You know we had fun talking about a Night's Tale. Yes, that was a good episode. That that was a lot of fun. Yes, yeah, Amber, I I'm not ready to watch horror films yet, but you and Brad have kind of horror films. Well, it is always a good time to watch horror films.

I'm talking about our limited series, A script by you joined Brad to discuss a script by Jordan Peel for his movie get Out, and that was it was a tree. I thank you. I'm glad glad that you were you were the one because I know you're a big fan of that movie. Yes, I love Jordan Peel and love that film in particular, So it was it was. A good time. You and Brad should do more. You should, you should be There should be a couple more Brad Amber episodes. I think I thought the chemistry was really good. 3:26 I'm happy to say, I don't know how happy I am to talk about him today, but there's very there's very little available about Reynolds, and we covered most of it when we did his background on the first Kevin Reynolds episode. Back, I want to say, back in season two, when Brad and I discussed his nineteen eighty eight film The Beast, which was actually a listener recommended that, like that was we were like, I wonder what we're gonna do, and one of our listeners, one of you guys out there, said hey, I would love to hear about this Kevin Reynolds movie called The Beast, and I was like, Kevin, it's Robinhood, Prince of Thieves. I've never heard the Beast. Beast is an amazing movie, really good Jason Patrick, I definitely would recommend it, but you know, go back check that episode out. Anyways, I'll give you these three facts.

4:17 Kevin Reynolds a Texas lawyer turned screenwriter. His big break came when he wrote the script for my all time favorite war film, talking about nineteen eighty four's Red Dawn. And I'm watching Tristan and as Old and there is a scene that is very reminiscent of Red Dawn. And we'll touch on that here in a minute, But moving on his twenty sixteen film Risen. Did either of you see that one? I don't think so. No, No, Amber shaking her head. It was originally titled The Resurrection of Jesus Christ and was intended to be the unofficial sequel to the Passion of the Christ. Which is interesting because right now, the official sequel to that movie is currently underway with director Mel Gibson, and it's titled The Resurrection of the Christ and it is scheduled for release on Good Friday, March twenty sixth, twenty twenty seven.

5:25 So I don't know if we want to if you want to watch Risen before you get to the official sequel, But. I mean to be honest, after this, I am never watching Kevin Smithy. She stepped out because he's done some good stuff though. No, he's done two movies that Kevin Costner took over, and those are two movies I will watch. But the rest I'm like, no, I would. I would implore you to watch The Beast. It is such a good now And what do you mean. No, I don't know Kevin Coser takeover and direct it. Kevin Costner has nothing to do with it, and I'm out, Okay, well you know what? You know what? Amber, That's a nice segue to a third fact that I have. Kevin Reynolds.

6:18 His birthday is one day before Kevin Costner's. And I mentioned it because Amber mentions it. Because these two were longtime collaborators and friends, having worked together on Fandango, Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves, Dances with Wolves, and The Hatfields and The McCoy's which he was nominated for. I want to say an Emmy. They did have a falling out during production of water World. Imagine that Reynolds. Reynolds left the production over creative differences. And interesting quote from Kevin Reynolds when you ask him about working with Kevin Costner. He is quoted as saying, Kevin Costner should only act in movies he directs. That way he can work with his favorite actor and director.

7:10 That's the quote I had pulled just in case. Throw in some shade at Kevin cost Okay, look I gotta, I gotta. I mean, I'm sorry. Kevin Costner saved hiss ass. So I say, Amber, we have Listen, we have Kevin Costner because of Kevin Reynolds. You have to remember, it was Kevin Reynolds student film UH in school called Proof That It that it goes on to become the movie Fandango, which Spinberg, you know, UH produces, and there was in a then unknown Kevin Costner, and that's where these guys you know, initially started their their work together. So they did, by the way, Amber, I don't know if they're I don't know how friendly they are now, but they did reconnect, uh, just a little while ago, they did this really nice Robin Hood Prince of Thieves blu Ray, like a four K restiration they did. They did an audio commentary for it, though, so they were able to get them together to do the audio commentary for that. So you know, you know, I haven't heard I haven't heard it, and now I've got to hear it because like, you know, like are they you know, are there bar passive?

Are they frenemies as a talk or is it one of those or maybe it's one of those those audio commentaries where it's like and now Kevin Costner, where they didn't get you can tell. Yeah, I can't stand those types of audio commentaries when it's like audio commentary by these three people and it's like they're all three like in different places. Just you know what, give me three separate audio commentaries if you're gonna do that. Yeah, Like, don't don't pretend that they're all together. Pretend and don't don't create a conversation. Just just yeah, the five word synopsis. All season long, we've been covering blockbusters.

9:02 We've been celebrating the anniversaries, the the twentieth and twenty fifth anniversaries of movies from two thousand and one to two thousand and six. So we're not doing these these deep dive descriptions. Angela, tell me what Tristan and is Old is all about? Using exactly five words with. This one, Young Love doomed by treason. That works, That absolutely works. Amber. Uh, do you want you want to go? You want to give you one? Give you mine? I mean, I just threw this together because I'm in such denial over the five word synopsis that I didn't do one for this one. She hates the second, but I did it.

I mean, you just shot from the hit with that that I could hear that description. I could, I could wonder if that's Romeo and Juliet, you know, shout out to shout out to Amber Lewis, who who did our Romeo and Juliet episode for our nineteen ninety six series what still our most downloaded episode of all time. That it's amazing. Yeah, it's amazing. It was fun to do though. So yeah. I so we've got we've got doomed you know, doomed lovers, and Angela you had what what? What was your description of other lovers?

10:31 It was young love, dune by Young Love. Okay, young love, doomed Glovers. I think we're all on the same page here. My five words synopsis if anyone asked me about this movie, Dishonest Lovers Destroy Fledgling Kingdom. See, I kind of thought about that, but like the story is too lame, so I didn't feel like I could have such a like fiery, impassioned synopsis. Firing and the voice of reasons. I've got the voice. I've got a typical angela. Your synopsis makes people think like it's going. To be exciting, and they would be so disappointed.

11:14 And they and to be fair, I mean, they didn't know. So they may think that it's exciting and great, but I think over the next no, they don't. All you have to do is watch their love scene. They well, yeah, I'm just I'm just I'm just saying people that think we're gonna we're about to write a love letter to Kevin Reynolds, there for a surprise, because I don't know how much we're gonna enjoy this one. But let's just let's just let's just be honest. Let's just let's just put it out there. I mean, it's just, yeah, I think that Amish community has had hotter triists than this.

11:57 All right, Well, here's the thing. This movie has amazing cinematography, a wonderful score from hold On, let me let me talk Amber, just let me let me do a thing. It has. It has amazing cinematography. You can just get rid of the adjectives. Has a score Amber, just just before I m I'm gonna, I'm gonna mute her mic. This movie has amazing cinematography, a wonderful score from composer Anne Dudley, who gives a very dark and somber Celtic inspired score. It's got some talented actors, and yet it absolutely does not work. We need to discuss why we're gonna do that right after this break, and we might even talk about Angela's trists and an Amish country when we get When we get back, welcome back, we are talking about Kevin Reynolds two thousand and six medieval romantic drama that just doesn't work. Tristan and is Old. Here's my thought. Okay, the film doesn't work because we have no one to follow. Your two main characters are scheming adulterers who willfully betray the trust of a good man who loves and respects them. Amber,

13:33 Am I right? Or is there more to it? Well? I think there's a little more to it because this is basically the King Arthur story. And if you watch like ex Caliber, which is awesome, that movie's awesome, and the romance is intense, and they're doing all the wrong things, but you're engaged, like you're involved in this, you know, and with this, like I mean, nobody cares, Like it just doesn't even matter. Nobody cares. And they don't even make, you know, rufus Sewell into like a really good king because they had he threw in like all these scenes of non conceptual sex between him and his soul.

14:20 So that's just disgusting. So you don't even get to like the king because like that's gross, Like I need. To see that. Okay, So rufus Seule, like, I mean. I feel like he and Thomas Brady Sanger are the only ones that like showed up to like work in this movie. Like everybody else it was. Wait, what about what about Henry Cavill. Oh please, I mean he's cute and all, but he was just a little side piece like that. He's actually chewing gum in one scene, so there's that. Sure, I didn't, I swear. To god watch it again. His opening scene, he is chomping on a big old piece of gum. But not only everybody in this movie.

15:01 It's like resemble as much as you can. A block of wood was like their only direction. Well, like I said, some really talented actors, but they just they're they're not here on set, Angela, Angela, Why doesn't this film work well? For several reasons, But like you said, you have you have decent enough I think little pieces, but they're just the chemistry, well, the chemistry that was meant to be there between the two leads is just it's just seemed very forced, not really lack of it.

15:42 Well, yes, yes, lack of it. I mean for in the script. So apparently really Scott had been working on an adaptation of this since like the mid seventies. He said it, I wish I didn't know that, because how much better would that movie have been. Well, we'll get to that. We'll get to that. He put it aside to do Aliens nineteen seventy nine. This movie comes out in two thousand and six. I'm like, in the twenty seven plus. Years, this is like, this is the bet for example, just to the pure example as to how much lacking of chemistry between the two in the middle of one of their almish like trists, Tristan is, how do you feel?

16:28 And she says, I don't know. I mean, I'm like, good lord. I mean, first of all, every woman knows. Second, I mean, it's just just this, oh my, this bumbling of a guy pops in on her shore. And I mean, and I feel for as old mare, just because you know, a woman of that time, in any time where basically she's going to be, you know, chattled off to that big brute of her dad, the king. Oh my god, I. Was just well, yeah, she's promised to. Oh it was so gross and in him just his creepy little coumon thing.

17:10 But but yes, a severe lack of chemistry between the two quote unquote lovers. And then yes, I mean, while you do have the. Woman's place of that time and what was to be expected them, and that it was still just really gross. You've seen a lot of other like period movies, and you just they do you know, do it a little bit more I don't know, delicately or not, as I don't know message. So it's so it's the lack of chemistry, a. Severe lack of chemistry, chemistry, no chemistry, and like. Em versus like there's all these characters and you're like, I don't really care about any of them, like Jay, like Tristan should have just died as old, maybe should have just married the brute and maybe poisoned him. I mean, she had access to all sorts of stuff. Yeah, you know, so, I mean you see this, you know this, this woman seems, you know, very intelligent, she seems to you know, her mind, but she's just still so quiet and so reserved. And then you know, this guy shows up and they barely can you know, mutter out a sentence. I mean, apparently she can read. I don't know if he can because she was always on with the book.

18:18 And then, like I said, then their their trysts are more chase than the you know, no offense to the Amish community and you know. Hey, I don't think they're listening. Yeah I know, but you know, if you have you know, horder experiences, more power to you. But yeah, it was just like uh like just a desert just ugh, like there was just nothing, like nothing, just boredom. Well and even with the war aspect of it, like there weren't really any stakes involved because you don't know who you're fo you don't know who you're against. They're vaguely racist against the Irish, but we don't know why, right. Well, okay, so and it's a little it's a little confusing because how many movies have we seen where like these these like medieval movies where like Britain like they're always the bad guys. They're always the ones trying to move in on.

19:13 Or stopped invading us for like five freaking minutes like this taken over the world. But yeah, but this is yeah, so this movie. Definitely not the oppressors. Yeah, so like this begins like it's the fall of the Roman Empire. All these tribes are warring with each other, and and Ireland's like kind of like the the heavy they're the ones that. Are like, you don't know why, you don't know why, Yeah, you know, it's just. It's just it's weird to see that Britain's trying to come together, like they're trying to put Britain together. Like like Rufus Sule isn't really trying to unite, like he doesn't seem to be working that hard at it. So while Arthur, who was trying to unite all these factions and.

19:57 You know, angela story. Jel will remind you that Rufus still he couldn't try because he was too busy as the Black Prince and in the Night's Tale. His evil twin brother. Yeah, yeah, that's why. But also he you know, he was kind of put in that position by default a little bit. Because of the we see you know, in the beginning. But like all, they treat us like idiots. I hate movies that, Like they show you a map and then they put words on the screen to tell you what you just saw on the map. The way this movie treats us like we're morons just gets on my nerves.

20:39 Yeah, so here and there. Yeah, well, if you're. Gonna spoon feed, then spoon feed me some story that tells me who these people are. And why do I even care? Yeah, I'm gonna I know we're doing I know we're talking about the cast, but I just want to jump in so that we're not I don't want this to be like the Drago Apollo Creed fight where we're just destroying it. I'm Pepper. I'm gonna Pepper and a good thing here and there. I mentioned Red Down before the break. How how Kevin Reynolds wrote the screenplay for that Don, which is okay, so get it. There is a scene it is pulled directly from Red Don. I'm talking about the ambush, which is which is absolutely awesome in this movie.

21:23 Uh yeah, you know the we have the thundering drums. It's the one where where Tristan like kind of leads a little bit of a counter attack and as they're running passed. I just I mean, our two fastest. I just watched Robinhood Prince of Thieves, and they do that exact same scene. Kevin Kevin Reynolds. But but that's what I was watching. Think. Yeah, but when you see Jennifer Gray in nineteen eighty four running from the Russians across that field and they're bearing down on it and then they pop up out of the ground and just mow them down, I mean, eight year old Jeff lost his mind, and you know, you know, adult Jeff is like, oh, we got a Red Dawn moment.

22:07 So you know, I just went with Robin Hood. But I give it. I'm thinking it. Yeah, And you know Viking Funerals, you know that's listen. If something happens to me next week or next month, I'm on, I'm on record right now, make sure it's a Viking funeral for me. Put me on the boat, and then have the archers you know, do it right, That's what I'm saying, and burn it down like you know, like he's did they were they not checking his pulse? Oh, they didn't know about things like that. But yeah, he managed to survive crossing the. He makes it all the way to Ireland. And I just kept thinking of Game of Thrones when they tried to set that one guy's boat on fire and then the guy kept missing, like grabs the boat, just does it and walks away like it.

Yeah, so one more well, you know, one more thing about rufus Sewell, because this whole movie is just this guy getting cocked and shipped on by these two lying schemers. You guys, you know you're promised to the soon to be King Mark looking like rufus Stewle. You know, is you know, from the female perspective, is this is it that bad of a deal? Right? I'm not mad about it. That's why I like the King Arthur story better because King Arthur and Guenevere are married and it's a marriage of convenience. It's a marriage of you know, uniting groups.

23:40 And they work at it, they really try, and then she meets someone else that falls in love, but to have it be this weird like they were already in love and they decided that they weren't going to, you know, cheat, and then she's the one that is. I just I feel like, well that gets him to cheat. And you know, I just feel like, you know, like Angela pointed out, like the the burly pig of a guy that she was promised was gross, let's talk about let's talk about how Mark's treating her. You know, he's got he's got that line. That's why I hate those love scenes because he's so respectful.

Well, also like just a way think, yes he's this nice, just oh, you know, is there anything.

I mean, you might as well kiss a corpse, like buddy, take a hint, like just.

Now, Franco also he has some things to say and I want to talk about it. He's on record as saying that this is his most regrettable role. He has also stated he didn't think Henry Cavill liked working with him, and I think at some point you have to wonder, is James Franco's problem actually just James Franco because when we think about the state of things today, Yeah, okay, you know, I don't want to get too far into this, but let's you know, people are like James Franco. When's the last time I saw him in anything? Well it's been a while, okay, So and here's here's the deal.

27:57 So twenty eighteen, there are alligatations of sexual misconduct and inappropriate behavior with multiple women who just happened to have attended his class, his acting class, his acting in school. So I got sentence, I got I got a couple of well okay, well okay, so I will say this too, and I want to be fair here. Outside of his performance in one hundred and twenty seven Hours, which he was nominated for, I just can't think of a good James Franco performance. Like some weird like a James Dean type thing. There was.

So these five women, they accused him of abusing his power to create an environment of sexual harassment. Apparently the class there was like how to have how to do sex here. You're gonna like this because of you know, obviously it bears on Tristan is Old. It was during classes about how to perform sexually, how to how to do sex scenes basically is where they felt he was taking advantage and doing some stuff you should have done, which you gotta wonder what those those classes were like, because like we sell how he's doing it here with Tristan and is Old not not so good, not.

But anyways, there was a lawsuit, uh, you know, fraud, sexual harassment settled for two point two million dollars into the twenty one he loses everything. Uh, he loses He's a gut. He's like he's pulled off the cover of Vanity Fair. Right when this happens, Uh, everyone walks away from, including his long time close friend and collaborator Seth Rogan. Rogan says, I'll never work with Franco again, So you know, good, good on you, Seth Rogan HM. And you know, Franco since then, he has because he has to I think he has to say this, but he has used his time away for recovery, addressing personal issues and working and on independent films. And he admitted that he was a little crazy for a while not too long ago. He was.

30:41 He did he did a show. They had to bring it up, and Franco's quote is, I mean, it is what it is. I've honestly moved past it. It was dealt with and I got the change, so that's it. It's over. I mean, I've worked in the US too, so I'm just trying to move on. Because like most creeps that you know, get in trouble, this kind of trouble, they they'll go to Europe and do movies because you know, that's that's what you do. But I just Franco. He has the look, he had the look for this role, but he is just doing a terrible job in it. And that's We'll move on from James Franco. I think we've said all we need to say.

31:24 But well, except also to he didn't really have it, like he didn't try, like you can just even tell like he didn't even care, like. Like we didn't really care about qualities. So why not? This was Henry Cavill's like second movie, So why not just put him in the. Lead, Like, yeah, you know what Henry call was? Yeah? Are you? Are you? Ember? Are you? Like quietly not a fan of Henry Cavill. Oh. I love Henry Cavill. Okay, the greatest actor ever. Like he can good. Work and then he can also do really CRIMEI works. So I think it depends on who's in control of what project's doing. All right, Well someone we we. But I'll look at him all day.

32:06 It's my mom's favorite. It cracks me up. Yeah, she loves her some Henry Cavill. Well, I tell you, I would have. I would have loved me some Sophia Miles. But outside of this movie and the Underworld movies, you know, because she's she's pretty easy on the eyes. I don't know whatever happened to her. She's only been like a couple of small things she did in the Discovery of Witches, which is based off of a book series, and actually then adaptation is really good. I really enjoyed it. She plays a smaller role. She she plays the mother of the lead uh Diane, the witch that she pops up more or less. I can flashbacks and stuff, so she was in that a little bit. Yeah.

32:50 Other than that, I haven't seen her in any shoes. We haven't. She's offered the role of years Old. She's excited because she thinks it's gonna be an adaptation of the popular Richard Wagner opera and it is definitely not that. Which I would have checked that out. I would have gone the Wagner. Away all day long at Amber as the team's resident expert on opera. Have you have you seen? Have you seen the the the opera of Tristan? I've seen, like, okay.

33:32 But I haven't watched the whole Okay, I just it would have been interesting. At least it would have been something different at least. All right, well, you know, talking opera, talking talking about you know, the background. They wrote the script in a night. If that so Angela Earlier, Angela had mentioned that Ridley Scott in the nineteen seventies was originally uh, intending to do the film adaptation of Tristan Is. Ultimately he's only going to produce it. I'm sure he probably regrets that as well, but uh again, Angela says it's it's supposed to be his second film after The Duellists. He ends up focusing on his pitch for Legend, which was this show's very first episode way back in twenty twenty. We were we were so young then. The equipment wasn't good, the we just we don't we didn't know what we're doing yet.

34:26 But it's a I love that movie. It's fun until like it's like it was like an hour and a half, Like the raw cut of that was like two and a half hours. It like we send it out, people are like that. People were like, you know, you should probably have like a half hour to an hour episode, not an epic mini series. So it's not we we mind. Yeah, well really Scott, though, he he doesn't do this because he decides to do a little space broh of his own. Nineteen seventy nine is Alien. I want to live my favorite movie ever in.

I don't for one second think that a Ridley Scott directed version of this movie would have been amaz wouldn't have been amazing, but I would not sacrifice alien to see it. So right, No, now, you guys already alluded to this. Uh so Mark, Tristan and is Old and the characters of Arthur, Guinevere and Lancelot, it's pretty much a believe that they all originated from the same source material. Amber, you're again ex caliber, which is awesome? Did it that? Did it the right way? There?

Well, they kind of like both stories exist in the same like universe if you want to use like MCU kind of okay, So there's a version of the story where like this was in the Kingdom next door to Camelot and then like Tristan and Lancelot like met up and we're bros. Like hey, do you ever do you ever over your best friend and you know, sleep with people? Yeah? Bes friends? Well, I mean, you know, sleeping with the Queen's got to be a very niche. Not a lot of people like.

I would probably put this more underneath like the cinematography, okay, but also kind of I wouldn't say necessarily like a strong respond performance, but more of a like. Amatography response, okay, along with it. So I like the pre wedding scene where the bride is being prepared to marry the king and knowing, you know, that Tristan.

38:01 Is his right hand man and that's you know, is not going to be with him. But I like the. Costumes, which I did read that apparently the dress she wore was from Arabian Nights from two thousand. I didn't watch that movie. But if you have, there's a cute little piece of trivia for you. But I just liked the just the whole four boarding and just everything that you can see on her face, you know, Sophia Miles miles face of the dread that she's marrying someone else. She's doing this, you know because of you know, her father and the land and all this other stuff, because that's her place, you know, as a woman. But also it was just very pretty of her being, you know, floated down on these like wooden rafts with all these lanterns and and things like that, bringing her to the pier where the wedding party and her you know, betrothed versus her love.

For the cinematography, I had to choose this old's wedding night boat entrance, which I just thought looked beautiful, you know, everything like you said, everything's torchlit, the lights reflecting off that dark water. She looks absolutely enchanting. And what I really have, what really made me happy. There's no dialogue, It's just Anne Dudley's haunting score. It's it's the beautiful scene to watch. I would say that cause you know, like the music isn't like all up like you know, hopeful and wedding like it's your it's it's your happiest day.

But in this movie, like most of the film, But I love Thomas Bradie Sanger. He is just awesome. He played Samuel in Love. Actually he's the voice of Erb. I'm Phineas and Ferb and I just adore him. And he plays little baby Tristan at the beginning of the movie, and I love the scene when he is brought to Cornwall and he's sort of learning to fight with all these other little guys and they're picking on him and then he finally just goes beastmode on him and kicks all their butts. It's ridiculous because like, okay, you're, you know, this amazing fighter and you're, you know, eight but a.

This movie lost all the money. Rotten Tomatoes thirty one percent, and I got to call this out a surprisingly high number for I am IMDb six point eight out of ten, which I thought that's cued was surprising real.

They say, Hey, Kevin Reynolds, what else like, written by, directed, by, maybe starring? What underrated project have I not seen yet? What do I got to go looking for Angela? What movie? What project? What Kevin Reynolds project? Would you recommend them?
