Am I right? Yeah, yeah you are? Yeah, yeah. We almost had this last year when we covered g I Joe the mass Device. But uh, I believe Dave had tickets to Cold slyther O the night we were recorded. Yeah, right, good good concert there, right, Dave. Oh, it's perfect. Absolutely, I had a great time that night. I bet you did.

Well, Jeff, clearly that means we just have to have you on That's all I'm hearing. Oh, guys, I love what you do on Phasers at the stunt. I would love to join you at some point. Uh. And and hats off to you guys. Awesome episode covered first contact with with Chuck Bryan. I thought that was a great, great thing. You guys did so trying. He was a great guest. Yeah, yeah, we'll have We'll definitely have to have Chuck back. I I did mention a certain film composer, uh to Chuck, and he said he would absolutely be ready to return and discuss that that gentleman's work. So we will, we'll we'll talk to Chuck. But uh, little background again. I gotta, I gotta, I gotta call it. Jason Copy here one of our listeners who last year had given us some feedback on I believe it was the our nineteen eighty six series episode for the Transformers, and this guy was like, Hey, what about what about Joe. Let's let's let's talk GI Joe.

3:19 And it just so happened that last year was the fortieth anniversary of the of the very first mini series GI Joe The Mass Device coming up on a year later, and I started thinking, man, it would be great to talk about uh g I Joe again, and lo and behold today, guys, This day, today, September tenth, is the fortieth anniversary of the second mini series GI Joe, The Revenge of Cobra. So happy anniversary, Happy anniversary. Oh it makes me feel old, That's what I believe. I have like this rat tattoo moment of just like zooming back into like Johnny's toys and like looking at the isle of Joe Figures.

4:03 When the aisles were magnificent, it was like it was like a work of art looking down those aisles. Man. Yeah, and then the day you'd walk in and the new wave was up and all these Brandywaveries. We didn't know what was coming up. Oh it was. That was fantastic. Yep. I have to ask you, guys, did you guys have the same situation where it's like October November, you're in the you're in the store, and you're going down these these aisles which were just heaven for guys like us, and then your mom and dad like it, like they went they they transitioned from the we'll see put it back, well, we'll see we went we went away from that to the well go ahead and look, uh and and you'll you'll let Sannah know, oh, because Christmas is coming up, and like you basically spent your entire like you know, Mom's doing her grocery shopping and you're just sitting in this aisle just making your your your your checklist. Oh yeah for Christmas? Right? Was that was that the same?

5:04 Oh? Yeah, exactly the same. I distinctly remember being at Kmart with my mom a lot of times and seeing you know, the latest vehicle or maybe a couple of figures or whatever, and she would always scroll them away and lay away and we'd have to go back to a regular basis. Yeah, I got most of my Joes and Christmas too, But I do remember going there. We used to have a store called Hex and Van Work, and I remember walking in there and the new wave was at the second wave and Mom actually said, yes, you can buy one. I bought snow Job and you know it's it's weird too. I remember exactly how much it costs you.

5:44 Ninety nine, Yeah, two dollars and nine cents. What's the average action figure, Dave, I'm looking at you here, what's the average action figure go for? And I'm not talking about like the the hot toys, no, because I've seen I've seen you salivated these things at cons where they're like seven seven hundred dollars, but like your standard issue action figure, like. Like twenty five dollars, Now. No, are you kidding? Like it? Yeah? For the Yeah, yeah, so that's outrageous. Although that's that that's for the Joe reissues, yeah, right, like on the like on the nostalgic cards and the nostalgic size and all this other kind of stuff. Well, they're doing a new like there are a lot of these runs are doing retro lines now and I know, g I Joe did it to Transformers in it for a while and then right now Superpowers is doing it and they're they run between like ten to twenty bucks.

6:38 Yeah yeah, Scott. You you have three sons, How how can you afford to keep a roof over their head and supply them with the latest batch of Joe and Cobra figures at these prices. That's outrageous to me, man, I can't. I can't believe it. I just can't. So nerds like me hang on to them and pass them down. But as far as like the new stuff on the aisles, there's a big difference between prices for retro collectible kind of things and things that kids are actually going to play with. So you really like the lego kind of domain and things like that, where they're at playable prices, not magers. You don't have to worry about that though, because I mean, there's nothing in the toy istles anymore. You can't find yours, you know, you save it a lot of money just by not finding it.

7:27 That's true. Well, let's talk about where we where we found the Revenge of Cobra because I own the entire collection on on DVD. Met okay, Scott, you're not shaking. You're not giving us a yojoe on on owning everything. It's a no go. I saw this on the official G I Joe channel on YouTube? What do you mean the official GJO channel? When I when I when I looked it up on YouTube, there's it looks like there's a channel dedicated to G I Joe cartoons, which I ask, Oh, that's fantastic. Hopefully hopefully they're not. You know, so this wasn't like. Someone was This wasn't like someone was like videotaping their television and you're watching like a rummy bootleg.

8:10 No, it's pretty that's pretty crisp. But it has all the commercial breaks where it does the you know, logo now back to G I Joe and a lot of the kind of stuff. Oh that's fantastic, all right. Good. I felt it odd too that, you know, uh to B TV has all the episodes, but they don't have the mini series, and I thought that was really odd. I had to go to YouTube to find it. Here's the thing about to be because we know we love to be on this on this show, we always are shouting out to be for the longest time. They had the first and second mini series, and then they didn't have the cartoon. Then they had the cartoons, but they didn't have the mini series, and then recently, Wayne, you're correct, they've got the mass Device and they've got seasons one and two of the G I. Joe cartoon, but they don't have the Revenge of Cobra. So my only guess is that, you know, again, it's the fortieth in aniversary, so maybe maybe there's something going on, you know, with with Hasbro, or maybe they're doing something could bay, I don't know. For those of us that need a need a reminder, you know, before we we tune into the official YouTube channel or dust off our DVDs, can you let us know give us a quick breakdown of what the Revenge of Cobra is all about.

9:28 G I. Joe is transporting a laser core, which turns out to be the final piece. Destro and Cobra needs to complete their Weather Dominator, a device that controls the weather around the world. After the loss of the core, g I Joe battles Cobra again and manages to explode the weather Dominator into three pieces that scattered. Around the world. It becomes a race for both sides to track down and capture these pieces before the other. Cobra wants to rule the world and g I Joe is doing everything it can to stop them. In this five part mini series, Revenge of Cobra. Wayne, it sounds very reminiscent of the Mass Device. Yes it does. It follows almost identical storylines.

10:11 Beat for beat, Right, we got yep, we got a mcguffin that's gonna determine who rules the world, and it's going to explode into three parts, and then we're gonna have to break up into teams and. Different parts of the world. Yes and yeah, different parts of the world. Yeah. And I love the I love some of the parts of the world that we're going to in these mini series. We'll probably get into that a little bit later. Want to point out, Scott, we were talking off Mike and you had the question, like, did this just all drop on one night? Was this Saturday morning? Was this? What was this? It turns out this was released over a five day period from September tenth to the fourteenth in nineteen eighty four, So they were doing like a daily like you know you mentioned, Scott, you mentioned last last year when we talked about the Mass Device, these great lift hanger endings they were doing. So yeah, uh in eighty four we were watching this uh yeah, one episode a night and then you had to remember to tune in.

11:11 That sounds like Wayne, amazing block Wayne you. You I mean? I remember you had a vivid memory about the Mass Device. Is it the same for uh? I remember this. I remember this. I lived in northern Ohio and uh, in the mornings around seven thirty eight o'clock, there'd be a show called Froggies Pad that would chow cartoons and had a little puppet frog and it would always talk like, hey, how are you doing? You know? But and that's how you saw it. Of course, I had to go to school before the thing was over with some mom always had to tape these and I remember very clearly Monday through Friday watching the episodes, and then I also remember that the following week, like that, the next Monday is when Transformers started the first episode of that series, and that you have just continued recording after that.

11:58 So did these drop in that kind of after school slot around like four o'clock, four thirty when you came home or was it evening? No, it was in the morning. It was before school morning. Yeah, it was like seven thirty. The show aired from like seven thirty to nine o'clock. They played like three cartoons, but it was in that block and then I had to watch it off of a videotape. Interesting, yeah, but I think that was up to the channel. The channel could play it any anytime. They just chose to play it during Froggy's Pad. For some reason. I remember a lot of these dropping in the afternoon and having to, you know, run home from school to catch the cartoons. I might be thinking at different ones, but. No, I think you're right. We talked about this. We talked about this with the mass device where it was all it was all to the affiliates because we all grew up in different parts of Ohio, and you know, we talked about how some of us were watching this on Saturday morning, some of us were watching it before school in the morning, and some of us were watching it after school.

12:55 And then the next year, following year, it's when the third mini series came out. They moved it in my area to after school and it aired. I think it was four o'clock. It was either four four thirty. I remember a mixed bag. I remember some of these watching in the morning before school, and then some of them I watched after school, like I can remember like ThunderCats before school, but then sometimes I watched thunder Cats after school. I don't remember exactly, but it seems like they were at both times. Well, and I feel like prime time to show them would have been afternoons because the kid is gonna maybe think about what they watched in the morning through school, but right after school waiting for you know, parents to get home, that's when you ask them to drive you to whatever store.

13:37 Yeah, you're right, Scott too. And I think they realized that, and that's why all the the higher profile cartoons like these and like Gym and you know Heman, we're all moved to the afternoon. I also remember that they used to play g I. Joe and Transformers on The Bozo Show. I don't know if you guys had that in your area. That was like a national thing, but they used to play it on there as well and that was in the mornings. Yeah, a couple couple names to uh to a call here uh. This mini series once again written by Ron Friedman. As a reminder, Ron Friedman gets the job because he is not a cartoon television writer. He is a television writer.

14:23 And during his interview he's he's actually, he's, uh, there's some good behind the scenes stuff if you if you have the physical media, where he's like, hey, I wrote television. I didn't write cartoons, and I got the job because I wrote the card. Yeah, he wrote the roll, he wrote the bulk of the series. Then he went, he went. He wrote a lot, but he wrote a lot on like dozens and dozens of other TV shows from the sixties and seventies. I see his name pop up all the time if you're watching classic TV. I remember seeing his name on like Bewitched and All in the Family and Dukes of Hazzard and all those shows like that. Yeah, this is the guy who was giving a little bit of a personality to some of the Joe's especially with the voice acting like he he uh. There's a great interview with him where he's talking about first time he looked at shipwreck and he saw Jack Nicholson, so he he said, hey, he's got a sound like Jack Nicholson, you know, yeah, And I looked at I thought about that for a seconds, like holy wow, Yeah, Shipwreck. Yeah, it is speaking like Jack Nicholson. That's that's amazing. Scott another guy behind the scenes, I know you love him.

15:35 H credited with a lot of the design work on this one. Bruce tim Is back, yeah on the project. Yeah, And I mean when you talk about people that are gonna help turn cartoons around to not be what people think of as cartoons, right that it's not zany anvils and there's anything wrong with that, but taking the writing a little bit seriously in terms of giving these characters depth. You can that a lot in these kind of shows. And then of course we got to talk about the creative director Jaybacall, who famously gave us the name the Transformers. And know if you guys knew that he he was brought in initially, he was brought in uh marketing and developing, when Hasbro was like, hey, we bought these two toys, these two toys we were going to do like our own thing, and we need to give a name to them.

16:29 Jaba Call is the one that that that says, let's call them the transformers because they transform into things pretty simple stuff sometimes. But yeah, yeah, jabacall So we've we've got we've got all the talent collected once again, we've got all these amazing voice actors and guys. When you think about cartoon voice acting, a couple couple of shows come to mind immediately, like X Men ninety seven, Uh, Batman the animated series. I feel like G I. Joe has to be that's that's a top three voice acting group, right. Yeah, yeah, for sure. Yeah, you've got voice acting royalty on there, right, Frank Welker, Michael Bell, who we talked about in our first Phasers episode because he was a comer at far point right and one of my favorites.

17:24 Rob Paulson voice of Pinky of Pinky in the Brain, and Raphael I think on TMNT. But just people who've just run the gamut on voice acting. Absolutely. I do want to talk a little bit before, you know, I don't want to make this just a G I. Joe conversation overall, but I do want to say one more thing about the mass device. Just let's go around the horn here, real quick shooting from the hip. Is the Revenge of Cobra better than the Mass Device? Scott Yes, Yes, Yes, for Zartane and Dreadnoughts alone. Okay, Dave, No, No, I was I was lacking my Snake Eyes in this series, which I understand they have to give him put somebody in the background because we have so many new characters. But what they do with Snake Eyes in the Mass Device, I liked it better than they did this one.

18:21 That's a good point because Snake Eyes he is, he's basically binged. Him and Duke both are benched for this entire series. I feel like Wayne your thoughts. No, I don't think it is either, just because this really felt to me like a toy commercial. I know it is, but I mean it really is. They were. They were pushing everything into it and giving it. Sure, all the new toys were given their their go tos, and and they even had those dumb pack rats. I hated those things. Those are the toys that you know, moms bought you because you know they were cheap, and no kid really wanted those things, you know. But you know, I've always been partial to the original twelve and they are kind of thrown back into into the background in this mini series. And that is really the reason why I say that that this is not better than the other one.

19:11 Wayne, A lot of your favorites relegated to just background players in this. Yeah, well what do you think? Well, I gotta tell you I'm on the fence because I agree. I see. I I totally agree with with David Wayne on a lot of our beloved characters just being relegated to like one or two scenes or just background characters. I mean, think about poor Rock and Roll. Has he ever got to speak on any of these mini series. He's barely. He shows up like three times in the Revisionobra, but he's He's just oddly like somewhere right. Yeah. But uh, I think we've got a better, a better mcguffin this time around with the weather Dominator. But I think the mass device may be a little bit better.

19:57 And and again, I've a has been a snake eyed guy. So his whole radioactive take one for the team a subplot was one of my favorite things. I'm here. Yeah. True, Although I think they did have to give as much as I, you know, love Duke and Snake Eyes, they had to take kind of a back seat here so that we could see the introduction and advancement of Flint and the intro of Storm and Freedom as as kind of I guess almost replacements or stand ins for them, so that we wouldn't have to spend episodes of the ongoing series getting their intros. So it kind of gets a lot of that out of the way.

20:38 Yeah, we've got we've we've got some We've got we've got some plan, we got plenty of new characters, and I do want to I want to I want to save that for for a little bit because I do want to talk about some some of these great new characters. But since since you brought Flint up, we're gonna go ahead and let me jump in now with with Flint. I always love Flint the figure, especially he he led a lot of my missions. I was Lady J d J. I'm watching this though, Scott, and I'm for the first time, I'm questioning Flint's leadership capabilities. First off, how motivated are you? Because you know, and I don't want to jump into the convoy just yet, but Duke gets captured. FLINTZ got this very just lasadaisical response. Well, I guess I'm in charge now.

21:26 It's like which he says from the from the cockpit of a flying vehicle. Yes, which I guess he's hovering in while he's watching them slowly drag up snake Eyes and Duke in a giant, sagging net. Where were you, bro, Oh, well you're you're The fight's still going on. Oh ship, they got Duke. He's in a net. Well, I guess I'm in charge. So well, all right, let's let's just regroup. It's they lost and they got their butts kicked by Cobra because their true leader was not there. And that's Hawk. He should have been there. Oh well, he's he's not going to show up for until nineteen eighty seven. Wayne, So just sit sit tight on Hawk. I know you love Hawk, but.

22:12 Gi Joel will return after these messages. Now back to g I Joel. I know, I know there's a lot of scenes we want to talk about, but can we talk real quickly just about this this opening montage. I think this cartoon does one of the greatest things that Saturday Morning cartoons or after school cartoons ever did. It's the opening montage. It shows like the teams in action. Dude, it really get you pumped up for it. Man. Yeah. Yeah, they're so well animated. It's yeah, they're beautiful. It's some of the best animation in the series. It feels like it's on par with the commercial animation, which when I'm looking back at the commercials where absolutely top notch.

23:01 Yeah, absolutely, yeah. I gotta tell you something. Yes, Snake Eyes takes a back seat in this mini series, but I noticed something in the opening montage. I'm pretty sure this is the only time we've ever seen physical contact between Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes. If you've watched I've watched this like a dozen times, so I'm I'm zeroing in on every little minute detail. I don't know if you guys caught this, but we got all this stuff happening right Joe's and Cobra's and dread Knocks are all over the place fighting. It's it's just a battle royale. The first time you see storm Shadow in this opening montage, he's just dishing out throwing stars to anyone in a ten foot radius, and then out of nowhere, Snake Eyes zooms in on a hang glider and kind of sucker punches it. He like he kicks him in the back and then and then you're off to like the next scene.

23:54 And I started thinking about that, and I was like, wait a minute, because I know we've got a we got an awesome showdown between Spirit and Storm Shadows Scott a little too, and I know we'll see them fight again in the In the television series, it was at a great ex Caliber episode where the Joes were in Scotland. Lady the like Storm shows after the ex Caliber sword and he's gotta fight Spirit. Am I the only one? Or was it everyone going, when of the hell are we ever going to see Stormshadows Snake Eyes fight? Ye? Well, I was saying it because I was reading the comics at the time, and that was a big thing at this time, right when this mini series came out, was around the twenties issues, twenties twenty one, when that Silent issue came out. So yeah, I was excited to see this character and it was a big thing in the comics, but it never happened here really much in the cartoon.

24:42 Why did Scott, Why did they deny us for this entire this entire time, the entire run of the cartoon, all these mini series? Why were we denied this This is like in the eighties when you were just wishing for hal Cogan to fight Rick Flair and you knew it could what happened because they're in different different factions. But this is the same cartoon. So why you know, the dream fight, why did why did Ron Freeman? Denius Scott, Well, it's interesting you mentioned that analogy because I was just thinking it feels like the title belt. So maybe they were saying, like, you know, when these two finally face off, because they're both kind of known in similar ways in their individual groups, right, maybe they're kind of building up suspense, like if you see them actually fight each other, it's all downhill from there, versus having them face off against everybody else and making them seem almost unstoppable, Like I don't think there was anybody that fought Storm Storm Shadow to a standstill aside from Spirit.

25:45 Yeah, my theory is that, and Scott, I think you I think you got something there. But to your point, my theory is that they were saving it. They were holding on right for maybe another big mini series or theatrical film. You know, well we got in eighty seven, we got the movie still didn't happen, So I don't know how long they're they're hoping they were gonna tease us, but I mean, come on, ninety eight three to nineteen eighty seven, you can't give it to us. Yeah, well, I. Can guarantee you every kid had that fight. Yeah, yeah, guarantee. Yeah, guys, let's talk about some of these scenes because some of them, we've got some So we've got some introductions of some new characters. Some things are crazy, some things, and I'm gonna I'm gonna I'm gonna pick on Wayne here because I know the last time we had this conversation, he was like, what's great about the original stuff is that was very realistic and waite, I know you're I'm cheating comics. Well it was, but we've got you know, Spirit and Storm Show isn't the only big, big, big showdown we have here. We do have a giant fire breathing Aztec Stone creature finding a mega Godzilla Cobra thing, you know, at something, you know, some point we'll get to.

27:06 But let me clarify. When I said realistic, I I you're gonna be laughing. I meant that that the g I. Joe team and the vehicles and stuff and even Cobra at the time in the like the first three waves of figures were grounded on real life vehicles and people. They look more they look like they could be part of our army, you know, circa nineteen ninety four. But after this year it kind of went more into the sci fi range. But I don't get me started on that whole az tech thing. Well, let's let's let's talk. Let's talk for a minute, Whane. Let's talk about Cobra Commander, because this is his first appearance with the hood, right, this is this is our the debut of the hooded Cobra Commander in the animated form. Meanwhile, though, am I wrong or wasn't he wearing the hood from the beginning in the.

28:03 Marvel comic comic he did? I don't know if it was directly from the beginning. I try to I'm trying to think back. I know he was wearing an issue five, so I don't remember. I'm trying to think of issue one if he had it on there at all. But I know it was back right at the beginning, close to the beginning. Yeah, I pointed out because again you know, as Scott, as Scott said earlier, this is made to sell toys. This, this whole mini series is made to sell toys. The Hooded Cobra Commander wasn't one you could just go buy on the shelves at Johnny's Toy Store or hex end out for it. This was a you know, buy three figures and then your upc and two ninety nine shipping and handling and wait six to eight weeks, which was actually like more like nine months. Yeah, he showed up in a little plastic bag, right.

I think it's I think it's interesting that they would they would choose to debut the Hooded Cobra Commander in this miniseries when we didn't have a figure that was readily available to buy, or or was it Hasbro's Master Planet. Oh you'll get him, but you have to buy three other toys. I don't remember. No either. I wonder if they were, Yeah, I wonder if they're kind of gauging interest right to say, like, can we really calm these kids into buying duplicates of the same character just wearing a different outfit. That's true. My favorite redesign. By the way, I'm probably a loaded that one. But Snake Eyes and Timber lasting.

29:35 No, I'm with Scott with that. I'll i'll yo Joe you on that one. Yeah, I know Wayne loves the original figure for Snake Eyes. I'm with you. I like the reissue with Timber. Dave. What side of this uh Snake Eyes debater you on? Oh? No, I'm with Snake Eyes and Timber. Oh absolutely all right, Wayne stands alone with the radioactive glow. Yep, I get I guess wrong. Mini series. So this one opens up with a huge battle right off the bat, Yojoe convoy. Go. We are making quite a big deal about shipping this laser Corps, right, I mean there's an armada. Yeah.

30:19 Well, I mean it was nice to see that Optimus Prime and Stunt Doubles have summer work. Well, Scott, if you're going to ship a highly classified, dangerous object like the Laser Core, clearly you're just gonna bungee cord strap it to like the top of a you know, a box truck. Yeah. Well, I think if I think, if I have the manufacturing to be able to build this big range of weapons and vehicles and whatever, I'm probably going to try to build things like a giant laser can on site instead of outsourcing it to someplace in the middle of Arizona and then having to ship this giant convoy. Like, come on, you're setting yourself up.

31:02 Yeah, it's easy. I know, I know, Wayne said it. You know, we got a lot of vehicles, We got a lot of new new faces here. I was always a fan of the Skyhawk. Oh, yes, love the sky Hawk. Dave, is this It's not a helicopter. It's not. It's kind of like an amalgam, right it is. And I think that the engines like would go down so it would like lift up into the eric like a helicopter. Yeah, I have like the Harrier effect. Yeah, yeah, Dave, do we need I get that we want to cover all all sides of this core, but but do we need to fly twenty feet apart and check in? No? No, I don't think he's like, hey, hey, Flint.

31:45 He he literally looks out the canopy of his Skyhawk. You can see Flint smiling at him. This is like a top gun moment, you know, where we're close enough to give the finger and he's like, hey, Flint, how's the look on your side? Well? Here here twenty feet away. It's exactly as you describe it back to you, Duke. What what I want to know is how long with Firefly waiting in that tree? Oh gosh, yeah he is. Yeah, when's my moment? I want to be in the strategy session at Cobra at the Cobra temple where he's like, look, we're pretty sure they're going to take this route on this day. Firefly, can you show up like the night before and hide and I'll just I'll just I'll cue you when I need you at the exact moment. It's funny as kids, you don't think about the logistics.

32:43 No of these battles. You're just it's it's eye candy, right, You're just you're just so excited to see it. But Dave, you're absolutely right some of the stuff that is happening in this battle.
