Spoiler-Free Review: Superman (2025)

I'm Jeff Johnson, joined by David Burns, Scott Hoffman, Amber Lewis, and Wayne Whited for the Film By podcast. We're going to give you a quick spoiler free review of the new Superman film. Is Superman Back?

1:30 Superman is definitely back? DC has a hit. Yeah, I absolutely think so. I mean, this is it's putting Marvel in a kind of a tight spot. I mean, they've they've got a lot to live up to. Yes, I I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this movie. I'm still processing, but I definitely want to see it again. So that's a good sign. I agree as well, I think it was a fantastic film and definitely a great start for the DC universe. So first question, Dave, I'll start with let's talk about then. Yeah, we gotta be spoiler free here, but briefly, how is the chemistry between Clark and Lewis?

2:10 It is fantastic. I didn't expect the chemistry that we got on screen between those two because I really didn't seen much until this movie, but yeah, it was dead on. Man. You believed the romance. You believe they care for one another, amber would you agree? Yeah, I thought that they really clicked together on the screen. There's a couple of scenes in particular that are just great, snappy dialogue, and I like where they are in their relationship at this point in the movie. Scott, in the history of cartoons, movies, TV, we've seen our fair share of good Lex Luthor performances and we've seen bad Lex Luthor performances.

2:56 Your thoughts on Nicholas Holton. I think it's a redefine performance. I think he's raising the bar for who the character can be. You can see that he's definitely building on prior Alex's but making it his own. So I think he knocks out. Of the park. Wayne. One concern for a lot of people was the idea that this movie was gonna be a little bit bloated with meta humans. No, it wasn't very bloated. They were there, but very integrated to the story. It's very important to know that this is the start of a DC universe, so we're seeing the beginning of the story that we got ahead. The costume, the look of the costume, we've seen it, we've been We've been critical of it for months and months, but to see it on an Imax screen, those vivid colors, well, I think he's moving pretty good in the suit.

3:45 What do you think? I'm Jerry's still out for me. I need to watch it again. But I did like the colors very much, and I like the new insignia. Dave. Your thoughts on the costume. You know, we talked about this for a while, Jeff, when we saw it for the first time, and we saw it on trailers and you know, and pictures, and we struggled with a little bit. But I'm telling you, I guess watching in trailers and stuff, I kind of got used to it because I lost looking at it throughout the film because it was so vibrant and so colorful that I liked it because corn sweet does has an incredible job as Superman that I believed it, and I was quite okay with the costume, Scott. I know we can't talk about surprises, of which there are several in this film, but let's talk. Let's talk about who stole the show? Like I'm gonna give you in my mind, there's there's two options. It's it's Guy Gardner or it's Crypto.

4:41 Crypto. I think Guy Gardner shines in this one. He's gonna suppress a lot of people. But Crypto is going to give this something. I think it. One of the strengths of this movie is it has such broad appeal and broad reach. So I think a lot of people are gonna connect with Crypto in a lot of different ways. Amber, how badly are you wanting to pet Crypto roll around on the floor with him? Oh my god, Crypto is all the things. He's the gooddest. Boy, He's the best boy. Right, Wayne, You have given us so many amazing commentaries on. On film scores. What do you think of this? Uh? This music, the film.

5:22 Score here, Like we're sitting we're heavily sampling John Williams. And that's a good thing, right it is. There's a there is a lot of use of John Williams's theme, which it should be, but John Murphy has put a lot of his own self. He's a great composer, and he has created an incredible score, integrating both Williams and his own themes perfectly together. Dave, I think the one hang up I have about the film is that it might be several days until we can see it again, because this is this doesn't come like we're what we're like, what three days away from uh a big, big opening day for it. Yeah, I'm dying go back and see this. How about you? I think when we were walking on a theater, I think I told you is I can't wait to see this again.

6:05 Yeah, guys, we will tell you right now. Sit tight, stay through the entire credit sequence. We got some fun stuff, Scott. I have to believe you know. We're gonna ask a question. See it, stream it or skip it? What do you got for us? See it? Amber? Oh, see it many times. You have to see it in theaters. Definitely see it, you know, fly to the theater as soon as possible. See it on the biggest screen available. You will not be disappointed. Superman is back and this is a great launching point for James Gunn's new DCU.

6:45 Would you agree, Dave, Absolutely it is. I cannot wait to see what he has in the future for us. Now, Dave, I know you and I are going to go back and see this on opening day. I'll tell you what. I'll buy the tickets and I'll buy the popcorn.
