We're taking a look at some of the iconic films of nineteen seventy six to share some history about the film's production, some underrated moments, and the words that matter. Today's episode will be our final entry in the nineteen seventy six series, and I am happy to invite one of my favorite guest hosts back to the show on loan from the show You Can't Be Serious Podcast, Mister Jason Colvin. What's up, Jeff? How you doing tonight? Man? Man, I am doing great. Speaking of great, you indeed just released an incredible episode. Will you tell our listeners a little bit about it? And so we did that and we went through and it's got you got rock, you got some great you know, you got rock, you got pop, you've got disco, you've got you know, classic stuff, and so there's a lot of music to go through right there. And we had just a great time doing it. But I'm you made my day because you were like, man, you solved a twenty year old mystery. Yeah, listen. I first off, it's a fantastic episode. It's one of those where I was I was jumping in and out to load my Spotify because as you guys are dropping your your your choices, I'm adding them to like a Shirley Says playlist that I'm creating. And I got so excited because there is a song I have been trying to figure out who who it was for at least twenty years. I heard it one time, I loved it, and then amazingly enough, I never heard it again on the radio.

2:34 And every time I would try to to to inquire about it, I would try and you know, I know, I knew it as the Saxophone song, right and everyone was like, I don't know what you're talking about. You're crazy, you know, Whisper, Yeah, exactly, and I'm like, no, it's not careless Whisper. But lo and behold you and D both choose you're number one, you happen to have the same number one song and find as soon as you queued up that little saxophone, I about ran off the road because after twenty something years, I finally knew I was about to hear who sings this song and what the song is. And I was finally able to add the song Baker Street to my playlist on Spotify.

Listen, we've dropped back to nineteen seventy six only so that we can blast forward to sometime in the twenty third century. Logan's Run is up next. Logan's Run created VG. It's based off the novel Logan's Run by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson right, directed by Michael Anderson, who's a pretty good director. And let's talk about this. So we're in the twenty third century, Jason, because right off the get go we get one of these great title cards. Sometime in the twenty third century, the survivors of war, overpopulation and pollution are living in

4:46 a great domed city, sealed away from the forgotten world outside. Here, in an ecologically balanced world, mankind lives only for pleasure, freed by the servo mechanisms which provide everything. There's just one catch. Life must end at thirty unless reborn. In the fiery ritual of Carousel, Man, I don't know about you. That all sounds fantastic until you get to that last tagline of there's just one catch. Right, and the novel was like twenty one right, yeah, a lot. You didn't have a much time in the novel. And that's just one of the things that really, you know, had this this film dragging its feet for quite a while because in nineteen sixty nine, MGM had Robert Redford lined up to play Logan. But they're struggling to get the script right, and the real concern is that they'll miss out on the current popularity of sci fi that was created by two thousand and one of Space Odyssey and Planet of the Apes that came out the year before in nineteen sixty eight, right, right, But yeah, I don't know about you, man, but when I was a kid watching this, my opinion was why you got to run? You know, you had thirty years, you had a good life, because old age except your old age, guys.

6:11 No, I look back down. I'm like, thirty, that's life hadn't even begun at thirty. Come on, I know, I know, you know. I'm glad we got to talk about this one because I had seen this, Like I honestly think the last time I saw this was like a Friday night at eleven o'clock on old public television like, you know, on a seventeen inch television with wow, a fuzzy signal, you know, that type of thing. It had been since really early in the eighties since I had seen this one, So to revisit was a lot of fun for me. Watching this. I'm startled by how much difference between there is between this movie and Star Wars, which comes out just just a year later, I mean less than a year even. It is amazing thing because let's I gotta be honest, I want to give credit where credits to Logan's Run is just visually stunning. Yeah, okay, and this is a perfect time for me to, you know, let me brag a little bit more. Let's let's let me get a little let me get a little technical here for you.

7:14 So, Logan's Run is the first film to use Dolby stereo on seventy millimeter film. Wow, and the subwoofers known as baby booms. They weren't included until the following year, when they were used by Star Wars and Close Encounters of the Third kind. So Wow, get in great sound, but that that earth shadowing boom that you didn't get in Logan's Run. It's just one year later. With two of the other greatest sci fi movies of all time, but I mean Logan's Run. It did get nominated for three Academy Awards Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, which it didn't win those two, but it does. I need your help here, So it wins won Academy Award for Special Achievement. Yes, what's going on there? Okay? So the Special Achievement Award is an Academy award given for an achievement that makes an exceptional contribution to motion picture for which it was created, but for which there is no annual award category. Okay, So, like the movie does something great, but there's no award for it. So they just like the placeholder is special special achievement. Then that's what it sounds like to me. So, like, this is really awesome. You did a great job here.

This was inaugurated in nineteen seventy two and has acted as an award for categories that don't exist, like visual effects and animation. There you go, oh, okay, okay. So because you know the Academy Awards, they change over the course of several decades. So basically this is kind of like Visual Awards, Best Visual Awards before visual words exist in there. Michael York in the title role Logan know, he's Logan five. You and I had just talked about the girl who plays Juliette in Romeo and Juliet. We covered Black Christmas, Bob Clark's Black Christmas, and Amanda Janek was a guest on the show right talking talking about Black Christmas starring Olivia Hussey. Yeah, and you and I had talked about our experience of watching that movie with our class in high school. Yes, you got the uncensored version that was popular among all the ways. But Michael York played Tibalt in that in Romeo and Juliet that version

10:01 of Roman way he was in the sixty eight version with the Hussy. Yes, holy cow, I had no idea there. I mean, he's timbalt. I love when one episode kind of kind of leads into the next episode unintentionally. That's that's fantastic. I love that man, right. The role was always intended for John Voight, And after he takes a look at the script, he goes, he passes. He says, this is too strange, this isn't for me. Uh huh. Could you imagine John Voight in nineteen seventy six running around you know this is? Yes, yes, I think so. I like Michael Yorke. I think his acting ability is great.

10:43 I wanted my logan to be a bit more heroic, right, Okay, I want him to be a little bit more taller, a little broader shoulder, a little tougher. So John Voyd kind of feels that guy, especially in nineteen seventy six. Okay, different different uh, different movie with with uh With Voight, I would think, yeah, a lot much more American. I think, you know, much more American. But maybe I don't know. I don't know if it's as fantastical like it feels like it's a little more real, something like John Voight. Interesting. So if you if you had your if you had your pick, you're sitting in the studio and you got you got, you got an eight x ten of York in front of you and a void. Grab John Voyd. I'm grabbing John Voight.

11:28 Yeah, okay, Well let's talk about uh grabbing Jenny Agator as Jessica six. Let's talk about grabbing Jenny a get her happy, happy belated birthday to uh miss Agator. She you told me the other day she just turned seventy one. Yes, that can't be right, man. She is gorgeous. She it's it's impossible to think, like in my mind, she's always Nurse Price. She's thirty years old. That's it. Yep, she's forever Nurse Price in an American were from London, Yes, yes, but I don't know what you know. When you revisit Logan's run, Jessica six definitely gives her. He gives Nurse Price a run for the money. In my book, you know, I well, I can't wait. I can't wait to talk about costumes because Jenny Agner's costume is something to behold in this movie.

12:16 I've got something on the costuming. I do want to get to that here in a little bit. But so here's one other thing I want to talk about, with the role of Jessica six. Yes, Jenny Agater, the runner up. She was not the first choice. She gets the role. She gets the role because she has amazing chemistry with Michael Yorke. But studios, first and foremost, they're looking at Lindsay Wagner, the Bionic Woman, the Bionic Woman. Yeah, and obviously she goes, you know, she doesn't get this job. She goes on to become the Bionic Woman the same year this movie is released, in nineteen seventy six. You know, she had been on The six Million Dollar Man in like a two part episode before this. Yeah, you know, yeah, she doesn't. She doesn't get Logan's run. She goes back to television. They're like, hey, we got we got a TV series for you, and what a TV series?

13:05 Oh yeah, yeah, and that's not that's not the first seventies TV star we're gonna be talking about here. Nope, I got I got. Let's let's let's move on to the next one. Because Farah Fawcett in a very very limited role here as Holly thirteen. Right, but what a stunner. Oh yeah, oh yeah, I said your text the other day it was, I mean, Jenny Agator greater than Farah Fawcet. And I did not standing alone on that one. No, you are not. You are not alone on that. The tail of the tape, I'm gonna, I'm I'm gonna, I'm gonna always back Genny Agator over Farah Fawcet. I listen, that's just how it is. Uh. I'll tell you who disagrees with this though, is Michael Yorke. So there is a fantastic audio commentary if you pick up the DVD or the Blu Ray version of Logan Down. So on the commentary track, Michael Yorke actually takes credit for discovering Farah Fawcett.

14:07 Really yeah, now, and he's playful. He's not. He's not, you know, he's not like stuck up about it. He's just he's being playful on it. But he's he basically he shares his story. He he claims he was playing tennis when he saw quote a blonde vision of delight. So he goes over, he you know, introduces himself. Then he goes back to the studio. He suggests her to the casting director. Casting director takes one look at her, says, she's got it. She's got the role. So wow. And here's what's here's what really gets weird. I mean, during production, she lands another role that basically turns her into a superstar, television superstar. Right, yep, she's this is when she gets Charlie's angels. Charlie's angels. Let's think about this for a second. We've got a a sci fi film that's in production. Lindsay Wagner's in the conversation, Farah Foster's in the conversation, and both these women have breakout superstardom on television the same year this movie comes out. That's that's incredible. I think I think they I think they got a big push off of this movie.

15:16 Now that right? Oh oh yeah, Well here's the question. Where's Linda Carter? Right? Oh wow? Oh man? Wait? Who you okay? So who you? Who? You talking Linda Carter? For which world? Holly thirteen or or or Jessica six. When it comes to Linda Carter, she can have whichever role she wants. She could be Logan, right, I don't care. But I think, I mean she could. She would have been amazing as Hollly thirteen, right, she would have been yeah, you know, and I love that little moment. Yeah, I love that little moment with Farah where she leans down, like you know her scene.

15:58 You know, she's basically at this futuristic plastic surgery office and Logan is getting his face changed, and you know, she kind of leans down, whispers in his ear. She's like, I like dark hair. Time to give you dark hair? Like yeah, yeah, men with men with dark hair Rejoice Nation with Parafocet says I like dark hair. But hey, I mean think about this. She was married at the time. She was married to Lee Majors. Yeah, so I think she's credited as Parafocet Majors when she does this. I think you know what, you're right she is. She is credited as uh As Fawcett Majors. By the way, I got a little tidbit for you on parafacet lay it on me. Okay, so we actually discovered this when we're doing our TV theme songs of the seventies.

16:48 Penny Marshall got her start in like a head and shoulders commercial, I know, like the the ugly roommate. Yeah, we talked. We talked about this. Uh, we actually talked about this also on our Penny Marshall episode for Awakenings. Yeah, okay, there you go. Yeah, share the story though, share the st Well, So Penny Marshall's like the ugly kind of you know, I say ugly, she's the homelier roommate that Yeah, she had the chair had like it's a homely, homely, homely girl. I think it's only girl. That's who she was, holy girl. That's just me and her her unfortunate pairing with the roommate. That's it's fair fawcet. It's fair faucet. Yeah, how about that. Yep, we have to talk about seventy superstardom as television stars. You know, seventy super There's there's a lot of seventies superstardom in this in this cast. I think, Yep, let's talk about a couple of people that maybe didn't experience superstardom.

17:47 Okay, so we can't. We can't not talk about Francis seven because he is the he's the villain of this of this movie. Uh, played by the very talented Richard Jordan. I got it. I got you know you you you said it a couple of weeks ago when we were talking about this, and I crack up think it laughing every time. We know Richard Jordan, but we only know him from one thing, Jason, what are we talking about. He's his uncle Howard. He's Brantley's uncle from Secret of My Success. This is the guy that's out to get Michael J. Fox in the Secret of My Success. And when you go back and you see the young version of Uncle Howard, you know, stalking people, tracking them down, shooting them or terminating their life forces as it were. Right, Yeah, Richard Jordan, the great Richard Jordan. I know he's I mean, you know he was in Rooster Cogburn, Yes, and I think he was in like some some really popular TV but I don't know. Yeah, I got something for you, Okay, So he was. He was the first actor I believe to play Dirk Pitt. You're kidding me. No, he plays the Clyde Custler, the Clisler character that Matthew McConaughey plays in Sahara.

19:00 He goes to Aarah. Yeah. Yeah, so he plays Dirk pit and raise the Titanic. I can't believe that. Yeah, I just always assumed that McConaughey was the first guy to go to the screen with that Richard Jordan. There you go. We have got to find raise the Titanic, because that's that's got to be. I think you can watch it on YouTube. It's really cool. It's it's fun, man, and it hits all those sort of Indiana Jones ish adventure type of things. Well, by the way, one more thing. Have you ever seen there's a movie from nineteen eighty five, I believe with Kurt Russell called The Mean Season. I've heard of The Mean Season, but I've never seen it. Man, I gotta tell you. It's just one of those HBO movies that really fascinated me. Kurt Russell is playing a newspaper reporter and he's got the serial killer, serial killer that's reaching out to him and telling him all the details about his killings.

20:00 It's gripping, man, and like Kurt Russell's trying to help the cops find this guy. And the killer is Richard Jordan. So uncle Howard the serial Killer, yeah means you. Okay, all right, So I've got two movies. I got two Richard Jordan movies to watch. Now, I'll tell you what. I gotta give you credit because you picked up on another famous face that I every time I've watched this movie, I've never even picked up on it, and it's probably because of the makeup involved. But can you tell me who's playing the old Man? So? The Old Man is played by Peter Ustinoff. Yes, okay, Now, this guy's been an actor for a long time, but you and I know him from some early eighties classics. Yes, and I can tell by the way he talked. I'm like, that is the dude in Great Muppet Caper who missus Piggy's trying to hitch a ride from uh so should get to the Mallory Gallery in time?

Uh that was a that was a mind blower when I saw that. Guys, for let's say about this for the brief time. He's in this movie, you know, and he's he's a little you know, he's a little battye right, Yes, he's been a hermit for the past what thirty forty years, he hasn't seen anybody. Yes, yeh, I got I got a credit. You know, he does he does unhinged, but in a fun way.

Remember you and I were talking about the original robin Hood the other day on our Fraser podcast. We were Yeah, because the guy who does the voice for robin Hood played Edward, the guy who was hitting on Marty and Fraser. Anyway, it's just kind of a story that we talked about there. Well. In robin Hood, the voice of Prince John is provided by Peter Ustinoff, the guy who is the old man from Logan's Run. Okay, so you've got to be kidding me, the old classic Disney animated Peter uh robin Hood. Yeah. So that's that's that's that's the second Disney's robin Hood connection you've created on a podcast, right, I can almost feel like there needs to be an episode. I don't even know how we'd covered or what it is, but there almost needs to be like a a Robin Hood. Uh you know Da Vinci Code episode we need to crack. I've got one more thing for you. I got to tell you. I'm Peter Stuff. I'm sorry, I'm taking up so much. You are the no you are the uston Off expert. What else you got? Okay, so early HBO, there was a movie called Charlie Chan The Curse of the Dragon Queen. Yes, and it had it was like Michelle Feiffer's one of her first roles.

Not only does he play Chan, who is one of the famous uh you know, mystery novel character. Yes, I see. I also know he played uh Herkule Parrot in several movies. I think he's even the Death of the Nile he was Hercule Proro. Yeah for sure. Man, How does somebody so white play somebody so Asian? I don't know that. Yeah, that's not happening today, I know. All right, Well, listen, we hope you're enjoying the the Peter Ustanov podcast. But we gotta we gotta talk about one last one, last amazing individual. This one blew my mind when I figured out who was behind, who was underneath the the armor, so to speak. But uh, we get one of cinema's creepiest robots.

But I don't know about you, man, but he he When I was a kid, he creeped me out even then, just the way he looked, the way he moved, the way he sounded, the way his mouth moves. Yeah, oh yeah, Uh we're talking about uh Roscoe Lee Brown who played who played the role of Box. And this kind of surprises me. This is a situation where they put this man in that costume and it's it's top Yeah, it's top heavy. So depending on how he moves, moves up, moves around the set, he could easily topple over.

You joined us for our limited series nineteen eighty six and we were covering Legal Eagles, which, of course, yeah, Rosco Brown. Yeah, he was the judge going up against Debwinger and Robert Redford. That's great, great nugget right there. Man. Yeah, he was busy, like yeah, we talked about Rosci Lee Brown twice at A six because it was Legal Eagles with you, it was Jumping Jack Flash. Yeah, that's right. Yeah, he's in Jumping Yeah, he's busy in eighty six, man, busy in seventy six, busy in eighty six. This guy was always working. I love this guy. That's cool. I know we got to take a quick break. But I feel kind of Jason, I kind of feel bad.

Yeah, oh called All the Fine Young Cannibals. Now, if you've ever heard the song she Drives Me Crazy by the Fine Young Campbells, Yeah, that's where they got their name from this movie. I absolutely dig the fact that you're bringing that Shirley the Sureley. You can't be serious stylings to this show because it's giving us a little bit of a street cred. It's giving us a little bit of it's giving us a little bit of class.

28:07 He's the costume designer on Logan's Run. Practically everyone on set, everyone on screen that you see is in red or green. If you look really close, you could see a little bit of yellow peppered in there. Uh huh. Do you know? Do you know? What? Do you do? You know anything about the colors? Do you know why we see those those specific colors? No? Tell me? So this is interesting and this is. This is from the book. They kind of adapted it from the book, but basically the colors of the clothing denote a person's age. So okay, So so at birth, you know, the beginning of it, we see we see Logan and Francis. They're in the nursery seeing seeing the next Logan be born. At birth, you got get the crystal in your palm, so you know, that's that's the cool thing that you know, when we talk sci fi, everyone in this civilization has this time, any little crystal on the palm of their hand, and it's a certain color. So at birth, your crystal is kind of clear and then turns yellow. So from birth to age twelve, you wear yellow clothing. And if you go back and watch this movie, you'll notice that everyone that's in yellow, they're kids basically. Okay, you don't see a lot of them walking around, but you know, because you know when they get a carousel. This isn't for children to watch, but yellow is for children. Age is zero to twelve, you turn twelve, and then from twelve to age twenty four, you wear green. Okay, so you know, like like Jessica six,

She's about to face out of green, obviously, because from twenty four to thirty that's when you wear red, and then when you turn thirty, your crystal starts glowing because that means you're up for renewal, your time's coming right right, And that's the whole that's the whole point of these the clothing where you see everyone's in red or green. Mostly that didn't it's their age, like, you know, here's the here's the the twelve to twenty four's, here's the twenty fours, the thirties. I love, there's there's there's a reason for the colors you got. You gotta say, like, you know, obviously, she has mentioned several times she was not a fan of her clothing. Who's that, Jenny agultor Jenny Jenny Agutter. Yeah, I mean, let's think about it, man. I mean, first off, everyone is moving around.

30:30 I guess they don't wear underwear in the future, nobody wears any under nobody. Yeah, these are very revealing. This is very revealing clothing. It's almost it's almost like a futuristic like it. It reminds me of kind of like the Roman era, like with the togas, how like fabrics were just kind of draped across people. This is kind of like the life in the twenty third century. Yeah, I think that there. I think their costumes adds to the fact they're very youthful and everybody's a track active and young and vibrant, you know, and I mean, heck, nobody's wearing any underwear, and it's just it's a very youthful, party like feel to it.

It all goes back to that that opening title screen you see where at this point in society, we are living for pleasure, right, you don't have to worry about anything, so just have a good time. I love the fact. Let's talk about the circuit for a quick second. Okay, this blows my mind when you go back and watch this now it's online dating and it was created in nineteen seventy six. Yeah, that's you kind of right about that. Yeah yeah, yeah, So Logan he's a sandman, you know. He right, they're basically they're like the military, right, they're the police force. You know. Well, he goes home, he wants to relax, and he wants some companionship. Right. So he gets on the circuit, which basically it's almost like a teleportation device, and he's you know, he's just like skimming the channels, right, And we gotta we gotta talk about the fact that Logan's run kind of acknowledges the sexual revolution of the sixties and seventies with this scene, and you know, and the casual acceptance of homosexuality, because the first option he gets is this really handsome guy. He smiles. Logan smiles back, but shakes his head in disapproval, and the guy's like, all right, I'll you know, see you next time.

32:25 You know. He keeps surf he keeps surfing the of the circuit and here comes Jessica and he's quick. They're like, hey, let's let you know. The second that he realizes she doesn't want to jump in bed, the first thing he does is like, oh, do you prefer women? You know, this is very progressive type of scene. Yeah, very progressive. This is nineteen seventy six and the movie studios were not so free about, uh, talking about this kind of stuff. So I think that's one of the things. Yeah, that's one of the things I think when you go back in cinema and you kind of see like where did where do our acceptance for beliefs and things start to start to take place. You got to give Logan's Run credit for being open about it and being accepting of it. I think, Yeah, I think you're right, and it does seem very modern, especially for a movie that's nearly fifty years old. To online order an escort of your choice, you know exactly. I'll tell you what doesn't feel very modern when you watch this now. I mean, don't get me wrong, it looks cool. Yeah, but we got we got to talk about the setting, right. I think you told me, like, we're talking about this a couple weeks ago, and you're like, Okay, so we're in a shopping mall, Jason, what can you tell us about the locations that they Yeah? So I text you the other day. I'm like, Okay, clearly we're in a mall, right, no doubt about it.

33:53 You can see the escalators, you can see the storefronts. Well, come to find out that is all in Dallas, Texas, right, And I'm pretty relatively close to Dallas. Yeah, And I texted you, man, I'm like, Mann, I gotta get down to this place so I can check this out. It's actually called the World Trade Center Mall, which is kind of a you know, strange but strange name. Right. It's actually not open to the public anymore, which is kind of a bummer. I it's some sort of I don't know what they use it for now, but it used to be just this giant mall in Dallas. So that's that's that's wild. Is this Is this the only place in Dallas that they're filming. No, so there's a couple of other places. I think there's a place called Dallas Dallas Market Center, which serves as the outside of the Great Hall Building. Okay, you know where they're coming out there. They're kind of walking outside on the stairs and stuff, and they're talking, which actually their hair is blowing, which is kind of funny for a dome city. That's a dome city. You know, they must have good central air, I guess right. And so that building you can just right walk right up to it. So I'm like, I need to get down there to check it out. But the main place that I want to go is do you remember at the end when they have to when uh Jessica six and Logan five they have to dive into that pool to kind of re enter the city or the dome city. Yeah, you know what we're talking about. Yeah, yeah, he makes that that that really he makes that Tom Cruise legend dive.

35:20 That's it. Yeah, Well that is just a like this kind of cool fountain area in downtown Fort Worth. You're and you're this closed to all these locations. I am just a mere three hours away from all these locations. So we need we need, we need Jason covin on on a location scout. We need to we need to see some of these like you know you did it. You did that. I know you've done that before with the Outsiders and uh and Rubblefish. You gotta you gotta give us some some information, man, we gotta we gotta see some like here's what it looks like in the movie. And here's where I'm at today. Dude, I'm gonna I'm gonna go down. I'll give you some Logan's Run stuff. I'll give you some Row of Coops stuff. It's be great looking forward to that.

36:06 I hate to do this because you know, I never want to make you unhappy, but I got I got something about this movie that I think is gonna make you unhappy. Okay, tell me now, let's think about this. I think it's fair to say that Ginny Agator is h We see a lot of Geni Agator and most of nearly everything. Yeah, but and this is a PG rated film that's shocked now by the way, it's shocking. But here's the thing. Several scenes had to be cut to secure the PG rating. U huh, so you know, and you know this. I think a lot of our listeners already know this. But we wouldn't have the PG thirteen rating until nineteen eighty four when when Red Dawn gets it right.

36:52 So they had to make some cuts. Otherwise this would have been a rated R film. So there's a scene at the arcade that was cut because it depicted uh, lucinatory drug use. And sadly, a much longer scene in the ice cave was cut due to the extensive nudity of Geniagutor. Uh remember that creepy you know, remember Box the Android. He he has all those all those people frozen, those runners were frozen along the wall. Yes, so you know, and this is all lost. This film is gone, like we're never going to see it now. It's it's it's lost time. It does not send anymore. Yeah. But uh, basically, Box, the Box, the Android, the the trick he has to get these people is he he wants to create ice sculptures. So in the original cut, when when Logan and and Jessica are still kind of covering themselves with the the the furs, you know that the bear skin, Yeah, they're they're you know, they're they're they were freezing. They were soaking wet, so they stripped off their clothing. They they're trying to warm up. Box basically asks them to pose like holding each other so he can create a nice sculpture.

38:07 And that's when he's supposed to like shoot that, you know. You know he had that weird like mister freeze gun that he was trying to shoot at him. Yeah, yeah, that's that's when he's supposed to shoot him, you know. But they basically were like, Hey, I don't think this is gonna work. You know, we're seeing we're seeing way too much of Ginny aigitor. So so I texted you. I texted you the other day as I was watching this. Of course I hadn't seen it, Like the last time I had seen it was on television. But I could not believe how much nudity was in this movie. And not only just nudity, but like when they're going through the love shop. Yeah it oh who feels nearly pornographic even though you don't really see a whole lot. They they did a great job of blocking that scene to where you know you're looking at something but because someone's shoulder is right there or someone's you know, bag, yeah play yeah, they it's you know we we we mentioned uh York and Austin Powers and like that. You know, they that movie's famous for doing that.

39:09 At the end, you know this one, you're kind of like you slow down and you go, WHOA what am I seeing there in the background? You know, but you know you had they had to be careful, and you know, between that scene the love shop and and Jenny running around, this is a pretty amazing not as as close to an arc as you can get and still say PG in nineteen seventy six. So yeah, and with my parents as long as I said PG that that was like a full green light And this would be one of those where I'd be like, well, PG, can I go see it? Yeah? It's funny, like you know that that's a that's an era in movies that will never happen again.

40:54 Anything come to mind for you in Logan's run like an ununderrated moment, underrated scene. I don't even know if I can call it underrated because it's so important to the movie. But the scene when Logan goes to get a new face, okay, good and so he you know it, it's so tense, right, and you know that this you know this this doctor is you know, kind of working for the other guys, and and he's getting ready to be lasered up and and you don't really know what's going to happen. It really is a tense scene. I don't want to tell everybody what's happening. And then of course you end up with fair Face and Jenny Agutter wrestling, you know, so you got lasers going everywhere, and it's just it's just a great scene. I that's one I wanted to bring intention to.

41:40 I love it. That is a great moment. Uh yeah, I drop two nuggets on you about that scene. Yeah. Yeah. So first off, guy plays a doctor, that creepy doctor. Yes, that's the director's son. Really, yeah, he's got hey yeah, don't don't bother look up as his filmography because it's this interesting. Okay, that's a good night. Yeah yeah. And then when you go when you went back and watched this, did this does this feel familiar when you were watching this this scene in question, did you were you watching it? Going, Hey, I kind of feel like I've seen this before. I mean, yeah, maybe a little more recently. Watch this scene, because if you go back to Pierce Brosnan's Die Another Day, they took a lot of inspiration for that torture scene and Die Another Day where he strapped down. Think about it, think about those two moments. It's wow, someone was someone popped in Logan's run to say, how we're gonna block this scene with Bond. Hold on, let's let's take a look at Logan's run and another y that's great.

42:50 Yeah, very similar, Yes, a very similar situation. I think when I when I think outerrated moments. One, you know this movie, this is a sci fi action film, so it's it's it's very tense. It's you're always you are literally on the run with these characters. One moment that I really appreciate is the first instance where they get outside the Dome city and they see the sun for the first time. What is it? I don't whatever it is, it's floor. Yeah, I think that's such a beautiful moment. You know Jessica six, she's like just awe struck and She's like, what is that and and he says, I don't know, but it's warm. Yeah, And it's such a beautiful moment because, like they think about this, if you've lived your entire life inside a dome city, you've never you don't know what the sun is, you don't know what the planets are. This is their first chance to see the outside world. And that that first son that they see, that first setting sun that they see, I think, I think it's just a beautiful moment. I love that moment.

So you know, on nineteen seventy six we always talk about, you know, our favorite lines, memorable lines, you know, are they still relevant today? You know? In nineteen seventy six is littered with some classic, some amazing quotes. You know. We were just like the last episode we were talking. I was talking with Andy Tom. We're doing Taxi Driver, and everyone knows, you know, even if you haven't seen Taxi Driver, you know the line are you talking to me? Right? Right? Right? For everything that this movie gives us, I feel like it doesn't give us great quotes. There's no there's no catchphrase, well there are. There are not a lot of great lines in this movie. There's nothing really that stands out. There's not a are you talking to me? But the scene where where he's you know, basically been given his mission by the computer, like you are going to go find sanctuary, okay, yeah, and she deducts years from his from his crystal yes. Yeah, and he's like, wait, I just lost my four years. I'm getting my four years back, right, Peter, Silent. I'm getting my four years back, Silent. And so to me, that was really really a tense scene and impactful. That is such a great moment. I didn't even think about that one. I gotta I got a tidbit about the computer though, for you, now that we're talking about

45:36 it, Yeah, okay, talking about you now that we're talking about your scene. Initially, the computer's voice was a very male, robotic voice, okay. And they made a conscious decision, like in production they're like this doesn't feel right. You know, Logan and Francis and all these all these sandmen who were respondsible for keeping order in the city and you know taking you know, if people try to run, they take them out right, right, so the idea that they're going to take direction from another male, they didn't feel that that that really worked. And they thought these guys with with the the power that they have, the only person that's gonna really get through to them is a seductive female voice that's more like a that's you know.

46:28 The idea was like, it's there are the computers offering suggestion, and then the samon like, yeah, absolutely, that's that's what I'm gonna do. So there's actually one of the one of the characters, one of the one of the one of the actresses that's in the movie. You see Francis actually uh you know, Uncle Howard actually kills her. Yeah, okay, and they brought her back. I apologize because I don't remember her name off the top of my head. But she's the voice of the computer. They said, hey, would you do the the voice work for our computer. The actress actually has two. It's in the movie because she plays the runner and then she plays she plays the computer's voice. That's good. That's really that's a great nugget. I'm wondering if it's that one who is wearing the red that logan kind of helps I think, so I think that's how the blows her away, blows her out of it. Yeah, I think that's her.

47:17 Okay. I feel like if I'm taking orders from a superior and it has to be a computer, h give me, give me the give me the soothing female voice, I'll feel better about doing my job. Right, Yeah, totally. You know Carpenter Mousta felt that way because he had was it Jimmie Lee Curtis doing the computer's voice and Escape from New York so uh yeah, and he had Adrian Barbo doing it and the thing there it is the way of the future, soothing, seductive female voices telling us what to do. That's right, Jason. We got to talk prequel, sequel, remake. Yes, let me lay let me lay something out for you here. Okay. So I don't know if you know this. There was a TV spin off that aired on CBS from September nineteen seventy seven to February nineteen seventy eight. And this is perfect because we we just mentioned John Carpenter.

48:13 Donald Moffatt played an android on the show who was like a guide for Logan and Jessica. Donald Moffatt office obviously from the thing has great, that great moment. You know, if you guys don't mind, I don't want to spend the rest of this. Yeah. Wow, sadly not know that, Yeah, sadly. In nineteen seventy seven, Android's on television, played by Donald boffittt looked exactly like Donald Boffett. He's just Donald Moffatt in like a jumpsuit. So yeah, it was canceled after fourteen episodes, with the reason for the cancelation being quote, hey, we didn't have Star Wars money, eh, there you go. Yeah, I mean, you know, this comes out in seventy six. Star Wars hits the screens on seventy seven and everyone, you know, industrial light magic blow the doors off everyone's expectations.

49:15 So when you're watching Star Wars and you see the laser guns kicked back, you have the cool sound, and you have the instant effect on the wall or whatever. This it's like they're like pop guns. You know, it's like fizzle. Yeah, you know your wire over there? You know slow motion? Yeah, York was he said that. York on the on the commentary track says he mentioned that they're kind of gas powered, and he said they would do the motion, they would pull the trigger and aim, and then they'd be like a delayed reaction. And that's when you watch the movie. They're like they're very animated, like shooting, and then like a like a second later, it kind of fizzles and pops out and just looks.

Joel Silver and Warner Brothers attempted to remake Logan's Run in nineteen ninety seven with Leonardo DiCaprio. That would have been that would be my money, Take my money, please, DiCaprio in ninety seven, this is like a this is like what a year after he does Romeo and Juliet. I mean he is age appropriate, he's a superstar. I mean ninety seven, that's Titanic Leo. You know that's Titanic Leo. How I don't know. If you're Warner Brothers, you've got to be kicking yourself, like, how did you miss that opportunity? You know? Brian Singer went into development on a remake in two thousand and four. It failed. A lot of people, A lot of directors have been attached saying, hey, I want to remake Logan's Run in twenty fifteen, Hollywood's bright idea was to make Logan a female character, because you know that we had the success, We had all those female driven movies like Hunger Games and Divergent, Right, so they thought, well, hey, what if Logan's a girl? Right? No one's got it right yet, So let me ask you. Let me see if Jason Colvin gets it right. Your pitch to the studio. What are you gonna do with Logan's Run? Are you gonna do a prequel, a sequel, or a remake? Okay, Jeff, I don't say this lightly, but this is a movie that is right for remake. I'm not I disagree with you. It's an excellent story. You need to update the effects,

This would be a box office hit, in my opinion, if they would hire the right people, do the right you know, spend the money and make it right. So here's what I've got. Okay, When I did my Google search for actors under thirty, okay, it's a bunch of pretty boys and I just couldn't really find So I had to expand my search to actors under forty, which is not that big of a reach because Michael Yorke was over thirty when they cast him in this movie. Yeah, and she was thirty thirty two, thirty four, right, thirty three or four? I think so. So I want Steven Ammel, the guy who plays all of her from Arrow. Yeah, as logans, I want my guy a little tougher. I want my Sandman to be a little edgier. Okay, Okay, Jessica's six, I'm going after Millie Bobby Brown. That's perfect casting.

Well, let's take your cast, let's remake Logan's Run, and then let's immediately move into let's get someone like Peter Jackson who can handle, you know, shooting a trilogy back to back. Let's do the Logan's Run trilogy. Make it happen. I love it, man. So is Peter Jackson your pick for director? Yeah, it's gotta be someone like Jackson because I know we didn't even talk about this. And apologies to a film buys Wayne whiteed because he loves Jerry Goldsmith. But think about Jerry Goldsmith's score where every scene where we're inside the Dome city his his his music's very electronic. There's a lot of keyboards, you know, it's very experimental, and then once we get outside to the world outside, very sweeping, very powerful, very orchestral. I don't know if you picked up on that, but I didn't notice that, But now that you mentioned that, I can kind of feel that. Yeah. Yeah, So when you think of Jerry Goldsmith's score for this, you got to think, who's a director that could handle a bad giving us the entire world, you know, inside and out, And Peter Jackson would definitely be my choice for this. I love it. I think you're right. I mean, he has proven time and

So yeah, well, let me ask you this as we wrap it up here, Jason, out of four possible stars, what would you give Logan's run Out of four possible stars, I'm gonna give this one three and a quarter stars. Okay, I like it. I really like the imaginative thinking of this movie. I like the the idea behind it. The whole plot is captivating to me. The execution, even though it was in seventy six, is a little bit off. I think they the special effects are noticeably poor in this movie, but I in some instances, you know, in some parts, they do really well.

56:55 And the setting's great. I love the actors. Of course, I'm in love with Jenny Agutor. I mean, she's just amazing. So three point two to five I think it could be done better. I think it with the right person, it would be an amazing film that needs to be remade. I'm with you, man, three and a quarter stars that you gotta get that extra quarter just for Genny Agutter. The more we've talked about it more, I'm like, yeah, you know, we keep talking to it. It's like, yeah, this is a four star movie. I'll challenge a little bit, like I feel like this is groundbreaking visuals for its era, and we got to remember this. This got a Special Academy Award.

I will tell you this. I watched it on TB. Yeah, and when they were all going, all the people were going to Carousel. M you could see the wires. Well, that's fair. You know when you watch this on t B and I know it's available right now, So if you want to watch this, you know you don't want to buy a copy of it. You should buy a copy of it because it looks great the Blue Jason, the Blu ray looks great. And that sen you're talking about Carousel with the you know where they didn't really have the ability to hide though some of the wires track then looks a little. It looks a lot better on Blu ray. But you know, if you're watching a free copy on two, you get what you get and you don't tell a fit, right, That's right, that's right.
