good job overall with UM making it feel like you were on the ride for sure. You know. There's definitely a lot of super nods to things like that in there, and I think they did a good job making it fun and making you feel like, you know, hey, I've been on the ride now, or at least I can pull things from that. Everything from the wallpaper to the gargoyles to just things like that are all ripped right from the ride. Speaking of ghosts, Dave, did you have a favorite and uh, keep it spoiler free obviously, but favorite ghost, Dave, Well, she's in the trailer, so it's it's the Bride. I loved. I loved that one absolutely of it. Dayton very scary moments with that one. Um, honestly, I think it was, well, they call him credit or Crump, but it's hat Box Hattie, hat Box Ghost, who is a great character. And they really did that ghost justice with how I looked and his voice and everything. Of course Jared Letto did a good job making him even scarier. But yeah, I thought they did a great job with Hattie for sure. Yeah. I had no idea Jared Letto was even in this until I'm sitting there watching the credits.

7:31 I'm like, Jared Letto, I was like, clearly he's one of the the Poltergeists. But I don't know. I thought the you know again, I don't have the background that you guys do with Disney World, Disneyland and Dayton with the other iterations. But I gotta say, you know, I got what I expected. I you know, I can understand why it's PG. Thirteen, which was surprising at first, but uh, you know, when you got a bride that's known for you know, lopping heads off and you know husbands, yes, yeah, killing all our husbands and some other adult themes, I can understand that. But I could see I could see you taking younger kids to this. Uh, Dayton, I know, I know your daughter's much older, but she's five or six. You still taking her to see something like this. The Hot and Mansion became one of her favorite rides very early on, like when she was seven and eight. It would become a guide. So there it is. Yeah, all right, Dave, your eyes are open right now. So I'm gonna go ahead and ask see it, stream it or skip it. I'm going to say stream it. I feel like this is something you catch on Disney Plus. So yeah, all right, Dayton. Okay, So I struggled with this a little bit. Honestly, if you're a big fan of the ride, then I think go see it because you'll be a lot of things that will are easier to notice on the big screen. The music was good, the sound was good. You know. I think it has some good images that work a little bit better on big screen. But I think in general, stream

9:01 it is probably a safe bet. I'm gonna be the odd man out here. I'm gonna say see it. Uh, guess what you went to the theater? You're heading to the theater. You're probably not gonna good tickets? Uh for Barbie because it's still exploding everywhere. Uh so you know what, don't go home, you know, check out, check out Disney's on a mansion. I I had fun with it. I thought it was I thought it was a pretty good one. So I'm gonna say, see it, have some fun. You know, everyone's going back to the movie theaters. We talked about that when we uh Dayton, we talked about that when we did Oppenheimer last week, and you know, I know I talked about it on on Barbie. It's just great seeing everyone back in the theaters having having a good time. So I say, see this one, You're not gonna You're not gonna, you know, be upset. So until next time.
